My Mom and I gab in French all the time and her husband slowly picked up on words here and there so he now understands. If it's a personal conversation that has nothing to do with him or anything that'll interest him - we speak in French and I don't see a problem with that and neither does he. Get over it. If he wants to have a conversation in his native tongue, so be it. Who are you to get pissy about it? I understand being annoyed at first thinking they might be talking about you because people who are around others speaking a different language thing they are being talked about. If you've mentioned it once and he told you to get over it, get over it. It'll also be a way for you to learn French. |

| Originally posted by Slylee well because it's not like i'm taking lessons or anything or saying, "how do you say this?". in japan i was taught how to say things (by my dad and in class) and i just meant that i had a perfect accent and pronunciation...some people just have a knack for that stuff and i'm one of them. you can tell me how to say something in another language and i'll pretty much say it exactly the way the person said it and they are usually like "oh wow that sounded perfect"... that sorta thing. |

Parisian, oui oui.
Sorry Jbomb, Je t'aime, but someone had to be stern with your complaining. Stern I say.

I can totally relate to how you feel however, I think my situation was a little more extreme. I would go to my Boyfriends cottage with him, and there would be his parents, his brother and sister, and about 4 other people all speaking Polish. I was the only native English speaker, and I would sit there not knowing WTF was going on for hours.
It really started to get to me because I was completely ostracized except for the occasional time they would talk to me in English. I was unable to participate in any of the conversations, and when they were all laughing, I would start feeling really left out.
It was becoming obvious that it was difficult/annoying for them having to translate to me every time I would ask "what happened, what did she say?!"
Had we not broken up for other reasons, I wonder if that would have eventually been a big problem with us.
With that being said, I made a concerted effort to learn basic Polish such that I could communicate to a certain degree with his family, and anytime he would have a passing conversation in Polish, it didn't bother me.
I could see you being aggravated if it was all the time, but if it's a rare occasion, just let it be, and learn the language!
To put it into perspective.... if you were in Italy, everyone was speaking Italian and you could kind of communicate but it was a chore, would you not be happy/relieved to have someone to talk to in English if you had the chance?
