Well being quite a recent convert from cracker-trance to deeper styles of dance music, I was sort of expecting him to play something along the lines of Transitions 4. I wasn't expecting him to bust out any vintage prog or anything, but something in the vain of the aformentioned album. All I got was a night of Dubfire and Paul Ritch.

Good lord... that comment about Durand.

"I am sorry!! Do you think the same that you wrote here also about Tiesto?? if no..then did you ever think of why he offered to support new talents??..where he told also about Richard Durand!!!!!!!! you think Tiesto noticed this artist just for fun?? Tiesto!! who was for three times the DJ number One in the world!! Who knows the best what real music is!!NOWAY!!! He would never do this!! He noticed Richard as a TALENT!!!!!
and the music is a subjective thing!! and I know for sure that the biggest part of party crowd likes Richard's sets and his performances!!!)) and I'm one of them!!!! =P"

jesus...

Anyways:

Paul van Dyk
Richard Durand
David Pearce
Sharam
Armin
Tiesto

All obvious, I know, but still.

i thought sasha was really great a couple years ago in that period when he released a bunch of singles on emfire - his dj sets from that time are good as well. i agree that he's not quite on the same level now, although i did enjoy invol2ver a lot

nothing wrong with it, i just think he should have called it something else as it paled so much in comparison to the original, which was a defining compilation at the time.

i get it though, marketing is important.

Danny Howells : every time i have been to a Howells night i always get a dose of variety. Not to mention that he plays for 13 hours straight and pulls it off like not many could.

Lee Burridge: He has disappointed me once. Other than that i have raved hard to him many times. His music is not hard to get and pretty much in your face, but he knows how to kick a party into gear.

Joris Voorn: I'm not a fan of his productions, but he is the guy that uses traktor the best. Unbelievable mixing and energy. Even if he looks like a fag, his piknic electronique set was one of my highlights for this year.

Brendan Moeller aka Beat Pharmacy. : blew my mind away at mutek. This guy does the deep well.

Dan Bell: A legend who just plays great music, early mnmil from the 90's mixed with stuff from today.

A Guy Called Gerald : Another legend for me. He does mostly a live PA now using 2 laptops and reason, but the guy plays anything from rip your face of techno, jungle, house and so on. The guy has forgotten more about dance music than most know.

Robert Hood: no need to explain this one. he will rip off your face.

Loco Dice: I just love the different kind of stuff he puts together. His background as a hip hop dj shines through and you get a taste of the applied into electronic music that makes for great dancing.

Derrick Carter: When i want to go out and get funked to great house music, he usually is the guy that delivers for me.

Ricardo Villalobos.: I know what a lot of you will say, but i have seen him multiple times in different countries and he is simply the jesus of dance music. I don't really like his productions, but he will play obscure tracks from the 90's that sound like they were made yesterday within the context of his sets. Next level dj...you never know what you are going to get..(well if it is a big festival he will play one hour of music that the youtube kiddes want to hear, but if you stick around he will blow you away) The guy has a deep bag.

edit: Laurent Garnier: he doesn't mix the best, but man his sets have range. He plays everything and is the quintessential party time dj imo.

You're lucky to have so many good acts play in your town. Fuck, all we ever get is Above and Beyond, Tiesto, Gareth Emery, Guru Josh Project, Above and Beyond again, and PvD, Armin, and Eddie Halliwell. Lather, rinse, repeat.

They do book some good acts every now and then, and this year the only ones were Matthias Tanzmann and Satoshi Tomiie. I couldn't make it to Satoshi, but I did go see Tanzmann and he killed it.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Nov-06-2009 02:21:

it used to be much better, and i don't get out that much anymore compared to before. The montreal scene was really good in the late 90's and early 00's due to the crazy unprofitable bookings of aria nightclub.

They brought everyone that no one else in north america would touch, and unitl they went belly up it was the best afterhours joint on the continent. Stereo (google it) just re opened, and although they have booked mostly shit, i am looking forward to audiofly (yuck), clive henry, sis (yeessssss) and maher daniel (a good buddy..look im name dropping like clovis). The sound system is among the best in the world and purely analog.

Ricardo Villalobos only comes to mtl vs the rest of north america.

having piknic electronique really helps as the concept is the best for anyone. You have kids and grandparents that show up it is crazy.

http://piknicelectronik.com/

mutek is also great.

i'm drunk....our best clubs only open at 2am and serve no booze.

watwat

/old

Posted by Schadenfreude on Nov-06-2009 02:22:

satoshii used to be a stereo resident.

he isn't a very good dj technically imo.

also i did not always see these acts in my own town

http://www.igloofest.ca/

so far guy gerber and luciano are confirmed. matt tolfrey as well, it is an outdoor party at - 25 degrees celsius.

also your homie desyn lives here

Posted by woscar on Nov-06-2009 02:26:

Yeah, I've heard about Stereo. Quite legendary.

I love the concept of Piknic Electronik, and I have plans about doing something like that over here. I just have to figure out how to get the cash to start.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Nov-06-2009 02:31:

there is nothing quite like a party in the sun that does not mess up your work week, not to mention it costs only 10$ and you can bring your own hooch and food

sunday school in nyc is a direct imitation

Atlanta has gone to the shitter over the past couple months or so.

We had this really great, small, venue next to the Fox theater with promoters that would consistently bring in talent like Pheek and Konrad Black (to name but a few). The shows were great, 100 - 200 people just rocking out in the dark attic of a bar. Sadly one of the owners decided it was time to move on, and the place is now a sports bar.

After that happened we have barely anyone coming through other than the major trance / bullshit jocks in the worst club in town. I can't see the light. The one thing I am majorly looking forward to is WMC falling on my spring break next year, as I have yet to experience conference.

Posted by Armitage on Nov-06-2009 02:44:

I've been wanting to see Pheek for a while now, I've loved some of the stuff on Archipel. Bit disappointing he hasn't made it out to vancouver especially considering he's canadian.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Nov-06-2009 02:47:

pheek is really good, it is not easy to get music though and therfore not as accessible to the masses. He is probably our best local talent after guillaume coutu dumont. His gf stefny winter is pretty awesome as well. She has been releasing some great stuff on great labels.

woscar, piknic works because it has government funding.

i could be wrong, but i think pheek finally made the move to berlin, like pretty much anyone else of note that comes from here

Posted by Seppuku on Nov-06-2009 02:55:

For real, fuck Atlanta. We got so much good shit earlier this year, I guess we just got spoiled. The promoters do what they can and we have some good locals, but at the end of the day we just don't have an adequate venue like Bazzaar was to support these type of shows. I want to move.

Posted by enydo on Nov-06-2009 02:59:

I gotta finish school, then see what I'd like to do. I dunno, maybe there'll be some type of revival, we just don't have the venues to support it.

Posted by woscar on Nov-06-2009 03:10:

Your government rocks Jay.

I would not be able to get government funding for anything like that but I could get corporate sponsorship, which is what I'm working on. I know someone that works in the company that distributes Grey Goose, Absolut, Bacardi, and a lot of other liquors. I already contacted some DJs to see how much it would cost and it's not a lot so it might be viable. We'll see what happens.

Surprisingly enough, I think from my very limited experience that hiring DJs is the easiest part of running a festival/club night. The hardest bit is getting a crowd to show up, organising noise permits, venue hire, insurance, security, et cetera.

Posted by Schadenfreude on Nov-06-2009 03:15:

when i mean government funding, i mean that they give them the venue for free knowing that it promotes tourism.

why else do you think we can see villalobos vs zip for 10$?

how much would that cost in new york if he decided that the usa did not suck?

i went to see tiesto when he came to town because of the free booze and food, and you know what? it sucked but was better than metallica was epically sucked;p

Posted by Light The Fuse on Nov-06-2009 03:19:

metallica in concert would own tiesto

Posted by Schadenfreude on Nov-06-2009 03:29:

i saw them a few weeks back and it was a show that was only surpassed in suck by kings of leon.

time to retire, because they really are horrible now.

tiesto was not good, just better...i say this as the biggest tiesto hater on this forum too.

Posted by woscar on Nov-06-2009 03:32:

LOL.

Some punter related to Universal Music mentioned Guatemala is part of the South American tour and everyone is jizzing in their pants. "I'm a bigger fan than all of you" dick-measuring contest included.

Yes, if by "Metallica" you mean Metallica as they were twenty or twenty-five years ago.
