I can't think of my dad using any sort of force on me since I was maybe 10 when I go my last spanking. Can't remember ever having a shouting match either.

yeah.. i hit him across the face once and he hit me back, it was an exchange. i regret it but he pushed me to it. we apolagized to each other and its nothing to be proud of ... i just have a the reflex of standing up for myself, against anybody.

not that i can remember. although as a child he hit me many times, not that i remember any of those incidents (which may or may not be a good thing.) most of the time now it's just arguments.

he's always been a person that loves to blame other people instead of looking at his own flaws. hot-headed and irrational is an understatement. like eric's dad, some days he'll be fine and cool, but you can always sense an undercurrent of rage and the tiniest thing will set him off. i know i shouldn't buy into his shit, but the way he argues is so infuriating because he shuts down to any other views, doesn't listen, and has mind=boggling logic. it's like arguing with a little kid in an adult's body. he's told me on several occasions of his rough childhood and it seems like he's never let that go and takes it out on everyone else.

anyway, i suppose most of the subconscious fear of him that i learned as a child is still there because when he's around i usually talk in a quiet, higher voice and feel generally awkward.

i think he knows that i could probably drop him now if he ever came at me and that's why he still yells a lot and uses his aggressiveness to keep me in that state. it's just a matter of convincing my unconscious mind that i don't have to take his shit.

I really was only speaking for myself and my situation. I can't even imagine what it would be like and how I would act in yours.

i disagree.. c*nts are c*nts regardless of what connection they are to you.

in england, once you are 16 you are considered a man and competant enough of makign your own way through life.. if by that age your dad is belittling you and just generally being an arse and dosnt respect your rights as an 'adult' then words need to be had... if words dont work, then henceforth with the fisticuffs.

by the way, ive never hit anyone. i had one fight when i was at school but i couldnt bring myswelf to hit hmi in the face, he must have woke up next morning with The most painful ribs

one thing is for sure...i will never hit my kids. even though i got a good ass whopping until i was a teenager, i just don't think all kids are cut out for it and it's not a good way to express yourself or get a point across, period.

any parent who can get a point across in a respectful manner is worthy of respect. because the bottom line is that any kid who hits their parent has no respect, which means the parent is probabaly not respectable or has never acted in a way that has gained the respect of their kid.

my dad has never laid a hand on me and yea i know i'm a girl and it's different but my dad just has a way with words and his approach that has made me have the utmost respect for him. i have thrown shit at my mom and called her a bitch and she has slapped me in the face and called me a bitch and i have not once in my 27 years in life raised my voice to my father. that's how i want to be with my kids.

*edit* and don't get me wrong. i love my mom and we're very close now that i've matured and all that, but i defintely don't respect the way she was with me and we're still very different, but she's cool and she's been through some shit...i just wish she didn't drag me along for the ride lol it's not good parenting, but whatever. no one's perfect. she had an alcoholic mom and 5 siblings to raise. such is life.

not to me.you do what you have to do.this is how people like that fuction they use fear and intimidation on their wives and children to show power.once you break that it usually breaks them.thats what happened with my ex's dad.that one fight showed him he can no longer beat his family.

if i had walked in on that fight between me ex's brother and father the dad would have been going to the hospital.cuz about a week before the fight she told me a story about him beating her when she was a little girl that was so brutal i almost went to her house and kicked his teeth in even though it was like ten years before.

its not about respecting your elders.its not about respecting your parents or somebody elses parents.these people are absolutely scum they deserve nothing.dont ever back down to people like that.and if your not strong enough to do it you can always tell someone that is.dont let one person ruin your life or the life of your family.including the family you may one day have.
