Originally posted by MissK Males are more predominant as DJ's than females because males have a tendency to be obsessive. I've discussed this with some male DJ friends and they will admit that it is a huge factor they will sit for days and mix and practice and get new tracks and produce new tracks. I mean DAYS. They obsess. They can't stop. They won't stop. The best are obsessive. trust. The love for the music is just the beginning.
btw...chemenhanced is doing a topless set over this long weekend..
amanda astra is a pretty good example of one starting out and disregarding any social boundaries. seems to be doing quite well (plug: she'll be doing a 3 hr set at hotel on thurs)

Ok, that post was a not-so-serious poke at the original posters linking things to feminism/etc.
But, hrmm - wish I could find the article again, I skimmed over it the other day, but it was along the lines of "Why men tend to become more obsessive gamers than women" (which I think can apply to this)
The gist of the article was though - Generally speaking, men have a different neurological response to 'winning' than females. There is a center in the brain that gets activated that triggers the 'reward' center of the brain.
This is why you generally see it's men that get addicted to things like video games, gambling, etc - its a neurological response. Part of being competitive is the desire to "win". This can include things like figuring out tough problems, perfecting a skill, or kicking someoens ass at a video game.
While females can be just as capable of doing it, they may not get the same 'rush' from it that men do, and may not lead to the same type of obsessive behavior.
Didn't read the whole study (and cant find the link for it right now), but I think that was the point they were getting at (atleast for video games), but don't think its that far of a stretch to apply it to other skills / etc.
The next time I go out and I see her, I'll ask if I can try on her sunglasses.

Originally posted by MissK I don't know any women that wouldn't dj based on the fact it's generally a male dominated career. I can't see this being a reason for a chick to not pick up the decks and go for it.

Originally posted by Skipper It is typical in male dominated industries, and it is subtle. It is not a reason why they don't start, but it can be a contributing factor to leaving. The boys club, the sexism, it is prevalent everywhere but obviously moreso in male dominated professions.

Originally posted by El K Dee in terms of djing, all that is just speculation on part of the worried woman. guys love female djs (and yes i speak on behalf of all males on earth..lol)

Originally posted by Skipper Sexism, boys club, lower pay, it is not speculation, in DJing or any other profession. Give women some credit, they do not leave something they love because of mere speculation.
Why do we care what a person who has been partying for 1.5 years has to say?
I actually read the whole thing and I think I deserve congratulations. I don't know why the bashing of top 40 clubs was in there or the feminist rant either.
Believe me, we may think the people in the top 40 scene are goofs, but they think the same about us.

Originally posted by Skipper I don't doubt that happens. It happens everywhere, with men and women. That's totally not what I'm talking about though. It's funny how you seem to equate what I am talking about with being lazy though...no surprise I guess.
quote:
Originally posted by El K Dee I'm not equating with laziness but rather poor/passive marketing. I've seen far more skilled/talented female djs that haven't made it anywhere than the ones everyone in TO seem to love and admire. And these women got gigs whenever they wanted....promoters willingly gave them opportunities.. In fact, I'm gonna be so bold to say that if I were a woman, I'd prolly already be big in the scene
