Oh good 'ol Daddy McGuinty...our society would be in a tornado of reckless carnage if it wasn't for your great ideas.

If I had a lawn I would get a mechanical push mower. Something classy about having one of those (having to sharpen the blades, the unique noise, etc).

I had a neighbor who had one and it worked great. The key is to hone the blades before every use and keep it well oiled.

As an aside: as a former professional lawn care expert, the cutting of grass via a circular rotational blade (traditional lawn mower) does not come close to creating a nice lawn vs. a horizontally rotating blade. If you see what they use to cut grass on golf greens you will see an automatic version of the mechanical push mower (horiztonal blade rotation). The horizontal cutting puts less stress on the blade and (assuming the blades are sharp) produces a much more even, green and "fuller" pitch.

If you can't operate an electric lawnmower without fear of running over the cord, or can't be bothered to mow your lawn at least once a week so that your electric mower doesn't get bogged down in your terribly kept lawn, you should probably kill yourself

Indulge my curiosity here - what is your definition of "necessary?" And "need?"

My neighbours used some of those old shit mowers back when I lived in North York, and I can't say I was much of a fan, but you're indicating an urgency here that's not substantiated by anything in particular, and as a defense you claim it's OK because it's going to take a few years to implement. Please tell me I don't have spell out what's lacking from your argument.

like someone said..they don't want to waste time to educate so they just force the issue with laws and legislation...it's the quick and easy way to deal with things.....

holy shit. i agree with everything you wrote here

Now, that just sounds ridiculous. You know that certain tropical plants and fruits have to be transported across large distances to be brought to our food-stores here in Canada, because they simply won't grow in this kind of climate - I think that that's a generally accepted fact. But what about those which don't? What's wrong with locally produced tomatoes, apples, pears... ??? The less distance that they have to travel from the farmer's field to your local super/market, the less the environmental imapact (and cost) they are to transport; the food can be fresher, and you're supporting your local economy. What's wrong with that?

Wow, this has got to be like the first quote/statement of yours that I agree with. Way to go!! (Although I feel that your previous statement above seems to contract your supposed inclination to support the local, Canadian, economy - why is that?)

Will I merit a response from you this time? (Unlike in the shopping bags thread)

Why don't they just go ahead and ban grass while they're at it?

On the other hand whoever invented the weedwacker and leafblower needs to be shot. I'm getting a bit sick of being woken up at 7am everyday by RRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

and not being able to do a thing about it because the owner of the resort next door can spot a weed a mile away

you know i was being somewhat sarcastic right?

Nothing wrong with local produce. But i can see a ban or tax coming on tropical food for the reasons stated

I buy local when i can but i dont need the government to tell me or "bleed me" to do so

I want to publically say that I sprayed my lawn with herbicide last week, and all my dandelions have pretty much curled up and died now (I still have 2 1l bottles of Killex saved from previous years. What took me 15 minutes to do spraying, it saved me 2 hours of pulling the little fcukers out. My lawn looks good and have no regrets.

On a side note, I've walked through a park near the CNE last week, and there were more dandelions than grass. I suffer from hay fever, and I sympathize with everyone like myself who have been suffering even more the last 2 years because of the ban.

They should also ban water vapour; it's the largest greenhouse gas by volume (99%). California tried capping water vapour emissions years ago.

it might sound rediculous, but thats exactly the type of thinking that is gaining tracking in this whole global warming debacle:

quote:
Burping of the lambs blows roast off menu

GIVE up lamb roasts and save the planet. Government advisers are developing menus to combat climate change by cutting out high carbon food such as meat from sheep, whose burping poses a serious threat to the environment.

Fuck that! Lambs & goats are delicious & double as zero hydro-carbon lawnmowers.

Plus they make great backpacks...

Which reminds me...

From the google blog:

quote:
At our Mountain View headquarters, we have some fields that we need to mow occasionally to clear weeds and brush to reduce fire hazard. This spring we decided to take a low-carbon approach: Instead of using noisy mowers that run on gasoline and pollute the air, we've rented some goats from California Grazing to do the job for us (we're not "kidding"). A herder brings about 200 goats and they spend roughly a week with us at Google, eating the grass and fertilizing at the same time. The goats are herded with the help of Jen, a border collie. It costs us about the same as mowing, and goats are a lot cuter to watch than lawn mowers.

I think if Toronto gets rid of gas lawnmowers they should hire goats to travel the neighbourhoods

True, but PETA went apeshit again on Google for making animals do labour and questioned their working conditions.

the CNE is a deathzone for allergy sufferers... last summer the 1 time i went down there, my allergies went hardcore on me and all i had on me at the time was some naturopathic allergy stuff which was totally ineffective (i normally need benadryl when this shit goes full tilt)
