I saw Sin Nombre in NY. It is not really ABOUT the MS-13, but rather a fictional story about people trying to break free from the kind of hostile environment where gangs like MS-13 inevitably form.
The movie is worth a watch for the beautiful and intense cinematography alone (there's a pivotal scene on top of a moving train that is simply eye-popping), but I think the director spent too much energy on that and too little on the actual script, which leaves the movie with a very predictable and rinsed out plot that squanders a lot of potential.

They're fairly low class. A street gang, but a little more organized than your normal blood, crips type street gang. They along with a few other low class gangs like M-E (Mexican mafia) run quite a bit of contracts for the really dangerous high level Mexican cartels/enforcers like Los Zetas and the Beltran-Levya, Cartel Del Golfo, Sinaloa etc...
Basically they're more dangerous than black gangs, but still fairly low class and beneath the real power coming out of Mexico.

No MS-13 and M-E are low class. Their tactics, equipment, and level of organization are a drop in the bucket compared to the more professional groups especially Los Zetas. I speak from first hand knowledge.
