No.

I'm not saying dressing like a bum, but I really do not give a fuck what someone is wearing if their work is steller.

In fact people that have to present an air of success by how they dress usually are compensating for actual real failures somewhere else. If they are successful they will exude that in the way they talk and act, not how they look.

coming from the guy with no job that means a lot.

Yea coming from the guy who got hired and worked there for 3 years having been interviewed in a sweat shirt and jeans...

Granted the company sucks, but I still got a job.

All I am saying is I wont violate my principals to play the game. If I have the means to do that and get away with it then what does it matter?

What the fuck do you even do anyways Jay?

Sales? Of what?

Sales is all about the look, its a slimy business. More slimy than advertising, unless you sell advertising...

Posted by Ygrene on Jul-30-2009 00:18:

I work cross-functionally with a wide variety of individuals that have high profile jobs within the industry and, I have to say, extraordinary accessories and dress are rare. Fashion wise, you'd have a difficult time telling these guys apart from me and these are individuals that are responsible for billions of dollars and are interfacing directly with the trade. In fact, 99% of our industry is business casual. Our CEO does wear a suit coat but not a tie - at least not at the office. Perhaps it's because we are a Midwest company and an oldish industry but still, business is business.

This comment is laughably crazy. And you're backing it up by admitting the company you worked for sucked! I'm all for the idea that peoples' work should stand on its own merit, but if you want a job with a respectable company, 9 times out of 10 you better show up to your interviews dressed nice and to work the same way if you land the job.

Why even take a chance? I know you can get away with that stuff at like Apple or Microsoft or something, where lots of weirdo tech people work anyway, but shit... if it's between you and some other guy with equal credentials, and he's wearing a nice suit and you're wearing Vans and Mark Ecko sweatshirt, guess who's getting hired?

you aren't far off believe it or not

when i came back from korea i nailed a job as a regional sales manager for insight (IT) but hated the fuck out of that job and moved to this one. When i quit or get fired i'll tell you.

Ygrene I agree with you too, but i didn't exactly post a rolex. If i have to take someone to lunch I want to exude success because my job is not to make decisions, my job is to take their money.

LOL Yea, and where do you think I'd be working?

I'm a fucking nerd lol... and I wouldn't wear Vans or Ecko, I'm not 12!

I'd wear at most a nice pair of slacks and a dress shirt. Anymore than that I'd feel like a tool.

Besides that I don't really plan on working for anyone again anyways. I am smart enough to do my own thing. Getting my act together is where I need to put the effort.

*edit*

And when I do that I hire people, like you, to do the tool jobs.

Posted by Slylee on Jul-30-2009 00:30:

yea a lot of super rich dudes have no style at all. the most retarded outfits ever. and then you notice the rolex or the breitling and see them get into a bentley and you're like, 'oh damn'. lol

Like I said, clothes are required, which is why they're different. But no one needs a watch to look nice or well-dressed. It's a wealth signal, and you even admitted as much when you said one of the reasons to dress a certain way was to look like you made the big bucks.

you don't need that moog you have, there are cheap vst's out there...get rid of it then

The outfit does depend on the position you work... but you can dress nicely even without wearing a suit.

But you've got it backwards my British friend. I am the owner of my company and make hiring decisions. And I don't hire people who look like slackers if they are to be dealing with the public.

What does your company do?

It is a consulting engineering firm. We do building assessments for different types of contamination (chemical/bio) and write protocol on how to remove it in accordance with OSHA standards... redesign mechanical systems inside the buildings if that's the source of the problem... stuff like that.
