Toronto electro-dance producer and musician Joel Zimmerman (Deadmau5) is identifiable by the Muppet-y mouse head he wears onstage. It's not unusual for Zimmerman (who has performed in some 30 countries) to meet fans with rodent regalia even more spectacular than his own. But no longer, says the Grammy-nominated artist, who plans to unveil the mightiest mouse lid yet in about three months' time. I thought it came off as a bit pompous personally. Specifically:

I find that with most articles I've read about him. How quickly he forgets that it was the song merging DJs playing his stuff that got him noticed.

Far from that if you put yourself in his shoes... I've seen what he had to put up with personally before, during and after his performances, with random wanna be producers, managers, promoters, tea baggers constantly bugging his ass, promising him this ,promising that, each one coming up with what they think is a unique idea yet he's heard the same bulshit over and over by the last guy and before him. I laughed with him listenning to this from the side, I don't blame him at all. Anyone that goes from obscurity to rapid fame that fast is going to act like that. Joel wasn't bred by his parents from a young age to become what he is today, unlike other artists. For doing all this by himself without a talent and public speaking and PR coach, he's progressed quite normally.

Remind me again what electronic artists were raised by their parents to perform at raves?

I get that you know him personally, and I am sure there are annoyances to his job, but that's life...everyone's life. You can't deny it comes off a bit arrogant.

you know you are a dick when you play bal en blanc and are the only one out of 15 000 (performers included) wearing a black t shirt. According to a review in mtlta, it turns out he and his entourage were major cocks as well. What a hack.

As fast as this guy rose, I think he's going to fade away just as fast.

You know, he's a talented guy. However, when you lose touch with who and what you are producing music for, and furthermore, when you come to despise what you once loved, its only a matter of time until the separation is complete. However, I know exactly how that feels. I've been in a very similar position.

I know what you're saying Abercrombie. Joels cynacism is arrived at honestly. However, rather than simply becoming Jaded, he could very well steer his own ship and withdraw from what he despises, residing instead where he truly wants to live (career wise). Instead, he's externalizing the issues. We're the captains of our own ships, and he can simply withdraw from those places that he finds "disgusting". Otherwise, he only risks destroying his career and growing resentment.

I doubt his career will die just like that, just as fast... He's got a bright future ahead of him, even though it won't be in EDM production... you can't work all your life pounding out hits in this musical field. It will be music, but in other areas, perhaps movie scores and sustainable musical fields where a sustainable living is possible on the long term.

It definitely wouldn't be a quick death. Besides, he's been at this for years - his career has taken a long time to get to its point now. I know first hand, however, that the industry doesn't take extremely well to people it perceives as overly cynical.

The problem is that where his feelings are coming from is a genuine spot. I used to feel the same when back when I was in the rock business, and touring and what not. I thought of the whole thing as just a retarded, disgusting mess. However, in the way I dealt with things, it pissed a tonne of people off. Plus, nothing ever came off the way I intended, and by the way people make character judgments on this guy without even knowing him says the same thing is happening here. The old saying that "the people you meet on the way up are the same people you meet on the way down" comes to mind; if you aren't grateful for every bit of fortune that comes your way, then you will not receive said fortune for long.

Thats what I was getting at though; if he's growing jaded with the industry he's in, he should simply make an artistic choice and move on from it. The concretized ego does nothing but hinder the development of the self, which is the only reason to be working as an artist anyways. It's simply an externalized individuation pathway, no different than alchemy.

Yeah, he could have just shut himself out from message boards, random freelance media calls at the beginning, but he's a normal guy and blows off steam like everyone. I dont think hell die out, as once you have such an amazing marketing company as he does your name cannot die out. His tracks hit beatport top ten just because they have the brand Deadmau5 on them. At this point he could produce a track that would never make to the top 100 and but it doesnt matter. Not many people are able to listen to a track and really criticize it for what it is, we are all sheep.

As for him making music score for films? haha yah right thatll never happen. A music producer for films need to have musicality, a classically trained musician. You cannot just be a producer and jump into film. It takes years, you have to be able to comprehend a film and work with directors, dop's and a team.

Maybe hell work on car commercials...that seems to work for him.

Deadmau5 is a show - hes not an artist, and its rare that shows stick around for years. Not that he puts on a bad show but hes def no AC/DC.

and justice deserved to win.

Even to be a half decent song merging DJ takes talent and a certain type of skill. Unless I'm misinterpreting the meaning of "Song merging", as is likely.

He's made a few decent tunes.

There is way better DJs to listen to in Toronto without all the extra fluff and norms deadmau5 brings though.


Some of you dudes must have a real hard on for him.

So I noticed he will be DJing at Creamfields this year
