I thought stepping out of your comfort zone was the whole point of this challenge to begin with. I find it depressing if people really think it is "torture" to dig for new music when it involves more than a couple of clicks on Beatport.

edit: For the record, this wasn't why I suggested skweee. It was simply because I thought that a mix of it would be interesting to hear, as it is a quite fresh and different kind of music that has been established as a genre of its own (unlike "deep techno" and similar muddy subgenres).

I think that the ultimate objective of any time spent behind the decks is to produce something people will enjoy. I really enjoyed your progressive house mix, which wouldn't have been made if not for this challenge. Stretching yourself for the sake of it isn't fun.

I wasn't referring to your skweee mix, although asking a player to do a lot of research AND hunt their own tracks is a lot for a fun game. I just seriously doubt the people suggesting schranz, casiocore or ghettotech in these threads are even in any position to judge the final product.

I'm skipping.

bullshit, when i first asked for casiocore in the first competition i thought id throw a curveball, but it wasnt allowed.. so no problem, it is way too obscure, but schranz? lots of people like schranz, its not unheard of, there ARE big DJ's in schranz, i think this is just more a case of if you got picked to do schranz, you would hate it because you think people wouldnt download it. well i felt this way also in the first competition when i was assigned THE worst possible genre anyone could have picked for me [italo], i still did my mix.

and im sure more people listen to schranz over italo.

i agree on no too 'exotic' suggestions, like skwee and the casiocore i suggested before. but schranz is a very recognised style, and if your not willing for it to be included in this competition, well thats just dumb

Been listening to dance music for 12 years and have no idea what schranz is... honestly.

Posted by Light The Fuse on Jun-25-2009 15:50:

Adam420 (or whatever that number is) is right tbh...just say the fucking style and mix is....i wanna make isreali fucking death tech schranz hop...like fuck!

anywho just letting ya know i know get 60 gig a month download limit, a mp3 player i use a lot, a big mouth and ill be listening to all mixes and being honest with my comments!

house remixes of top 40 mainstream hip hop

I never had a moments doubt about accepting Schranz. But I think the presence of too many obscure genres scares some people off. And indeed this round misses some "usual suspects" from Trance, House, Psy, etc, which of course can't be blamed on individual entries but seems to be a general trend.

I was just thinking that I could compile a list of genres (based on suggestions) for a future round and only then open the registration. I never wanted to centralize that muc influence on myself but it might be a solution if the weirdness gets out of hand.
I always thought that something as simple as Vocal Trance or Deep House would already be quite hard for a lot of people who don't listen to it.

well theres only 2 genres mentioned so far that id like to do,.. but i highly doubt ill get one i want lol.

*prepares himself to be lumbered with nu jazz*

From this I can establish two things:

1. You know nothing about Italo.
2. You have terrible taste.

That's not exactly a genre, is it?

Posted by Light The Fuse on Jun-25-2009 16:26:

I can do a 'progressive nudisco mix' for the comp...and thats no joke

Are any of the other ones in here actually "real" genres?

well im not getting into an argument about it, so yeah, go on then, you are correct

my point was, schranz is not an obscure style, far from it. and schranz to you is probably as enjoyable as italo is to me. if you dont want to risk having to spin something you dont like, then dont enter, simple.

schranz is somethign that i listen to [not an awful lot tho] so i can judge the persons mix fine, so it appears i fit all the criteria you were moaning about earlier

My point is that the name should describe the sound of what a DJ is expected to play. "Remixes of Top 40 tracks" doesn't do that and is not much different from "Tracks with a Q in the name".

I haven't entered, and I've been giving my reasons. I entered last time, got tech house which I don't like and actually finished my mix within a few days, so you can't accuse me of neshing out on things I don't want to mix.

I thought it was a given that nobody around here would actually want to listen to schranz. If I'm wrong then I'm wrong.

I was more referring to schranz, trancey breaks, and skweee.

Chris Liebing sets from around 2002 were typical for schranz as well, even though he plays on a much slower BPM. Mayday 2003

Registration is closed!

In the next 24 hours those who successfully participated in a previous round can place their veto on a genre they don't want to get.

ah cool, i didnt know we could do this.. theres 2 i really would be unhappy about if i got them.. those 2 would be:

# Downtempo/Ambient
# Nu Jazz

i'd still have a go at it, but i wouldnt be too pleased about it
