i love nice, easy going people who are rarely mad or rude. that's exactly how my boyfriend is.

simplicity is a breath of fresh air for me. all you overly complex grouchy people do it on purpose i think...trying to give yourselves more meaning/character or something

I see what you did, there...

lol

it's true. i can't fuckin stand people like that in person and rarely waste my time trying to get to know the "REAL" them. waste of my time. i like "what you see is what you get". life is too short for me to spend time getting to know people who don't want people to get to know them because they want to be mysterious lol

You must hate "House, MD".

My guess is that this is simply how people adjust to the pecking order of this community, where you either use the same nastiness to assert yourself, or get trampled.

Yes, I know. I was half following on from PKC's comment and half making a comment about how being a dickhead once in a while is fine. I think the COR is an ideal place to vent, because there's the combination of Internet anonymity, an accepting culture of nastiness and a semi-serious approach to the whole thing.

And some nice people have got on fine here. Lira is an obvious example.

If you believe this, why did you give me the whole "You don't even know me" speech after I called you an idiot that time?

Do you really think people who are bitter or sarcastic on the net would be that way all the time in person? Better I act this way in here where it does not have much consequence. ;-)

no actually i like that show a lot. but if it were a real life experience for me (doing an internship for someone like that) i would just bite the bullet and get through it and move on. i wouldn't try to get to know that guy on a personal level at all. lol

So what you see is not what you get, when it makes you look stupid?

Posted by WittyHandle on Sep-29-2009 15:25:

I went through a really nasty phase myself, it just happened to be when I was partying a lot. My friends and I would joke around and start lobbing nasty shots at each other, all in good fun, and it was fine for a while... it was really fun actually. Then it started to get out of control. What we all came to realize was that when you put yourself in that mindset for a while, it becomes who you actually are. When I saw that in myself, I just said this isn't who I want to be, and I cut it way back.
I still like to bust out a depraved comment once in a while, it's fun. But I try to do it around people that I know can take it in the right way. I can't stand people who are fake and happy all the time either, but that doesn't mean that you can't be genuine and positive most of the time. The two aren't mutually exclusive at all. Being positive isn't a sign of weakness, it takes a lot of strength to hold to it when there's so much fighting against it. The truly weak thing to do is just let the nastiness fly as a gut reaction.
My 2 cents.

no i think it has more to do with people generally not liking me and and seeing what they want to see and misconstruing my posts on a regular basis to use it against me.

i just think i'm more easily digestible in person that's all. doesn't mean i'm a completely differnt person though.

bingo. i have always said this. people always mistake kindness for weakness, but really...the easy/weakling way out is being a dick/emo.

The nastiest I ever saw cor was one afternoon 'bout 3-4 years ago, when a handful of TAs, including some of my favorite 'nice' users, all hated on Peter (igottaknow). I think there was like a huge thread packed with ugliness and viciousness. It made my monitor cry and my eyes bleed. So its not really a 'recent' phenom.

I know what you mean. Sometimes there's good reason to be angry or stressed out about certain things but some people put on an act.
I guilty of being an ass at times, but honestly I get pretty stressed out sometimes and I take it out on other people, but if I'm out of line I'll always apologise and do my best to keep peace.
It's one thing to be verbally abusive but violence worse.
