when i started learning to create that tyas / discover sound i would use 4 or 5 basses because i had read a post on a forum from bryan kearney i think it was, or someone like that saying they layers 4 or 5 basses on top to get their sound.

That method does work but its not needed at all, infact its worse as it adds all sorts of rubbish to your mix you didnt want.

With good EQ skills and a knowledge of your VST and the notes played through it u only need on instrument to create the bass, and another for the sub bass (although i am sure some people could do that also with just one VST).

Ive been doing this for 3 years now and the one think i picked up is less is more.

100% true, i was one of those people who begged and pleaded a pro artist that i knew to send me files and things of that nature. So one day he does, I look at all the files and think to myself WTF is all this, it didnt help me at all it just confused me further i was not spending days just to figure out what the hell was going on in the project.

Ok sure, I'll give you my project file, you'll steal my synth settings, but then what? You would no idea how to use it in a song anyway. Maybe you haven't realized it yet but amazing sounds are not 2-3 insanely awesome solo sounds, what makes the track sound good is the vast amount of sounds that are mediocre when you solo them.

I used to think "trance bass" was impossible to make on virus, the halcyon on & on/PVD style kind. Then I found out I was right, it's an FM bass. a dx7 preset called "Solid Bass"

Some sounds are so thin in the mix, they are hardly noticeable unless you really pay attention.

Hahah, that preset is older than I am.

I did find a very close approximation in some 3rd-party bank on my old Virus Powercore - unfortunately I can't be more specific, since after 4 years TC still hasn't come out with 64-bit drivers.

More to the point, I don't think anyone's going to deny that certain specific sounds are very difficult to make without a specific piece of hardware (or software). However, that says nothing about the "quality" of either.

i don't know if Arksun-Arisen is an Armada release, but it's on one of the ASOT cds,and Arksun's used his sytrus preset cerberasaw(or something very similar),so you can definitely produce a releasable track using vsts, just keep on trying...
cheers!

You mean you know what they can do in the hands of other producers, then, since you yourself haven't used them. Do you think it's impossible that a big part of the sound difference might be put down to the person using the synth, not the synth itself?

Okay, so link something that (1) you think is professional and (2) you know the producer used hardware to make the bass or mid-bass.

Because if you don't know that the sound is coming from hardware -- as opposed to merely speculating that it might be -- this thread is pretty pointless.

I and countless other producers use FL as their DAW. The DAW makes bugger all difference to the end product. I use Cubase and Reason regularly with other producers and there is no difference in the sound quality, whether it be mid basses or otherwise.

If you are struggling I suggest you try reading up on synthesis, learning one synth really well and how to exploit it to make the sounds you want rather than the sounds it comes with.

Posting flp files isn't going to really help you as different basslines work differently with different bassdrums and percussion.
