RIP

Posted by Skipper on May-20-2009 20:14:

This outcome can't come as a surprise to anyone can it? I mean, there were absolutely zero clues that she was still alive. No ransoms, no major sightings, nada.
Still sad of course : (

Nope, I knew she was dead as soon as she was missing... no surprise there.

What is a surprise is that they have lain charges sans body...

And where was the press conference? Can't find anything online.

WOODSTOCK Charges have been laid in the abduction and murder of eight-year-old Victoria Tori Stafford.

Two accused made brief court appearances in a Woodstock court this morning to be arraigned on charges relating to the police investigation that started when Stafford was reported missing on April 8.

Terri-Lynn McClintic, 18, is charged with abducting Stafford from her parents Tara McDonald and Rodney Stafford. She was also read charges of assisting Michael Thomas C. S. Rafferty in escaping the area.

Rafferty, 28, was also read charges of having abducted Stafford, and then, in Woodstock and elsewhere in Ontario, having murdered her. McClintic was read a third charge of having been an accessory to murder after the fact.

Security at the Oxford County Court House was high for the accuseds first appearance, as all members of the public entering the courtroom were searched with a metal detector. McClintic was read her charges first, appearing in the basement courtroom dressed all in black with her hair in braids. She remained composed as her charges were read.

Rafferty was visibly upset as he entered the courtroom, exchanging glances with his mother who was seated in the front row. Prior to the arrival of the justice of the peace, Rafferty broke down and began crying.

When he stood to have his charges read and was asked if he understood his charges, he said yes through tears.

McClintic is listed as a resident of Wilson Street, where a couple of Oxford Community Police Service cruisers were standing guard Wednesday. Rafferty is listed as a resident of Tennyson Street.

Both have been remanded in custody for a video appearance in Woodstock court on Thursday May 28. While McClintic was escorted out of the Oxford County Court House almost immediately, Rafferty was held in the building for several more hours as media continued to gather outside the prisoner-transfer area.

Neither has counsel and their application for legal aid is one of the reasons why the case has been held over.

Security was tighter than that when I went to the Bernardo/Homolka trials, and justifyably so.

Obviously her mother took her to their house and left her there. I knew she did it.

Although Renton would not say where that search would lead them, recovery efforts were apparently underway in a rural area outside Guelph known as Rockwood, about an hour east of Woodstock.

I just called my mom in Rockwood, and she said a halikopter was flying overhead for quite some time, and cherry-lit police cars were flying by on Wellington Rd 22 by their farm.

This just in...

The search went on for close to an hour. Eventually, the police packed up the dog and drove away, leaving just one officer to monitor the scene, just off Highway 6 at County Road 22 nearly 100 kilometres from Woodstock where Tori was abducted six weeks ago.

...right near my mom's place.

all very sad, but still i think there are too many questions that need answering....i dont think they've gotton anywhere and am curious as to why the two charges were laid. that artcle is messed up

Two arrests made in the murder of 8-year-old Victoria Stafford

quote:
A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder

quote:
who had been missing for over a month.

but she's still missing....

quote:

Police have not officially released information on the girl's whereabouts.

historically, dont cases like these announce right away when the body is found? Cecilia Zang (some other spelling, but happened in Mississauga a few years back) and two others that year i remember hearing about the found body before anything else. why not release it this time around?

quote:
the suspects ...did not know that Tori was the girl they allegedly took.

wasnt the first piece of evidence the video showing the girl happy and concluded that she knew the abductor? so now if they didnt know her, disputes first statement i think..

quote:
Tori was last seen April 8 on surveillance video as she was leaving her school with an unidentified woman

wait..unidentified? it wasnt the lady who was just arrested....now im confused? Where did these two suspects come from when 1. they werent the ones who abducted her and 2. she is still missing but murder charges are being laid..

quote:
Police sources tell CP24 that they're still searching for Tori's body.

so how do they know she was murdered??

quote:
With files from The Canadian Press.

all in all...very confusing turn of events and i think this case is far from over...

While it is odd that they were convicted for murder without a body...I believe that there is a lot of information that they aren't telling us.

They are searching for the body right now within a specific location near Guelph I believe, so perhaps they confessed to killing her. Who knows, but the entire situation is a little messed up since there has been no body found.

Precisely... there was some hard evidence for a judge to agree to signing an arrest warrant.

Halikopters are still flying all around my mom's place today as well. She's called me already this morning, and is afraid the body has been dumped in her woods or field, and would hate to go through all the drama at her place if all sh!t really happened there.

Yeah, she went to her daughters apartment looking for "medication". She looks like a crackhead BIG TIME!!!!

Then the cops told her to leave cause the landlord said she wasn't allowed on the property....

Ok, so apparently the girls neighbors called police when they released the sketch of the lady who took the girl from the school and realized it looked like her. Neighbors told police she had a white coat and had also just cut her hair the day the sketch was released. Police interviewed her and compared her walk to the suspect in the video but had let her go.

(apparently the neighbors were so suspicious that they would call her into their homes as the news was on and she would leave suddenly every time. They even contacted police at 4am one morning because they were so convinced it was her)

This Tuesday they called her in again for questioning and thats when she decided to help police and then they made the arrests. She has been also trying to help police locate the body near some rock pile outside of Guelph. I assume she told them thats where they hid the body...

Pretty sure you meant charged, as conviction comes after trial and guilt is proved beyond the measure of reasonable doubt. But you're absolutely right, there's a LOT that the OPP and the investigating bodies aren't telling the media and public.

Niether the OPP or counsel for McClintic are talking about the connection between herself and Stafford's mother. Also, it's really quite odd that now this person originally only charged with Abduction and Accessory-after-the-fact is wheeling the OPP all over the Guelph area with nothing having turned up yet (that we've been informed of).

Also kind of strange how this has shifted to a murder investigation so suddenly with no body - This must mean they have some REALLY solid evidence or a confession. There's something really strange about this whole thing still.

As I stated above, she has apparently confesed to her part during her second or third interview by police. That was Tuesday night, and they laid charges the next day. She has obviously informed them that she was killed and is now trying to lead them to the body...

Posted by Skipper on May-22-2009 14:08:

I find the whole thing still really bizarre as well. Very little info has been released.

Posted by plaxx on May-22-2009 14:20:

Apparently the girl charged is helping the Police locate her body. I'm going to be pissed if they cut her a deal for her cooperation.

Why? That's how it works.

I think they've already done that to be honest. She was obviously the one who took her from school AND knows where the body was hidden. Any other police force would have charged her with the murder too. I think she's hasen't been charged with murder becasue she's agreed to help them locate the body and testify against her boyfriend.

It is odd that they haven't found the body yet though?

Posted by plaxx on May-22-2009 14:35:

I know that's how it works, and I'm inclined to agree with latter post. They probably dropped the murder charge and stuck her with accessory to murder instead.

But again, there is a lot of information that they haven't told us. I would've been pissed because what deal could they cut on someone who is charged with Accessory to Murder, and Abduction ... 6 months in jail, and community service?

Yes, its been two days and they only have an 'idea' of where it is. They could be even looking in the wrong place as well.
