grabbed and listening.
will let you know my thoughts on it after I'm done
Alright so I listened twice now and I figure it's about time to give my impressions. I suppose I'll start with the brief listening notes I made:
| quote: |
| transition at around 9:20...oncoming track is a lot louder than outgoing track! (track too loud in general!) Seems like it's gonna stay louder. Guess you forgot to raise the master volume levels. You should have kept them as they were at the beginning though. Mix-in at around 34:20 was brilliant, really. Great mix into the Mr. Jones track. Actually happens to be the only track here that I have/know. Very nice mix out of this one too! The beat at 1:04:43 is soooo insane! |
Thanks for the lengthy review Adam, it's very much appreciated
You're right about the levels, from a technical point of view I find that's one of the hardest parts for me to get right whenever I'm presented with the odd track that is noticeably louder or quieter than the rest. To be honest here, I didn't notice the obvious difference in levels on that transition until I listened to the mix the first time after I recorded it.
I wish I had caught it when I was mixing because I would have started all over again. I was only 9 minutes into the mix, lol.
Also, thanks for the nice comments regarding the programming and flow. That is definitely something I strive to do every time and it feels very good to know that it comes out right.
Again, thanks for taking the time to write this. I'll definitely be working extra on the points you mentioned.
Great stuff Oscar, you're improving ever mix you put out and it's really obvious. Flow on this was really well done, and although I'm not the biggest fan of deep house, this kept my interest throughout.
Your blending is getting very good. There were a couple transitions where stuff wasn't exactly perfect, but it was never detracting from anything. The transitions at the 32 minute mark was really well done I thought.
I think you've got a lot of potential man, keep at it.
this is also getting bumped at work today. thanks alot oscar

I downloaded this right when you put it up but am a bit late with the comments... anyways, I think you once again did a great job!
Mixing shows a big improvement from Tones or Dark Light, you pick great points in the tracks to transition out of, and you let the mix flow, not abruptly cut out. Set programming is good, each track seems to draw on what came before it, adding a bit more energy and melody... there's a great peak/effective conclusion (apart from 'Stay', which I will get to in a minute).
The only complaints I have with it are, like others said, on occasion the volume levels (especially on the transition from 'Pantek 400' to 'Lost Friends') were a bit off. And, after you started to build and build towards a proggier and more uplifting finish, I felt the more soulful and more low-key 'Stay' was out of place.
Track wise, the highlights for me are the Inner City-reminiscent song @ around 35 min, and of course 'My Kicks', and the Milton Jackson mix of 'Lassur'... Absolutely in love with Milton Jackson's stuff ATM.
yo man, I really enjoyed this, great flow throughout, very mellow. perfect for doing homework!
keep it up

I thought this mix was alright but overall the tracks just weren't quite to my taste - a lot of them were nice but not amazing or that catchy. Perhaps on second listen I'd appreciate them more. I thought that the mixing was quite good though, pretty smooth throughout and no real clashes or anything.
Thanks for listening mate
Like it a lot. Still need to listen through all in one sitting, but even in snippets it goes down smooth.
Thanks for the listen Jeff, glad you liked it
Oscar, could you recommend some sets similar to this?
Sure buddy, here you go:
Maxwell Dub - My 3rd Ear
Jeff Button - DigDeep Vol.1
Braxn - Deep House Promo
Speakeasy mixed by Rob Turner
Bart van Wissen - In Love With Deepology
I also recommend you subscribe to the Urban\\Torque Records podcast on iTunes.
Awesome, thanks. Love Rob's set. I will download the rest of those now!

Make sure you check out Shur-I-Kan's Podcast too.
This has become my go-to set whenever I'm pissed off at work!
The first track makes me shiver, and they don't stop before the whole set is over
Loved all of your sets, but this one is the best... for now
Edit: If I had one wish.... It would be a 'timetable' for the tracks... Can you be arsed to do it?

Great set Woscar
Hey Oscar...sorry took so long! Took a vacation from music
I enjoyed the mix - your style has grown, yet you've stayed true to your sound - deep, melodic house.
The flow was incredible, but I think that may have been a flaw too. Some say sets are supposed to sound like many tracks made into 1, and that's what this was for me. The tracks are nice, but a bit too samey for my liking. It was just above an hour but it seemed longer, almost drawn out. I'd spice it up a bit with some variety. I know there's a "theme" to the mix but don't be afraid to cross those boundaries a bit. Need to catch people off guard from time to time.
I guess you could compare it to Howell's Renaissance mix, it gets going and never seems to take off.
Maybe this is part one of another set to come?
I liked it, your transitions are better, maybe just needed something a bit more energetic from my break of music.
Overall, successful mix.
No problem dude
You see, this was supposed to be a longer set which was actually going to take off after 'Stay'. It was going to be mixed out into Crazy P - Love on the Line (Art of Tones Photon Dub) and really take off from there. But I decided to keep it down to an 80 minute mix at the last minute as I was recording it.
I totally see what you mean, though and it's definitely something that I'll take into consideration for future sets. Thanks for listening and for the comments
