and right there is the problem...if people allow the government to step in and say you can smoke anywhere then whats to stop them from saying you can't drive vehicles or you can't eat hamburgers.....its a slippery slope. People have choices and we can make those decisions ourselves...we don't need papa bear stepping in every time we need to use our brains.

The only thing the government should be doing is providing people with the material to educate themselves about smoking and second hand smoking. If the government truly wanted people to quit smoking then they would offer free services to help people quit.

The government has no interest in people quiting but they want to make the whiners happy by banning people from smoking everywhere. The reason smokers are not up in arms about all this is because they already know...deep down...they shouldn't smoke.

People do have choice. I choose not to breath in second hand smoke. Thats why there are rules about buildings and job trucks so i dont have to worry about breathing in all that shit... This is just an extension of the rule.

and a smoker has a right to smoke....so if someone is smoking outside...stay away from them. I can understand them banning smoking in places of business...as you don't have a choice in going to work or not. You do have a choice if you want to sit on a park bench beside a smoker or walk within 10 feet of a smoker.

You are right. laws like this can spin out to anything. Thats the point he is trying to make. Take your mentality and apply to just about anything for similar results.

not just laws like this but everything. If this is not right then what makes the us constitution right and what makes killing people wrong and what makes... So what makes anything right or wrong?

people throw their tim horton cups on the ground too...whats your point? There is already a fine for littering....have that law enforced if you are concerned about cigarette butts on the ground. If you are concerned about the two seconds it takes you to get past the smoker while entering a building then hold your breath or ask them nicely if they mind not smoking infront of the door.

Once a friend of mine was smoking in an underground garage. Some guy drives up to him, opens the window and asks him to stop smoking. He says "are you some sort of security or a cop?" He says "No i just dont like breathing your smoke." He says "tell you what, you stop emitting your carcinogenic car fumes and forcing me to breathe them in here, and ill put out my smoke"

LOL classic....

same with the guy smoking out of a McDs where a fat lady comes out and says to him, "you are killing yourself" and the man looks at her and starts to laugh and says, "I wonder who is going to die first."

ROFLMAO, I've pulled that one myself, not that I smoke cigarettes, mind you.

I understand the theory behind this rule, and support the end-goal. That is, protecting kids from second hand smoke that they don't really have a choice in breathing or not.

But please. When do the rules stop? They can't be enforced anyway. Cops will often turn the other way when people are smoking POT right in front of them, why the hell does anyone think they'll step up and fine someone for smoking cigarettes?

Even if this bi-law is passed, it'll be so far down the priority list for police that it will still effectively be legal to smoke near parks and playgrounds. Have you driven by a cop while talking on your cellphone recently? I have, a few times, even had an OPP car following me for 5 minutes while I was on the phone with my friend, they just don't care.

There are so many other, more important, problems that the police should be focusing on that I wonder why city hall would want to create even more work for the already understaffed police force. Drug dealing, shootings, muggings, etc. etc. What's the point of creating a law that can't be enforced?

absolutely... i demand that no vehicle operate within a 10 km radius of a playground or park

I don't support this at all.

I fully support the ban in workplaces, indoors period, public places of business (bars, clubs, etc)...but the outdoors is the outdoors.

You're grossly overestimating the dangers of second hand smoke in the 5 seconds you're walking up to the doorway. It's a silly thing to be even concerned about - the air you're breathing outside that door has many, many more pollutants in it, but you don't hold your breath outside, do you?

There are a lot of things out there that will kill you. Some a lot faster than others. The odds of dying from "second hand smoke inhaled while walking through the entrance of a building" are pretty slim. Especially compared to all the other things. I'd worry more about those.

Posted by love_child on Jan-10-2009 22:38:

The real threat to health is coming from industrial polluntants and the excessive use of the automobile. Where are the restrictions on their use? This is idiotic at best and facist at worst.

Yes but the places that need the population reduced, ie. China and India, do not have any bans in place...

As a non-smoker and a person who hates second hand smoke I say bring it on
