Sounds like he really knows his stuff.

edit // And if he's not using headphones than he edits all his tracks to be the exact BPM. Traktor doesn't beatmatch for you.

The programming of the mixing and tracks to create an experience. Carisma is a great thing, but means nothing if you're music sucks. I wouldn't love someone like Zabs any less if he just stood there. And even someone like Glaude, at least has dj skills and a decent track selection. One of the things we pride ourself on in the EDM scene and especially on this board is having good taste in music and djs...although our opinions may vary. He's done something right to get to where he is...but it's not his musical talent. And his carisma...you can stick a cd in of badly mixed Justice and Boyz Noize remixes and have any drunken asshole in a sparkle shirt jump up and down on stage if you want to be entertained. Fact is anyone with taste would lose interest when the music selection jumps around while being mixed poorly. And the first time he played at Vanguard, he played no less than 4 Justice remixes. I mean come on man.

See the thing is, what im saying is valid if you want to climb the DJ ladder. You don't have to do the song and dance to be a good DJ or play good music. So i'm not saying you have to do it to be considered good musically at all. What i'm saying, if you want to be fully recognized by the promoter, the club goer who pay your checks by showing up to your shows, because they know you'll entertain them, then you have to make urself unique in a way that is memorable to them ON TOP of the great music. Its something extra that the most successful DJs seem to have. Do you need it to be a great DJ? No. Do you need it to be successful? I think it definately helps.

Steve Aoki is an example, but not the example you or anyone here should follow, he overdoes it, there are others who do it in other ways like Eric Morillo or Carl Cox or Lee Burridge. So do you have to be a monkey? No. All you have to do is show your passion for what you do, and nothing is wrong with that.

He has such a HUGE following where I live, its so strange. Basically any DJ that plays some form of 'electro' is beloved here. I went to an Aoki show once or 2wice and he'll play a lot of crap and then drop a big hit in there then back to more bad house/electro stuff. His antics on stage are stupid when he starts standing on the decks and falling off because he's too drunk and shit. One time here, he kept knocking the decks off and skipping the CDs because he was drinkin straight out of the goose bottle so the resident had to step in and take over... that is unprofessional.

If you say so.

Plenty of dj's get physical. It's not something new.

Need the caption for the Peter Hook video of him playing the CD from mixmag!

From Wikipedia...

"Since 2002, Peter Hook has begun doing DJ sets, though numerous videos recorded of him live show him doing nothing more than playing a free CD included in Mixmag."

Here's anyone video of him "mixing" for the hell of it!

Oh my GOD that's pathetic and hilarious at the same time! Honestly though I wouldn't have any problem with a DJ just walking up on stage throwing a mix CD on - so long as it was original work and it moved me.

It's definitely not necessary to see the DJ in order to enjoy a set, but if the DJ is a showman with presence & charisma it certainly adds to the overall.

I found it hard to watch the videos of Aoki he was so bad on so many levels. Thought him to be a bit campy TBH. To each their own...

What do you mean? Hes a geniusss.
And look at the finesse and timing, he was able to handoff the shoe and then pump his fist in time for the beat dropping in. Mortal? It is questionable, and potential blasphemy.

Comedic genius of course...
