-- TTC fares going up big time... AGAIN!

Honestly, it should have been $3.00 a while ago...it's way easier to have to have an even $3.00 than 3 quarters. And I'm sure they could use the extra .25 more than I can...However, that being said, part of me objects because any organization that pays their bitchy fuckface booth collectors 100k+/year needs some serious retooling

Posted by DigiNut on Nov-05-2009 23:48:

How else are they supposed to pay those $120,000/yr booth collectors? Sheesh, have a heart people, if they didn't raise fares then they might have to lay off 5 or 10 of those highly-trained employees or cut their wages! Then they'd be making less than an accountant or a civil engineer! How are they supposed to feed their families then?

No, that's exactly his point.

He wants to see more viable options, but instead, we're left with Tweedle Dum, and Tweedle Dee is nowhere to be found.

It's all in the name of equality really. Everyone, regardless of their skill-set, ability or motivation to actually do something with their life, should be able to afford a nice house, a big-screen LCD TV, and a brand new Lexus.

Where's your heart Digi?

my comparison was due to the fact that with all that service its still cheaper than present day toronto fares. And prices are going up!!

Toronto doesnt need the NYC system but we definitely need at least 5 more lines AT MINIMUM

actually i think the canadian socialist dream is for everyone to live in condos with grass roofs, wait half an hour for a bus, and ride their bikes in a -20C blizzard while eating vegan food from a fair trade wooden bowl made in india.

Exactly. All these taxes and high fares are in serious violation of my inalienable right to those things as guaranteed by international law, which is why I've issued written demands for a $250,000 per year equalization payment to level the playing field and will be suing the city if they refuse.

At least when you pay for your car you own something and its at your disposal at all times.

Screw transit.

does NYC really have a tax though? is that how they are subsidizing their transit? i see something about taxation there and how it ties back to their Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Authority / MTA... and 9 toll bridges / tunnels... so is that a conveniently left-out matter here or is it bullshit? cause you know... it might factor into why their transit passes / fares are cheaper right?

just sayin'

Well even if they do have metropolitan taxes and fares on their tunnels/bridges, you too have left out important facts.

Their income tax levels are much more genereous than anything Ontario or Canada has to offer, plus their gas is less taxed.... so yeah.

just sayin'

how much more generous are their income tax levels to make it worth levying an additional tax at the municipal level?

except that this was all there before the tolls and before the tax. And the tolls pay for all the large bridges and tunnels that dont exist in toronto. Also the state sales tax is 5% in new york meaning that NYC pays 9.5% in total compared to what ontarians already pay 13% without the city tax.

I actually supported millers idea for 1 cent of the GST but my problem with him was that as a socialist mayor, hed most likely squander it on bullshit. Like say... new streetcars.

Posted by daves on Nov-06-2009 14:08:

okay i see what you mean if NYC municipal + state sales tax still does not add up to our provincial+federal sales tax... i guess a municipal level sales tax for us would then be a triple-billing nightmare (discussion in your other thread)

but all politics aside for a minute jayx1 (work with me here), what is screwing us over so badly with our transit system... it appears we pay out exorbitant wages to the ATU employees... the city often complains it does not get enough assistance from provincial/federal funding, is that a fair argument? i could possibly also believe we do not need to spend that 1-billion on streetcars... but we've had this problem before now as well haven't we?

Okay... so i'm looking at their 2006 financial statement (all i could find on short-notice googling) and it's kinda funny looking at expenses versus revenue... wages/salaries/benefits alone for that year came up $30 million above the total revenue... wow - so it looks like the wages are one of the biggest problems indeed!

Posted by Jayx1 on Nov-06-2009 15:02:

Exactly... the problem is the bloody union that prevents cost saving progress. We need automated fare collection like most of the world has. We should also be paying more of a fair wage to drivers (as in a lower wage). At the very very least those wages should be frozen indefinitely. Also expansion should be a public/private initiative. Im not against using more advertising ideas for the system either.

But sadly no one here has the initiative or the gonads to do these things which is why we keep getting stuck with the tab.

As for funding from the province/federal gov. Im convinced that one reason they dont is because the upper governments are well aware that the city will just end up wasting it.

New streetcars? Really? We should be retiring them as they wear out. They are actually a detriment to the city more than anything.

not to nitpick, but the NYC sales tax totals up to 8.875% (it was 8.375% before August), that's like having the PST/HST alone over here!

I too love change. Anytime I see even a penny on the ground I'll pick it up. So many people get rid of their change...and I welcome it with open arms! I have a big piggy bank with all my pennies, nickels and dimes. I can't wait until it's full so I can roll it! It's going to be so much fun!!!
