I find it ironic that you'd use that as an example here because starcraft is far deeper and more complex than chess.

Your comparing an actual strategy game played by mankind throughout centuries to a fucking computer game?

Yes.

Do you have any point to make other than that chess is older?

no, that would be everyone that still plays SC

Oh zing, you got me there.

Come to think of it, the titles I'm most looking forward to this year are;

-a remake of a game from the late 80s
-two remakes of games from the late 90s
-a re-release of a game originally released in 1999

Wow, the expansion to a game came out the same year as the game itself? Fuck, Starcraft really was huge. (and still is, don't get me wrong)

Posted by Cpt.Cocaine on Jan-17-2009 15:26:

Yeah, but keep in mind expansions don't work the same for every kind of game. RTS games in particular have to go through a lot of balancing before they get shipped, so their alpha/beta phases are usually longer than most, which gives content devellopers and artists a head start because they have very little work to do during beta. Then the expansion usually goes through less testing than the original version. A lot of the new stuff that came with brood war was actually finished before starcraft came out.

So, Blizzard basically saw this as an opportunity to make more money...?

Not to make that sound like a bad thing; game developers are in this business for the money, plain and simple.

Of course. The desert tileset in BW was in the original SC beta. The valkyrie was in the original, and it had booster jets and an air-to-ground splash attack. The beta deemed a bunch of this stuff unbalanced or unfinished, so they figured; let's just keep working on it and then release it later on as an expansion set. Funny thing is; this is exactly what they did just now with the whole "3 parts" deal, except back then no one was complaining and BW was almost universally well received.

I wouldn't be surprised if they end up taking a handful of units out of the current build and saving them for expansions. Stuff like the thor, marauder, or units they previousely cut earlier in the devellopment process that might get revamped like the terran predator or the reaver. It's win-win really. Blizzard makes a shitton more money, and we get a more polished product.

Posted by CONNERMAN2000 on Jan-19-2009 17:22:

Well, nobody can really bitch about it then. Although we may have to spend more money, we get a better product, and its usually the better products that are worth the money.
