Well to you it isn't honorable, and I will agree that there are fans who are just stupid (the one's who boo when it goes to the mat, and just want bloodshed) but, mma is competition. Not a camera following someone down the street picking a fight. People agree to face off against one another to see if their knowledge and skill set is better than their opponent. So yea you are to avoid a fight outside of the ring/cage/dojo, but almost all martial arts have some sort of competition attached to them. Karate, jujitsu, kickboxing, etc, all have their independent bodies that sanction fights/competitions.

i wrote something long and deleted it and condensed it.

1) There are rules and they are safer than what the UFC offered 15 years ago, as well as safer than what Japan had to offer.
2) It is a competition and the returning fighters are the ones that see it as such. Street fighters, trouble makers, drama queens usually don't make it very far in competition or the eyes of management.
3) Boxing is almost exclusively targeted on trauma to the head. Yes, MMA looks violent, but it is safer in that the referees are trained to stop a fight when a fighter is out or can no longer defend himself. Boxing referees are trained to stop the fight when a fighter can not defend himself or recover from a moment where he could no longer defend himself. No disrespect to referees of either discipline.
4) There have been 2 deaths in MMA. One happened in Ukraine(?) in an unsanctioned fight, which might have well been a street fight. The fighter was not required to take a health examination, and after being knocked out, he died. It was later realized he had a brain tumor. The second happened recently (maybe last year in New Jersey?). He was knocked out at a sanctioned event. I believe he had brain surgery in his medical history, but was cleared to fight by a doctor who presumed enough time had relapsed.
A lot more people have died or have received permanent brain damage as a result of boxing.
5) boxing is fixed.

I do, but that just makes it more fun to root for the ones who aren't, and to see idiots swinging wildly suddenly get caught with a perfectly-timed counter or submission.

The Medical Advisory Committee under the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation convened last Friday to review its investigation of the death of Sam Vasquez, who became the first fighter in the U.S. to die from injuries sustained in competition.

Vasquez competed in his third professional bout on October 20, 2007, when he faced Vince Libardi at the Toyota Center in Houston. He was knocked down with a punch in the third round and subsequently collapsed. Vasquez underwent a series of surgeries to relieve pressure on his brain and was in a comatose state for six weeks before succumbing to the blunt force trauma on Nov. 30.

No but in all seriousness, I love MMA. I think that it takes extreme talent and skills (and especially since I've been learning how to fight, I have 106841354x more respect now that I know how HARD it really is). We totally get all into it and I laugh when his friends are talking about a fighter and I'm like "yea, remember when he fought so and so though? He was so off of his game!" and they're like you're a GIRL!

Inversely, when some meathead like Carlos Newton gets raped by an intelligent Matt Hughes is pretty sweet too.

that's what I meant...

Incorrect. There have been several instances where they go at least 2 or 3 rounds - even five. Recently I think it was... Anderson Silva v Thales Leites that lasted FOREVER. Granted, it was a terrible fight, but it was Leites' bitch self flat on his back for the entire fight in "guard".

Actually on the Ultimate Fighter Finale fight night the battle between Clay Guida and Diego Sanchez was intense. Lasted all three rounds and was bloody and balls to the wall. Excellent fight. Still think Guida should have won but whatever

He was a total **** during TUF episodes. He definitely didnt win that fight against Matt Hammill, worst decision ever.

I hope Dan shuts him up.

Oh! I misread that the first time.

he was outmatched the entire fight. Diego really pwned him in the stand up, and that head kick...

I had it 29-28 diego.

Mir looked jacked during the weigh in. Hope to see him win. That said...Lesner is a juggernaut and probably will win.

Alvez made weight....kind of a tense weigh in.

Brock Lesnar (c) (265) vs. Frank Mir (c) (245)

Why do they let Brock stay so much heavier than everyone? It's just unfair from a weight class standpoint. All he does is take you down and punch.

Heavyweight is between 206 and 265. So he could fight someone that is 210.

i really want Mir to sweep and leglock Lesnar again. to add insult to injury.

or... for him to win by camel clutch.

or sharpshooter. that'd be epic.

Mir's striking is INSANE, after what he did to Nog.

he wtfpwned Lesnar on the ground once already. and we also saw Randy fend off Brock's ground game with ease, he wasn't able to control much. Mir's BJJ is SICK, and it's not only a lay down and work from my guard approach, as Mir is pretty big himself.

a KO would be... fucking awesome though.

GSP can only lose by flash knockout. if the fight goes on further than the 1st minute, i don't think Alves got much of a chance.

i have a soft spot for Hendo, only man to be LHW and MW champion at the same time.

i have a background in traditional taekwondo, and then olympic style. then i also practiced it full-contact. since i've done kickboxing, barzillian jujitsu, kali escrima filipino, boxing, and recently started judo.

my father is a blackbelt in old ITF TKD. one of my uncles is ex-national selection in judo. the other is a kempo instructor.

my MMA coach is a 6 time national TKD champ, so he comes from a traditional background as well. HIS striking coach is a a very high level boxer with a background in kyokushin karate. his grappling coach is a judo 5th dan, and BJJ blackbelt.

they all agree MMA is honorable, and brilliant. it is the only venue where fighters get to test their skills against fighters of similar physical prowess, with rules allowing them to employ their art to the fullest extent while maintaining safety. it is the most "real" situation in which you can see martial arts application.

if you trained in japan, you'd know cross-training was heavily favored by the likes of Jigoro Kano, Masahiko Kimura and Masutatsu Oyama, to name a few, and all believe in competing against other styles to have a proper idea of what works and what doesn't. the creation of judo as we know it comes from challenge matches Kodokan judoka lost against fusen-ryu jujutsuka, prompting Kano to employ fusen-ryu newaza technique, for example.

so i think you're being a bit myopic in your point of view.

Eh? People actually use moves like the camel clutch and the sharpshooter in MMA?

lol very good. Although the Polish are HOT! So i'd still get the whole family thing going if I were you

From an outsiders perspective, by that i mean i haven't a clue who any of the fighters are.. I find UFC 1000x more entertaining to watch than a boxing match.

Yes it's a little more brutal visually. But as was stated a few times i'd much rather watch it than boxing as boxing to me is really just a terrible terrible sport. Way too much head trauma.

Judo and Karate while a little on the boring side for the spectator (if he doesn't know what's going on) I find quite a 'nice' sport to watch.

Hope you lads enjoy it tonight anyway

nelly
