This movie didn't really test any serious moral or ethical questions, nor did it really do any of the scientific speculation (er... sci-fi) that TNG was so famous for. As far as the "science" goes in this movie, it's more of a hey, check out this flashy futuristic product and/or weapon - which to be fair, felt more realistic as it's exactly how we treat today's technology, but Star Trek was never about realism. As Yohan said, this movie doesn't really make you think at all; in that respect it's almost more of an action flick than sci-fi.

This hit the nail on the head for me.

As for 'coming up with Star Trek further in the future, it IS doable. So is a lot more sci fi, it just takes someone groundbreaking to come out of the woodwork...(movie OR text wise)

so I watched this with Ukrainian translation on top lol
I was in giggles over Chekov's russian/ukrainian (since they dubbed the English parts in Ukie and the rest was in Ruski) - funny

I haven't really followed the series but I really liked the movie. I think all the characters were well developed, none of the scenes dragged for too long.

Solid 9/10 for me

I understand where you guys are coming from, but Trek clearly needed to go in a different direction than what everyone had become accustomed to, dont' you think? After First Contact, the movies were crap and didn't make very much money and the ratings for Voyager and especially Enterprise were pretty weak.

Sure, they shit all over the continuity and the canon, but I don't see how this movie destroys or takes anything away from what came before.
