fuck jams = fuck yeah!

Posted by Omega_Blue on Oct-06-2009 22:22:

this mix is so fucking sick

now that there's a t/l i can pick out the tracks that are really standing out to me while giving it another re-listen

the swayzak and tensake tracks are fucking ace!

Posted by bas on Oct-06-2009 22:29:

I really liked that Swayzak one too. Tensnake has been absolute fire over the past year or so, I love dat guy.

yeah, i mean when i think swayzak i usually think the richard davis mixes of "another way" and "smile & recieve" so it was nice to hear something a bit deeper from them. and i'm pretty sure a friend recommended tensake? tensnake? to me but i never got around to checking em out til this mix.

edit: Shirley Lites Heat you Up (Melt you Down) is a sick track too

and for those of you saying that the mixes were too abrupt- have you ever tried mixing disco records before? it's not like house or most EDM with ~1:00 of intro and outro tailored to the dj's mixing needs. most of those tracks don't even have an opportunity to properly mix out of, so jj does the best he can with what he's got. sounds great to me.

Because you're purporting that this is something new when it isn't. Jamie Jones has been into funk and disco since before he started DJing. He's not a "tech house guy" just because he made "Amazon", he's always played a wide range of music and this is just a side of him that many are obviously not familiar with if his productions are all they know about him.

Not to mention that DJs from Seth Troxler to Derek Plaslaiko to Three (or any other so called "tech" characters) have been playing songs like these in sets for years.

You can't classify all DJs with simple genre tags, because the guys who are really good defy them.

I think it's really great for DJs to use the essential mix to expose another side of them, as opposed to say, Steve Lawler playing 2 hours of exactly what he plays at every single fuckin gig.

Posted by DJ_Lord on Oct-07-2009 02:18:

i think that the track selection was great. however, like i said, his mixing wasn't precise and i personally didn't like it.

What wasn't "precise" about it? From some of the comments in this set I was expecting this to be some jankily mixed together piece of shit, which makes absolutely no sense given the source. You guys are nuts.

Posted by Clovis on Oct-07-2009 08:31:

God forbid someone actually use turntables to mix a set instead of Ableton and a mouse.

Posted by enydo on Oct-07-2009 11:52:

I actually thoroughly enjoyed this, put me in a great mood.

purporting lol.

i have the luxury of seeing dj three spin almost monthly for years at a club here. he is still techy minimal with deep and funky house over here. no disco sounding stuff in his sets. no bongos or bass guitars or violins in his sets.

i love how when nu disco was first talked about here it got bashed and hated on, but now that the techy deep heros are playing it its ok. its always like that, a new sound takes a while to get accepted as cool and relevant.

and this set really sucks. ever listen to the vocals in some of these tunes? cheesier than david guetta. and then he pitched a 112bpm (its somewhere around there, its a slow burner) tensnake tune up to like 126bpm. killed any groove the track originally had. sounds like crap. sounds like someone playing funky house in ableton and then accidently playing a slow disco tune and forcing it in that tempo.

what r u implying? that because he uses turntables the transitions can be weak?

bas: i just didn't like his transitions in the beginning of the set.

for all i know he could be doing that on purpose, i don't know.

you guys sound like you will take whatever jj puts out. tomorrow he could wake up and play merengue and salsa in his sets and u will be jumping in one leg or doing the chicken dance in ur room, wtf. seriously.

Posted by woscar on Oct-07-2009 17:21:

The mixing is solid, man. He did a quick fade at the first transition and at the last one, that's it. The rest is done pretty fucking well.

stevesto: your problem is that you seem to be under the impression that Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, and the rest you call "techy deep heroes" started playing stuff like this in their sets this weekend. You even stated yourself that you're not familiar with Jamie Jones' sets, so you should stop discussing things you obviously have no idea about.

i dont have any problem. your problem is you are the elitist asshole from guatemala with obvious insecurities that throws insults like every other post. but i digress. i never stated im not familiar with jamie jones sets. to be exact the last set i heard from him was like march, culprit session or something, and there was nothing remotely disco sounding then. so i specifically asked when he started playing the disco type stuff, with no answer, yet.

Sure he beat matches fine but can you honestly tell me you don't find lots of the transitions jarring they are so quick? Like DJ_lord said maybe that's his aim but I found it damn distracting.

Nobody you're talking about just got into this today is the point here. Harvey's been carrying the disco flag for over 20 years. Jamie's been collecting records like these for ages. Just because a couple DJs known for tech are playing some now, doesn't mean they havn't before or that its new to them. We've done two hot natured parties this year in Miami and Detroit where this was the main attraction, with guys like Damian Lazarus, Lee Curtiss and Jamie all throwing down sets like these.

What I am trying to explain to you, stevesto, is that the world does not revolve around what YOU have heard or seen. Just because this is the first time you've ever heard Jamie Jones play some disco tracks does not mean this is the first time he has bought or played any. He used the essential mix to showcase a different side of himself, plain and simple.

As for Three, again, just because he brings it darker at Snatch does not mean he's never played a disco track in his entire fucking career. He played out here for about three hours under 120bpm dropping Todd Terje and the like, so just because YOU have never heard it from him doesn't make it the rule.

I finally was able to listen to this yesterday evening and it was ok, parts I really liked, and some other tracks I was not into, as you say some of the vocals are a bit much. But Jamie is a great DJ and overall I think he achieved what he wanted here and it's a welcome change, as I said earlier, from DJs playing exactly what you expect of them, ALL THE TIME.

not to beat a dead horse, but i couldn't have said it better myself. yes the first transition is more of a cut than a smooth 3 minute blend but again that's just due to the nature of the individual track; the way he did it was the only logical way to mix the two together apart from trying to loop a 4-8 beat percussive phrase of the outgoing track in ableton or somethin and mixing that with the incoming, but as clovis said he uses TT's which makes that physically impossible

pretty much you guys need to stop judging a mix by its first transition and give it another shot. i promise that any purveyor or fan of EDM can at least appreciate most of the music that he spins in this set, and some of his transitions are pretty brilliant imo.

Posted by DJ_Lord on Oct-07-2009 22:12:

nah, some transitions are forced.

i didn't know he only used TT's. i guess that proves why he can only do so much. but still, you can always argue with the famous saying "it's not the car, it's the driver..."

in any case, i really loved the music he put down and in regards to the vocals being too cheesy, well, disco is disco baby. that's how my mother used to roll!

Posted by lenazi on Oct-07-2009 22:34:

it was not my favourite em, but it was good. The mixing was a bit odd at certain times, but hardly as bad as you guys make it seem.

anyone know if this was a studio set or a live set?

Posted by Nostalgic on Oct-07-2009 23:40:

Jim Jones?

cool. well i never said this set was the first time jamie played it, i even specifically asked when he started playing nu disco because im willing to know. i can only go by listening to recorded sets and for three wow thats weird, had no idea. there is no stupidity in that. i cherish the porno soundtrack and fear it being ringed dry like every other flavor that pops into techno so sue me.

why is that? never understood why you guys care so much about smooth transitions. its mainly the song selection (not cheesy), the flow (what layers well over another and whats a good time for a change up), and pitching the tunes to a good balance for grooviness. in my little world anyway.

Posted by wotyzoid on Oct-08-2009 02:31:

People that pick on the technicalities of DJ'ing are idiots IMHO. Who the fuck cares.
