building a track up or creating tension comes down to either going with a set format or formats as each track is made in different ways.
a good combo of mapping ahead and spending time working on making the not so importent stuff will help in the long run.
i will also say take time to watch some good techno producrs thier ways of building things up are worty thinking about.
-A Long sustained note
-Repeating the beginning portion of a melody
-Remove elements
-V7, V7!
-7th chords
-Chromatic Chords
-diatonic notes
-Increase BPM
-augmentation: doubling rhythm speed
-Add elements at faster intervals, example: add new elements every 4 bars instead of the typical 8
-Add noise
-Drop the kick
-Soloing one percussion hit on a downbeat, example: muting everything expect for the last clap in an 8 bar section
-Augmenting things that people don't expect to hear based on genre, example: breakbeat kickdrum pattern in a trance tune
- Drum rolls
-White noise sweeps
-Increase overall volume
-Instrument with significantly varying volume
-Make the breakdown 8 bars
-Increase or decrease note length in a melody
-non-chordal tones on strong beats that resolve to chordal tones
-Long reverb on a single percussion hit
-Automating distortion
-Shortening or lengthening percussion notes
-Adding or subtracting elements not exactly at the beginning of the bar
-Ending the melody on something other than the tonic
-Start the melody on something other than the tonic
-Silencing half of a drum rhythm
-Pan everything that should be mono to one side or the other
-Lower the lead hook in volume and slap a shitload of reverb on it, and never bring it back up again
-Disable reverb on a lead temporarily, work well if you solo it to make it stand out
-Shuffle
-automate swing to "slow" down a song
-Play bass notes to make it sound like a lead temporarily
-play a scale upward for 2 or more octaves
-use "cheap" DJ effects on your entire mix like temporarily low cutting
-Ping pong a pluck back and forth from left to right
-Add pitch automation on longer sustained notes
-Temporarily detune an entire melody or single note
-Use something else besides the major scale
-Switch keys in the middle of a song
-Put only one clap in a one bar loop
-Use eq to bandpass a lead temporarily
-Make a rhythm or lead rising in volume for a long duration of time
-turn the side chained compressor on and off
Repeat a melody with a lower cutoff or volume
-Repeat a melody with a completely different patch
-Morph a plucky lead saw into a soft pad
-32 bar piano solo
-Make a trance tune with a melody longer than 4 bars
-Repeat a melody with a different chords for pads
-automate volume LFO on a long sustained element
-automate two LFO's to peak at completely opposite times
-Make a song with varying RMS values
-Make a trance tune and a hip-hop tune, and then mash them together
-Take elements that aren't in the genre you are producing, and shove them in
-Only play each melody one time
-Vary what the groove of the track is driven by(it could be percussion, bass, or leads)
-Drop the bass in a track, and never bring it back until the very end
-Loop one bar for 16 measures, then make changes every 4 bars for 16 bars
-Drive your song with only percussion made out of FX
-Thicken up leads with noise or extra layers
-On the other hand...subtract layers for a breakdown
-chain two breakdowns in a row
-make the breakdown the end of the song
-start the song from the breakdown
-temporarily disable autotune
-don't use autotune at all
-use autotune for only the chorus
-detune notes for a human feel
-Repeat shit
-Do the opposite of what everyone expects you to do
pretty much covers it.
Actually there's one thing that I think really works well that I haven't seen mentioned yet -- turning an 8 bar phrase into a 10 bar phrase and using the extra 2 bars as a transition into a new phrase. Usually throws the listener off and gives the next phrase a lot more impact, IMO.
