new format.

everyone makes it to the next round, but the top 4 teams have a 1st round bye while 5-12 play each other. in the past, there were 2 groups, and the top 4 teams from each group made it to the next round.

I am so glad that the Hockey tournament finally has started.

I can't help but to think that Canada wont make it to the finals, i have watched all the games so far but not that it has changed my opinion.

Most people think that Canada will meet Russia in the Finals, but something tells me it'll end in another manner, here's what i think... dont shoot me

2. Finland
3. Canada
4. Sweden

5. USA
6. Switzerland
7. Norway

p.s. it's so fun to see Sel�nne, Jokinen and Peltonen again, I never thought that'd happen after the last Olympic tournament.

It could very well happen. Anything can happen in a 1 game playoff.

I still think that it is Canada's gold to lose.

I've watched almost every single game, and there has been some great hockey. I am looking forward to a game with hopefully a little more contact tomorrow. What a different game it is internationally.

I agree wholeheartedly, anything can happen in a one-match playoff. Can't wait for tonights matches, three matches in a row which all has some awesome teams

Even if i am disappointed, I have to say that it was an entertaining game to watch. What a performance by Ryan Miller, if the US had a lesser goalie in the pipes the score would not have been pretty. Good for him, the pressure is all on his shoulders and he dealt with it well.

The other games were good as well. Russia and the Czechs actually showed a little physical play which was awesome, because even with the smaller ice surface the game has not been as "tough" as it was yesterday.

My understanding is that European players have always dreamed winning Olympic gold more than winning the Stanley Cup. Ovie is a rock star in Washington, in Russia I am positive his expectations are higher and that he has God like status.

He is the best Russian player to ever lace up some skates. Granted we've had superstars before, but none of his caliber. The guy is so young too, it's crazy that he's already viewed as a legend.

But he hasn't won anything yet. Ultimately he's getting a pass on that because he's so young. But sooner or later he'll be judged on not how well he played, but the silverware. I think he realizes that, and the Olympics are first in line.

what did don cherry have to say about the loss

On a scale of 1-10, rate each of the following in their prime: Ovechkin, Federov & Pavel Bure.

Just curious how you rate the other two since you gave Ovechkin, who played a great game yesterday, that high of an acclaim.

before we get to that, and those guys are great, i would say players like Makarov and Maltsev would receive higher rankings from me than Feddy and Bure.

Bure I'd rank @ a 6, he was fast - probably the fastest Russian I've ever seen on the ice, but realistically that's why his game was so good - he was a great winger but never really made anyone around him that much better. dude could chase down the puck and had a great shot tho.

Fedorov was the best Russian player of the 90's. A force on the Red Wings and the Motherland's team. I'd say, at his peak, he was about an 8. Maybe 8.5... He could play any position, could do everything in the game, and we can go on and on about how great he was on the ice - but it was his personality and philanthropy off the ice that really made him a superstar.

I'd throw Overchkin down for an 8 out of 10 right now, the point is that he's not even close to his prime. He's only 24 and is already skating like the best of them. Imagine what he can achieve in 3-4 years, barring any setbacks (injuries, gun possession charges, etc.)

For each of these players, it comes down to achievements. Bure and Fedorov both won worlds, but Feddy's got the Stanleys. Both were top scorers at one point in time or another. But neither has Olympic gold - something very important in Russia. I think that's why Ovechkin and the rest of the team is so focused this time around - they know they can separate themselves from pretty much every Russian team (since technically the Soviets won gold last) by winning gold @ these Olympics.

Ovechkin = 10. He is the most complete Russian player of all time. Not just a fancy pre madonna, but he has a physical side to him that frankly makes him the best hockey player in the world at the moment. I like Sidney Crosby and everything, but Ovie shits on him.

Federov = 8.5 . A great player when he was in his prime, but he gets an 8.5, because although good he was never the best player in the world in his career span. A proven winner though. Had he retired a bit earlier, i might have given him a higher rating.

Bure = 7.5. Pretty much the same reasons as Federov. That and he had 0 durability. One of the best pure goal scorers the game during his days, but he was never the best in the world.

Ovie is, he is just that damn good...another level above all of the other level players because he will kill you so many ways.

If we lose to Germany tonight, I am jumping on the Halak bandwagon

btw you can't rate Ovechkin in his prime, because he hasn't reached it yet and is still very young...isn't that scary?

speaking of Russian players how could one forget about:

Viacheslav Fetisov

Tretiak.

Fedorov and Bure had a teammate in CSKA whom also ended up playing in the NHL.. Remember that one guy who played 77 games in 92-93 and ended up scoring a measely 76+51=127? That's 7 more than Fed's season record btw

76 in 77!
