yup.
edit: i cannot grow in the backyard because it is landscaped and a vegetable garden would make it look ugly. i can only grow indoor but i do not have a room dedicated for it so i have to buy all this stuff.

Ahh, so that answers what was going to be my next question... why not outdoors! What about just small pots outdoors? off to the side. I know lots of friends who grow nice little gardens without an actual vegtable garden but using decorative pots.

not enough direct sunlight in my house cuz my mom's 40+ orchids already occupy all the window space. also, potted plants tend to get a lot of little critters. my tent doesnt have a single insect or bug.

CFl's are great but they lose intensity very fast over short distances so the light still needs to be kept 2-3 inches above the plant and you still need multiple lights. ive done lots of research before purchasing my HPS and HPS/MH was still the best route.

the brightest 200watt CFL only has about 10,000 lumens. two of those bulbs will draw 400watts and emit 20,000 lumens while one single 400watt HPS has 50,000 lumens.

here are my seedlings for the 2010 growing season.

they include bhut jolokia peppers, jalapeno peppers, tabasco peppers, scotch bonnet peppers, cayenne peppers and california wonder sweet peppers.

all of them (except the jalapeno) will be grown in Pro-Mix BX soilless mix in 3gallon grow bags in my backyard. the jalapenos will be grown in a new hydroponic system (top feed drip) that im building in my basement.

i have turned in to such a gardening whore.

Hahah, no doubt. The Aerogarden appeals to me because it's foolproof, and I don't want to mess with huge stuff like your setup. Aerogardens are basically set it and forget it, other than adding water and nutrient packs every few weeks. So easy, and I loves me some cherry tomatoes.

The Canadian Aerogarden website has the Aerogarden Spacesaver 6 for $145, but the US website has an outlet section that has them for $39 USD. A pity I can't order from there.

damn. for $40 i would buy two. for $145 i would not even buy one.

Anyone know of any plants/flowers/herbs that dont need a lot of light to grow and maintain? We just moved, but our new place has a massive apartment building next to us and blocks all direct sunlight. My basil (etc) was dead in the first two weeks (after surviving for 2 years in full bloom).

depending on how dark it is you might not be able to grow anything there.

btw if you grow basil to eat then you should pinch off all flowers when you first see them budding. when the basil plant uses its energy to grow flowers (rather than vegetation) it loses flavour.

it is one 400watt HID light (400w lumatek digital ballast with sunmaster 'neutral deluxe' metal halide bulb)

Scientific Name: Beaucarnea Recurvata
Lighting: Bright Light
Watering: Moderate to Low

Ponytail Palm

Ponytail palms get their name from their ponytail like appearance. The Ponytail palm is one of my top 10 easy to grow houseplants. It requires very little attention. The only downfall to the Ponytail palm is that it is an extremely slow grower, so don't expect great growth spurts from year to year.

The Ponytail palm should be watered thoroughly once every 7 - 14 days. The Ponytail palm is native to desert areas therefore, it has a root system similar to cactus in that the roots go deep in order to store water for long dry spells. Be sure to let the soil become dry to touch 1" to 1-1/2" deep before watering again. If you notice the lower foliage is starting to turn a yellow or brown color you may be under watering the plant. The Ponytail palm requires bright light so be sure to place it near a window where full sun is received.

Bugs and mites usually are not a problem with the palm, however if they do appear, simply spray the houseplant down with a soapy water mix twice a day until they are gone.

overwatering is a very common problem with many plants. the ponytail palm is more susceptable to it because it requires even less water than the average plant.
