I don't surround myself with people that are so closed-minded such as the types you are referring to, but I too hate those types. Too damn clueless to so much.

exactly. you're not. and until you have to fight for equal rights the way we did (and pretty much still do), you won't get it

Posted by Fledz on Nov-21-2009 15:31:

I'm all for women having equal rights, in fact I'm one of the biggest supporters of equality. What I don't like nor appreciate is women that demand the same amount of pay for less work with the excuse that the female body isn't designed for as much physical labour. Well, that form of feminist bullshit won't cut it. If you demand equality, then do the same amount of work and don't bitch and moan about it.

God damn I hate feminists. False racism activists too. Religious zealots. Over the top atheists. Greeny, hippy wankers. Probably more too.
All the type of people that give everyone else a bad name.

As for Oprah, I like her. I don't like the fact that she has so much power over so many people but at least she tries to do good things most of the time.

Posted by astroboy on Nov-21-2009 15:36:

Oprah's ok.. for a fat black woman she's really kicked some goals. I think her audience pisses me off much more than she ever could. Stupid squeal-like-a-harpy-at-the-drop-of-a-hat broads.

Posted by Slylee on Nov-21-2009 15:37:

i'm not an extreme feminist either and they annoy me.

i get particularly annoyed when some woman tries to push the limits and join an all male country club or something just to prove a point and gets on the local news about it. it's like let the men have their own little club who gives a shit lol go start your own or something.

and yea oprah is pretty f'n cool. she gives her entire audience a brand new car sometimes. i think that's cool as shit. despite being worth a couple of billion dollars, she seems pretty damn grounded and generous to me and that's highly admirable to me.

I guess really, this is what I hate. Her audience is full of idiots. People that are clueless as to what they are buying into.

oh come now you're not REALLY trying to say you've fought for equal rights now are you?

if oprah was a real feminist her show wouldn't be such a reinforcement of traditional gender divides. conservatism and feminism (imo) do not mix particularly well.

you have no fucking clue what you are talking about. you might as well be trying to explain to a black person what it's like to be black. it is a struggle every day in this world still for women. just like it is for blacks no matter how long ago THAT shit was. you guys are still constantly trying to remind us that we're dumber, weaker, and NOT equal to men whether it's by a joke, or a sarcastic comment, or for real by just straight up being a chauvanist pig in the locker room with your buddies lol

at least admit that you really don't know what it's like to be a female in a very male dominated world. don't dismiss it like it's nothing or nonexistant. you're dead wrong.

Posted by Fledz on Nov-22-2009 00:37:

It's still a struggle for all women?
It's still a struggle for all black people?

Bullshit. Absolute and utter bullshit. Get off your victim bandwagon, it's not doing you any favours.

yea ok whatever you say. you're a young white male. LOL easy for you to say. so fucking ignorant.

whoa down there slylee! gee, so easy to anger despite my politeness. i take issue with you saying i dont know what im talking about, i can PM you a copy of my dissertation if you really want. i don't know too many boys that are as well-versed in the subject as moi.

that said, i didn't say that inequities don't or haven't existed. i didn't say that as a woman you haven't been subjected to the paternalistic nature of modern society.

what i said was you can't seriously be telling me you've personally fought for equal rights. and i know this because you weren't born when the war was fought. being a woman every day doesn't count.

i agree with you (and disagree with fledz) that inequities and the gender divide continue. of course, that gender divide doesn't just work against women, but i do agree that often they get the short end of the stick.

however, i DO take exception to any generation X or beyond female claiming THEY have been part of the fight for gender equality. the achievements since the Second Wave have been rather minor in comparison to what came before, which is why i question your original comment "until you have to fight for equal rights the way we did" because you didn't fight for anything.

believe it or not, im quite the feminist

Posted by Slylee on Nov-22-2009 00:53:

sorry i guess that post came off as bitchy. i wasn't really that angry, just didn't feel like using any smilies or whatever

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Nov-22-2009 00:55:

no worries. let's go and protest the right for women to have beards!

Posted by Slylee on Nov-22-2009 00:56:

i know i haven't literally "faught for equal rights", but i'm just trying to explain that it's still a fight every day...just in a different sense of the word. a "struggle".

and you know i don't fully blame men for this at all. i also blame stupid whore strippers and prostitutes and gold digging wives who bring the entire female population 10 steps BACKWARDS after everything we've faught for.

Unless you're a Black woman yourself, I'm afraid you can't be so sure

But I don't disagree that there is a gender divide

What I disagree is the victim attitude that some people jump straight into as if that's going to do them any favours. It won't.

I can agree with this, but...

Do you personally even want to do anything that would have been impossible or very difficult for you to do before the second ('50 - '60s) wave of feminism came about? I mean, you pretty much live off of your boyfriend's salary, no?

and that's an excellent tangential point. traditional feminism, the stuff most often wanked on about by people like us, is such a white, middle-class brand of feminism that its really quite difficult to extend that understanding and apply it to the experiences of black women, whether in the US (or other western countries) or elsewhere.

white women, in western nations, have had it the best in the last 100 years or so. a little bit of context doesn't go astray imo.

i think men take for granted that historically we have owned and run everything, which to my mind has influenced the evolution of public society. that's a no brainer.

how much is still residual in an age of (attempted) legislative equality is up for debate. how much difference it would've made in the shaping of the family or the public sphere is also another debate.

sexist jokes, especially when combining race or rape, are still the funniest jokes going round though. and its because men are funnier than women. if women were as funny as men, there'd be more good jokes about men.

that's not our fault. blame yourselves sisters, blame yourselves.

yeah, sorry. i completely missed the "all" in your post.

quite clearly, it isn't a struggle for "all" anyone anymore. and i think other divides, like rich and poor, are a far more important area of concern than the execs who hire pretty secretaries.

women are the baby carriers. that was never going to work to their advantage in terms of the distribution of power.

unlucky!

Not to jump down your throat like the rest of them, but if that were the case, why are actual Africans not having the same issues once migrating to the US? Chimera is a great example. There were also 2 Nigerian ladies in LA that were on the train that crashed last year. Both were quite educated. How is it that not being a black person, makes you wholly unqualified to make the call? Yes, there are things, such as profiling, etc that we are unable to fully understand. But telling blacks and Mexicans and the female gender to get off the victim mentality, is not unfounded.

Posted by Fledz on Nov-22-2009 02:33:

Yea I think it's important to clarify that those who don't adopt the victim mentality but rather work through the problems are the ones I have the most respect for. The most brave and honest women, black people, whatever that I have come across are the ones that didn't just retreat into the victim mentality. Rather they accepted what happened in the past and still does to a certain extent, but work to move on with life and live it as much as possible.

If you're just going to sit there and complain all day about how bad things are, you'll never get anything done.
If on the other hand you accept what's happening and then work towards a solution and don't let things drag you down, you'll get far in life.
Most of my female friends are exactly the types that don't let people walk all over them and I never ever hear them speak about inequality. Why? Because them complaining about it will makes things worse in most cases. Nobody likes a whinger.

The sad thing, is that the moment you question their victim mentality, you are immediately a racist/chauvinist/whatever and are totally against them.
