I was merely pointing out that fear of loneliness would be a poor reason for me to reconsider my views on marriage. However, I am not necessarily opposed to a course of action that carries with it a risk of future loneliness, so long as it offers benefits sufficient to offset that risk.

Of course, I won't deny that I employ a variety of defense mechanisms. Love is a battlefield, and I always carefully observe Zhongda's five operations:

If you can fight, fight; if you cannot fight, defend; if you cannot defend, flee; if you cannot flee, surrender; if you cannot surrender, die.

Marriage is surrender, so I will always defend or flee if possible before resorting to such action.

arbiter, who hurt you?

LET ME IN!

lol surrender

Posted by Slylee on Nov-25-2009 19:04:

well to me, being able to love again after being burned is a huge sign of strength. not letting anyone else in because of something that happened to you in the past is weak as far as i'm concerned.

i'm really glad that i was taught by both parents that shit happens in life and when you fall down or get your heart broken, you grieve for a little bit and then you get back up and dust your shoulders off and keep moving. it's a trait i have that i'm very proud of actually. nothing can really keep me down when it comes to stuff like that. life is too short.

Wait, this is puzzling! So, Arbiter is:

There's something really wrong here. Maybe, if we change Shinji for that girl with blue hair, believe that Nietzsche's moustache went somewhere else, and that Batman can be a female... Arbiter is an animu version of Batwoman with very prominent pubic hair.

I like it!

Posted by leph555 on Nov-25-2009 21:30:

well yes, it is true but that is why we have disciplined asian women in the world

they will be thankful just for you fucking them each night

Posted by Lira on Nov-25-2009 21:37:

Yeah, right. You know what else Asian women can do? THEY CAN MOTHERFUCKINGLY FLY!

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Nov-25-2009 21:40:

This other thread seems to indicate that the fabled "submissive Asian woman" is endangered, at least in Japan. Go get 'em while you still can, boys!

There needs to be a remix of that Tranquility Base track that has this motif.

  • Possibly Nietzsche's 2nd coming, judging from how he poses himself;
  • A Hot Cuban Girl, according to my views;
  • Batman, according to PKC's belief;
  • Shinji Ikari, an emo from an animu no one but Hal cares about, according to Jamie's psychological analysis.

I am all of those things, but none of them is what I am.

I have no quarrel with love, it's marriage that I'm hostile to.

The way I see it, I'm a valuable commodity. It would be unethical for me to deny women the opportunity to freely compete for me on the open market.

Moreover, I have no economic incentive to do so. If I commit to an exclusive dealing arrangement, then I'm no longer on the market, and thus I do not benefit from the threat of competition. My partner's incentive to provide me with value is decreased proportionately to the marginal increase in the cost of my terminating the relationship (which is likely to be particularly high in my case, due to my financial situation). My partner assumes a reciprocal risk (though not necessarily an equivalent risk, since the cost of terminating the relationship is likely to vary between married partners). Consequently, it becomes a modified prisoner's dilemma. This kind of situation produces high transaction costs and is likely to lead to economically inefficient outcomes, which is one reason why such exclusive dealing arrangements are often (rightfully) prohibited or at least tightly regulated in other business contexts.

Additionally, even if were to I decide to change my mind later, game theory suggests I may be advantaged by postponing marriage (see, e.g., http://www.slate.com/id/2188684/). That said, my strong personal preference for preserving the opportunity to change my mind is one of the reasons I'd likely opt not to make such a commitment as marriage even if it weren't for all of the reasons discussed previously.

Finally, even if the result of my choices do eventually lead to my living a solitary life when elderly, that's something I'm quite comfortable with. I don't really get lonely in the sense that I have some abstract desire for more human contact. For me, loneliness is always tied to missing some specific individual. As a result, the risk of loneliness may actually be higher if I were to marry, since I might well experience considerable loneliness associated with that person's absence if I were to outlive them. Granted, that's a risk with any long-term relationship, marriage or no marriage. I've already been down that road, and I'm not in any particular hurry to go there again.

The ultimate irony of course is that posts like these make me want to marry him more. did i say me? i meant us.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Nov-26-2009 03:27:

I would just like to slap him around a little and be physically aggressive with him, and maybe make fun of his penis or something. You don't need to get married to do any of those things.
