Hell, just look at the people they get to do the voice acting for these - Martin Sheen, Carrie-Ann Moss, Seth Green - they put some serious teeth into this series, except that unlike the FF games, the ME games do not behave like movies and spend half their time in cut scenes.

Only thing about the Mass Effect games is, they're kind of short, which I guess is understandable given what goes into them. If you're looking for a massive time-sink then go for DAO instead.

Honestly, play one or two BioWare games and everything else will seem like crap. (Well, Bethesda's stuff comes close, everything else is miles behind)

+1

On my fifth playthru of Dragon Age, and the expansion comes out in a week, which is pretty much a whole new saga to the story. ME2 was a fantastic story and I was very impressed, but down to the core, im more a dragon and magic rpg guy. I also found the regular fights in ME2 to be very repetitive by the end of the story, and very limited in their equipment choices.

Bethesda studios makes some of the other best RPGs, and the new Fallout Vegas looks to be amazing, with lots of more harder modes to create a more realistic rpg approach. Theyre also working on the next Elder Scrolls game, which is taking up a lot of their resources...or so the rumor is.

Was bored today, and traded in a bunch of stuff, for FFXIII, GOW3, Splinter cell, and got a new PSP with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Got rid of like 6 old games of mine and my DS lite with a few older games.

Hm, I thought they did a better job than they did in ME1, where one of the major (only) flaws was the insane inventory bloat.

And some of the heavy weapons were epic, tactical nukes!! For once they actually got the superweapon concept right - they can clear a room or make mincemeat out of bosses, if you can actually find enough ammo for them and stay out of sight long enough to fire it. In almost every other game I've played, the superweapons/superpowers either take away the challenge entirely or turn out to be useless when you really need them.

But in general I really preferred the system of "upgrades" to juggling around all that crap as it was in ME1. ME2 is the first RPG I've played that's done away with both of my pet peeves - inventory bloat and random battles / level grinds. DAO did away with the latter but not the former, and fans were rightly pissed - at least BioWare finally caved in with the "camp chest" add-on.

If there's one real complaint I have about ME2, it's that they focused on characters so much that they kind of starved the plot, hence the overall "shortness" of the game. I mean it had a few twists and turns and all, but no bombshells like ME1. It was more than adequate, mind you, it just wasn't as cool as the first game, where they set the bar pretty high.

I also missed the tank, but apparently there's a DLC coming out for it!

Yeah I think ME2 looks really good I never played the first one but they did a week long spot light on it on G4 tech tv only put in about an hour so far just cause i'm in the middle of Battlefield 2 BC, Pro in Fifa10, Left4Dead 2, Bioshock2 and AVP.

Upgrade system was great, though the mining on each planet was a bit gay (they could of made the gathering system a bit more entertaining). Im just a sucker for old fashion kill and loot type rpg lol. To me, I just want to see unique and interesting weapons/armors throughout the game that I achieve and not download :P . I found the battle system was like a less twitchy Gears of War experience, which was fun at first, but got boring for me. I wanted more strategy outta the battles considering it is an RPG. But again, maybe if i just pump the difficulty to the hardest, ill get that. (which is what happened with DA:O, the harder the difficulty, the more fun the battles became). RPGS become more and more mundane the further you progress, and fights become more or less the same ole.

Anyhow, just started playing FFXIII, and its such a beautiful game...good lord. Havent gotten far in, so I have no idea if the battle system is fun. I think I will enjoy this game somewhat, but not as much as the older NES/SNES ones.

Thumbs up

I'm definitely enjoying FFXIII

not blown away or anything but I like!!

Bwahahaha, I think that's too nerdy even for me. Now if they were playing Mega Man music, on the other hand...... no, no, I still wouldn't go.

This is true, I understand what Bioware is trying to do but I think the whole concept of DLC is sort of broken for linear games like Mass Effect. Even for DAO it was questionable, just getting handed these items with no real context.

I'd like to see a balance between the ME1 and ME2 systems, personally - same "loadout" concept as ME2, no inventory mishmash, but a bit more selection with the weapons/upgrades themselves. Like I said, they did a kick-ass job on the "heavy weapons", just didn't really put that much thought into the regular weapons.

Yeah, it gets way, way harder even on the "hard" setting. Even after you restart the campaign and keep all of the advanced weapons from the first playthrough, it's difficult to get through any of the combat sequences without one or both of your teammates getting knocked out. There's actually evidence of a rudimentary fire-and-motion AI, you'll see a few baddies laying down cover fire while the others rush, so you can't just hide behind cover the whole time. Try it and see for yourself.

So whats the verdict from the players of FF13?

Ive been reading reviews and even the good ones are headlining every red flag that told me this game was going to be watered-down garbage.

- No towns.
- No shops.
- No conversable NPCs.
- No side-quests.
- No mini-games.
- No airship.
- No world map.

Sounds like another slog through a hallway like FF10.

Confirm or Deny?

I'm about 8 hours in and I can say that most of what you just said is true. Story is nice but the battle system is strange and the lack of ability to explore the world is very missed. too linear. I am glad I purchased this game but after I have completed it, I'm sure I will be using it as bait to trade for another game on craigslist or kajiji.

Is the story worth playing through at least? FFX is a pile of linear bullshit, but I was still able to really enjoy the story and didnt regret playing it by the time I was done. If I find a cheap used copy one day, will it be worth it?

If I found a used copy I would pick it up. so far the story iss till very fragmented, and i'm now 12 hours in. So i'm waiting for this game to come together. So far imo not worth the 70 bones i paid for it.

Unfortunately, this game is repetitive. Minus the fact that you can't explore, after 10 hours of play i am still using the same weapons over an over. I haven't needed to upgrade much. The enemies are a joke, and the whole stagger system is boring. I am sorry, while the graphics are great and the rest of the game is a letdown. This game is so over exaggerated its laughable. Not worth the money.

Not liking it at ALLLLL! Really wanted some cool character customizations (Weapon/armor sets). Battles are getting a little too boring. Im 7 hours in and im not impressed. I wish they would just remake Chrono Trigger and fuck off.

I hate weapons upgrades. Just find NEW weapons that replace the shit ones. I dont get the sense that my character is improving.

oh....and the story has me bored!

Yep. They have a DS version of it I MUST pick up.

Also, if there is no exploration, no world man, just a plod through I am glad I'm not buying it. Will probably just get XIV instead and play online w a former co worker.

Holy TOTA Rpg fest. See you for sure. w0000000.

I used to play Eve Online and it was cool for a while but I wanted to do more than just fly a ship.

I think they actually did, in Japan, it just never made it past the border. But maybe I'm thinking of one of the old FF games...

Okay so i got it yesturday and i'm about 4 hrs in, imo its pretty thats about the only upside, i like that you dont run around in the battles like in 12 but it does seem super easy like i'm plowing through levels right fast i haven't even died once, and you get your whole life back after a fight and potions heal all party members its too easy imo.

p.s me and my buddy picked up GOW 3 this morning its SiiiiiK

Yeah, I was trying to emphasize the voice actors who are known outside the sci-fi genre. If you care about the sci-fi actors then there are lots more. Mass Effect 1 had Troi (Marina Sirtis).
