Looks like we're getting the full banana cart for this one!

Just came across an interview from last week with Karl regarding tonight's show in Las Vegas. I'll be sure to track down any visual media I can find from the show in advance of Tuesday.

Can we say it�s about friggin� time? Vegas is the band�s first stop on this tour and you haven�t played here in about 10 years. What are your expectations? Our point is to put something unique on. We�re live and the stage show is improvised. It�s a new, bigger production than shows that we�ve brought out in the past. Lots of live projections, cameras, inflatable illuminated structures. The whole crew is also improvising as we go along. We walk out on stage and have absolutely no idea what is going to happen next. Have you ever been hit by one of the giant inflatable props? Constantly, yeah. (Laughs.) It�s not like a rehearsed show where everything has to be slick, in fact, quite the opposite. We�re not the kind of people that enjoy putting on that kind of show, and so we always say to the crew, �Look. If I�m in the way of what you want to do, just push me out of the way.� If I don�t like it, I�ll just push back. Would you consider Darren Price to be a replacement for third member Darren Emerson who left in 2000? Darren Price is with us on stage; there�s way too much to do up there for just two guys. (Laughs.) We tried that and it nearly killed us. In many ways, Darren Price has a lot more responsibility on stage than was needed back in the day. That�s no disrespect to Darren Emerson�he was great�but there�s a lot more going on on stage now� Price has a hell of a lot that he has to take care of. Have groups like Daft Punk or Rabbit in the Moon raised the bar as far as being visually impressive? We start with music and real performance, and build from there. We are interested and passionate about spectacle. We come from two cultures: a dance-based rave culture, which was a totally immersive experience and spectacle that we remember from back in the �80s. And also from an art background, where you want to walk into a room and go, �Wow!� We want that. It�s very, very important to our show. Why play at The Joint versus a nightclub in Vegas? Living so far away from anywhere, unless we know the specific venues, we really have to take advice from people on the ground. This is the first time that we�ve come over with the William Morris Agency, so we�ve gone, �If this is what you think, that�s cool. Let�s come over and see how it works out.� It seems like everyone in electronic music is getting in on the iPhone craze. Tell us a little bit about the Underworld app. A company called iZotope developed quite a few applications for the iPhone. A friend of ours, Dave Spiers, who develops software synthesizers with his company GForce, reprogrammed 12 of our big tunes for the iPhone, [and] one of our partners redesigned the graphics. It�s something we want to try using in the live show as well. It�d be a really funky thing to have all this kit and then pump one tune out of this little socket on an iPhone. What�s next for Underworld as far as albums and life after the tour? At the same time as the iPhone app, we�re rereleasing all [of] our back catalogue as downloads on iTunes. On the 7th of August, we�re scheduling the first ever live gig broadcast to iPhones with Apple� I just came back from Australia where I did three improvised shows in a day at the Sydney Opera House with Brian Eno. I know that�s being mixed for a series of albums and DVDs. Primarily, Rick and I are focused on writing, finishing the recording for new releases next year and then coming back with a major tour next year.

Looks like you iPhone'rs are getting a little something special tomorrow night. I'll be sure to hijack someone's at Beerfest.

the creative passion these guys have for spectacle and senses is just awesome. I can't wait to see them live! Gonna be in-SANE. I'd be down for some tailgate prior too to get the hype going pre-show!

Admittedly, as much as I absolutely love Underworld, I was having a hard time being excited for this. The excitement FINALLY kicked into high-gear. I want it to be Tuesday, NOW.

Well, I'm well ready for tailgeting. Who's driving? (we'll need a vehicle/tailgate & soundsystem right?) Who owns a hibachi? I'll man the grill. Bring your own grilling items. Yes?

As for pre-game there are pubs to hit (i.e. Scotland Yard aka the standard TA pre-meet) and perhaps other places for pre-partying should the residents be in agreement.

What is the consensus?

What of sheep in drag and horseback automatic?

I haven't checked out videos from recent performances (I find they just ramp up my expectations for something bigger and better), but I hope we get to see some of the visuals. That's a HUGE part of the show for me.

Bien sur.

It looks like there are already more than enough willing to start the gong show early. Currently Tuesday's forecast is looking good.

First thing we need to decide is what time do we want to kick things off. Tix say doors @ 8:30 so arriving at 9ish or so makes sense for an early arrival. Therefore a 6pm start time makes sense to me if we're including eating in this whole thing, and if there are those willing to tailgate it then perhaps we congregate somewhere for food & then migrate to the parking lot of whoever wants to be the "host vehicle".

Alternatively, if we just go full bore with the tailgating & a hibachi or small bbq, that changes everything. In that case, then it's just a question of 1) who owns a hibachi? (I don't dammit) & 2) what time do you want to start grilling?

I'm down with either plan. But if we could pull off the hibachi thing, well that would just add to everything as then we could dine while controlling the tunes and enjoying our "apple juice" in the fine weather the entire time leading up to the show. So I guess my preference is the tailgate option.

Anyone own a hibachi? Willing to be the "host vehicle"?

Let's figure this one out.

Review of last night's gig in Las Vegas from Spin

Thick clouds of dry ice, sudden flashes of light, concussive, knock-you-on-your-heels rhythms created the deliriously disorienting effect of a disco war zone. The man at the center of it all, Underworld's de facto frontman and singer Karl Hyde, certainly carried himself like the most fab of field sergeants, donning a sparkly sport coat that could have been fashioned from an imploded disco ball and dancing himself dizzy. Seriously, dude's pelvis earned overtime pay on this night. "I want to give you everything, I want to give you energy," Hyde sang appropriately enough on dance-floor heart attack "Cowgirl," a triple shot of adrenaline and cresting synth lines that was an early highlight of the group's feverish two-hour set. Live, Underworld is a wholly different beast than the techno animal, unfurling extended romps through their back catalog that make the album versions feel like Cliff's Notes. Their repertoire is as malleable as wet taffy, perpetually taking on new shapes, like cloud patterns in the face of gale-force winds, and they stretch most every tune far past its initial recording time. With Hyde's hypnotic vocals and mantra-like lyrics buttressed by a throbbing harmonic drone, Underworld employ repetition as a battering ram to weaken your defenses before storming the gates with arms-in-the-air melodies. Combined with retina-blasting visuals projected on a series of inflatable tubes at the back of the stage, it created an equally entrancing and jarring effect. Surveying the last decade-and-a-half of their career, from the whiplash beats of "Dirty Epic" off of 1993's inventive Dubnobasswithmyheadman to the apocalyptic bass bombs that comprised a show-ending "Boy, Boy, Boy" from their most recent disc, 2007's Oblivion With Bells, the group seldom seemed to come up for air. The fan favorites came fast and furious -- songs like "Two Months Off," "King of Snakes," and "Push Upstairs" were belted out with such force, it was as if they were fired from a cannon. Before long, the room began to reek of B.O. and spilt beer, but Hyde didn't mind. "This is a great return to America," Hyde beamed. The crowd responded in kind, going after the giant white balloons hurled from the stage during their best-known jam, "Born Slippy," like kids chasing bubbles. "This is my beautiful dream," Hyde had sung earlier, at the onset of the show, refusing to be awakened, if only for a night.

It would appear very likely that this will resemble the madness that was the show in 1998!

If things go the ordinary pre-drink route, then I highly support and recommend the Scotland Yard location. It's close to KH (short walking distance), and its a great pre-meet location... we've done more than a few gatherings there before.

I'm not sure why you'd need to email. I think that might just be a marketing thing. The link is available on the website.
