It has been around my neighborhood for a few years now. Back when house music was big the dj's would throw a trance song in once in a while and the crowd would go nuts. This was back in 96. Couldn't put my finger on what it was up until about 97. Then it started for me. Instead of house music(which is ok) I started what we all know as a "TranceMission" which is still running strong today.

Smoking ..umm..something

my senior year in high school which was 99/00...i was living in japan for 10th and 11th grade and there really was no trance scene there..i lived on a marine base near Hiroshima..i used to go to all the japanese bars and clubs but they never played trance...i was a total enigma junkie in middle school though and i like prodigy a lot when they came out...they dont count as "trance" but they are definately a genre of electronica i think...

as for which DJ/set/songs got me into the real deal...i'd have to go with songs like "Brainchild" and Viagra "Secrets" both of those songs were on a David Padilla cd called "In the Mix" i bought it my senior year...also Sasha GU013 got me hooked and just going clubbing in ft.lauderdale my senior year practically every weekend introduced me to a lot of great breaks and hard trance...i was instantly addicted

Hmm I don't know exactlly when I started listening to trance. I grew up listening to 80's stuff like Depeche Mode, U2, Tears For Fears, New Order, etc. I also liked alot of the underground industrial stuff that was being turned out. Stuff that used alot of synths and the like. I didn't like anything too hardcore or full of rage though. In the early 90's I liked some of the alternative rock that was all the shit back then. Nirvana, Alive n Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. I think the first recollection of getting into trance was being introduced to Orbital in the early 90's. Belfast got me started. Then tracks like Lush 3-1/3-2 and Halcyon really got me intruiged. Oh also I was really diggin Enigma too. So between Enigma and Orbital I was finding a sound I loved. I think trance was the natural direction to go. Mid to late 90's saw me listening to DJ's like BT, Sasha, and Oakenfold. By then I was hooked. I wanted anything and everything trance. When programs like Napster and Audio Galaxy started popping up I was in heaven. I was finding music that I would have never heard had it not been for these progs. Now that Napster and AG are dead I am wondering where I will turn to continue to get my trance fix. Yes I am well established enough now to know who turns out good stuff and who doesn't but I fear I may not find new and exciting stuff that comes out. I can count on Sasha, PVD, Tiesto, Solar Stone, BT, Way Out West, etc. but I dont want to miss out on newcomers to the scene. Oh well. I'm sure something will pop up. Until then I will just have to be extra careful of the stuff I buy and won't be taking any chances either. I'll stick to what/who I know. I don't need to be buying anything that reminds me of ATB.

*TA forever*

Party Hat

i started listening to robert miles and sven vaeth since 1997, but i got helplessly addicted to trance in 2000, when pvd released "tell me why (the riddle)". i know it is not exactly very trance, but it was the stepping stone for me, i tried out other tracks of the same genre (thx to napster), and then i got addicted to people such as ferry corsten and above & beyond

Posted by C-naptik on Jun-19-2002 13:56:

I started listening to some kinds of electonic music in '90/91 when i was 9/10 years old
Mostly eurodance shit till 94, then some techno/trance tracks in 94 but I really went into trance music in '95. (mostly Psy-trance, but also trance tracks like Jam & Spoon, Love Stimulation etc...)
Was a lot into techno and hardcore as well back then

Bought my first mixer in '96, and turntables in '99

i've loved electronic music for a long time, but i just got into trance about 5 days ago so i still have tons to learn about this massive genre. my first song was System F - Exhale.

Posted by noonboy on Jun-19-2002 17:27:

i first started to listen to dj tiesto's "live at innercity" from 1999. that cd was the thing that made me like trance. well, after a while i didn't find any more good trance in a long time, but then...when i was at a party i heard someone playing something like trance nation 3, then i REALLY started to like trance, though now i hate that compilation. now the internet suddently internet became 10 times as useful as if i didn't like trance

one day i was downloading "johan gielen - velvet moods". then randomly, i just dropped by the id tag, and it said: www.tranceaddict.com! and when THIS site was showing up...BOOM!my ADDICTION REALLY STARTED! it was about last summr or something.

sorry you must be tired of reading , but i just had to tell the whole story!

2002: A Trance Odessey

1998: found a remix of PvD's "For An Angel" on traxinspace.com (a then mod music site). first encounter with Trance.
(my response: that's nice.)

2000 spring: heard transa's remix of BT's "Mercury & Solace". first encounter with professionally-produced Trance.
(my response: *gasp* ........... FAAAAAAKKKING BRILL!!!!!! OH MY GOODNESS. i'm devoted to trance forever. forever... forever... forever... forever... *fades out*)

2000 spring: went out and buy all BT albums, and PvD's "Out There And Back" album.
2000 july: saw john '00' fleming's "For Your Ears Only" and "Slinky: Factor 3" in Sam the Record Man. bought Slinky instead of J00F -- BIG mistake. turned out that Factor 3 was nowhere as great as "For Your Ears Only", and was a non-factor.

2000 sept: made my first "favourite trance" CD. no beatmatching or mixing involved, absolutely laughable in my standard today.

2001 feb: PvD spun at the guvernment. that was the first DJ set i saw.

(my response: AWESOME EXPERIENCE. *repeats for 200 times*)

2001 oct: PvD's "The Politics of Dancing" got me fully addicted into Trance again. been leeching trance from AG ever since.

2002 feb: prepared for my first proper mix compilation. songs were selected, cover was made. everything was ready except i don't have a pair of decks, had to mix with Traktor, on ONE soundcard.

2002 june: shifted a tad bit to breakbeat trance. thinking to buy SL-1200, still preparing for my first proper mix compilation.........

(my response: will it ever come out???)

In 83 ... I was 5 years :-) No, in fact I grew with house/club/techno/trance songs, I cant remember me my first contact with trance 'cause I was too little.

I've a lot souvenirs also:

New order - Blue monday
Liaisons dangereuses - Los ninos del parque
Amnesia - Ibiza
Lil Louis - French kiss
Human ressource - Dominator
DHS - House of god

and all new beat songs!!!

I know that wasn't "strict" trance but that was my first electronic songs.

Robert Miles

It all Started With Robert Miles - Children
Probably because of him im'e a Tranceaddict Today!!!

Posted by sPiGo on Jun-19-2002 22:08:

Ive enjoyed listening to electronic music since i can remember(mid 80s)kraftwerk,snap,prodigy,orbital,chemical brothers etc.
But trance as it is today is for me DJ Tisto - Magik1 CD(1998).

Posted by [mart] on Jun-19-2002 23:01:

It all started for me, perhaps unfortunately, with Fragma - Toca Me (just to clarify, that's the one without the vocals ). Heard it played on Radio 1's Dance Anthems a couple of times and for some weird reason it provoked me to buy a CD out at the time called 'Trance Mix '99'.

Thankfully this CD happened to contain many a top track; Veracocha - Carte Blanche, Binary Finary - 1999 (Gouryella Remix), Lange - I Believe, Blank & Jones - Cream, Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel...I was hooked

BTW this is my first post on the TA forums, and I hope I haven't broken anything due to my incompetence.

uhh, i remembered when i first starting to like trance music
when i listened to.. DJ Jean - The Launch
and DJ Jean - Megaman Techno Remix
and then I started to download most of his garbage
and as i continued to listen to trance, i then started to get into
the REAL shit..

I heard "Never Gonna Come Back Down" by BT on the radio. I could'nt believe how awesome this song was (it's still one of my favorites today!!! ) That was about 2 years ago and I had just gotten Napster. That lead me to d/ling GODSPEED, another all time favorite, my first trance song. And that lead to Flaming June, Dreaming, and Namistai which lead to PvD and that lead to Oakenfold and the cycle just kept repeating......

I'll never forget the first time I heard a lot of those early songs. They were so different from the "regular music" I had been exposed to my whole life. Thank god for MP3s, I'd probably be listening to awful rap, rock, or pop right now if it was'nt for them. And I would'nt be DJing either!!! Trance has truly been one of the most important things in my life

yea i got DJ sakin & friends' "Walk On Fire" album too. if you like DJ sakin's work you may like Chicane, and early works by BT and Paul van Dyk, then move on to Sasha's global underground mix albums if you wanna expand your view.

Back in 1996, two well know songs: Robert Miles - Children & Chicane - Offshore started the ball rolling for me

Well most of my life I've always been into Hip Hop, I've never really heard Electronic Music except for some of the popular dance anthems that were played on the radio in the mid 90's. I first started getting into trance around 2001. That's when I heard a trance tune played on a weird Coca-Cola commercial. Still don't even know what that tune is called, just remembered some guys in the woods drinking coke and trying to dance. I never heard anything like that before, and I thought it was interesting. Nobody else seemed to know what it was either, and my interest slowly faded away. It was rekindled after hearing Dirty Vegas-Days go By play in that infamous Mitsubishi commercial. I recognized that sound again and I knew I had to explore this strange technoey genre some more. I then heard it was called trance. So, without knowing a thing about it, I went to my local Best Buy and bought a couple of trance compilations. Hearing songs by X-Cabs, DJ Scot Project, Paul van Dyk and Sasha just made me want more. And I kept buying more trance albums.

I never really had a guide to the genre though, I just kept absently buying albums and hoping the tracks were to my liking. Sure I had managed to find tranceaddict.com in 2003 but I only did some lurking. Never really posted. I just kept doing that til just around this year when I went to Skills Electro Techno Disco Love on February 14, my first massive, and it just changed me. Since then, I went on an all out trance crusade. I hunted down people in my area who loved the music (which was a scant few btw), I joined more message boards, found resources to download, finally became an active member of TA, and now I finally have a better understanding of this crazy music. It's been a helluva ride, and so far, I've only plummeted down the first hill. The rest of the ride awaits.
