LOL? It doesn't matter what your listening habits and progression were. Regardless other people have the same right. Your message you've been implying in here is that you and your music are superior to others. Whatever reason you tell yourself; it's untrue and idiots like Tony and the other cookie cutter djs that have posted moronic statements in this thread have just as much right and inclination to listen to and believe in their music as you do. It doesn't mean I think they deserve to have that right because their attitudes are fucked but they do.

I can say the same thing for people like Ted Promo who plays Dubstep (which is not my cup of tea), and for Adam Vana (nefardec) who plays some of the most obscure, diverse, and old records I have ever heard (some of which I like and some I just don't).

Fair enough but you have to realize there are others on this forum that you may have never listened to or heard of who are just as "true to themselves" as your butt buddies. My point is that you're making incendiary comments towards the entire board; of which it's impossible for you to have knowledge of every talent on here.

Just play Deadmau5 and u will get gigs
If u wanna go the hipster route, then u better have some releases that people have actually heard of or forget trying to bring something new to the table these days. Playing tunes no one has heard of without a name/following will get u nowhere. This is the state of the scenes atm. It sucks

I don't get the morello hate at all. Whats wrong with enjoying DJing just for the sake of DJing?

Or learn how to market yourself. Pretty much all there is to it.
Bottom line is most people are lazy and most people gig to get paid or for help with their inferiority complex.
It's sad how few people are in the game for the right reasons.

And to Woscar; i'm not saying this is true of you but I know in my hometown everyone hates my music. It's all about breakstep, dubstep and other inane genres that people spin to be different because they got beat up and made fun of in high school
It was universally concluded that these people hated popular edm music because it got more play and makes more money than their genres of choice.
One could easily conclude that you hate on "bullshit kiddie music" as you referred to it for the simple reason that you're jealous of the appeal it has to such a big demograpic of people.

That's the way it was in '93. The megalomaniacal, carpet-bagging, weasels have moved back in and put a firm choke-hold on the market. Nevermind that their dismissal from the fringe was born out of a seeming and tacit requirement for innovation - something scarce in the Top 40/"Alternative" meat-markets. Perhaps, it's too many choices or the simple fact that a known quantity (AvB) is greater than an unknown quantity (Mark Asbrey and his ilk
).
Whatever the case, it's safe to assume that music made today has departed from its roots firmly planted in the global psychedelic experience and now songs purveying the narcissistic conception of ideal love are allowed to fester - their hideous visage a fixture on many a dance-floor. "Have another drinkypoo and he'll look better... but not in the morning."
The meat-market days are back, in full force. But don't blame AvB. Blame the crowd for being too dumb to even conceive of; and too cowed to dare and demand better.

LOL mfitterer, who's coming up with the assclown arguments?
I don't like it because it doesn't appeal to me in any way anymore. It's really that simple.

It's his job to make sure they like the music, and if he can pull that off and enjoy himself in the process I don't see anything wrong.

Confidence bro; try it. You can play whatever you want wherever you want whenever you want. Grow some balls and start something new instead of feeding the trends. Have some balls and tell a promoter you won't play for them if you can't play what you like. Dj'ing is not profitable enough to sell out unless you're at the top. So wtf are you doing? Go work in a warehouse you'll make more money and contain more dignity. |
First, before you can tell a promoter what's up, you need to be someone, have a name first. Only people I know that have that type of power are the ones you criticize. i.e. Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Oakenfold, David Guetta, etc. I'm not at that level. I've done much promoting in my life and the way your talking I would never hire you. Second, you don't know Los Angeles do ya. Read my post again, HIP HOP capital of the world. Trance music is fly shit here bro. Trust me. Let me give you a typical club scenario. There are a few clubs I spin at on occasion in Long Beach. Would you like to take a guess where my booth is. Outside patio. Also known as the smoking area. Hip Hop, R&B guys always get the inside. Another note, our type of music is only featured once a week in a Long Beach club, if your lucky. Those are rules, plan and simple. This is LA bro, not Oregon. While we're on the subject, the clubs I do spin at, I'm required to bring my own gear, lights too. Good thing I own a sound and lighting company. Plus you don't make the amount the DJ on the inside gets.
Second, Trance is not an American music style. You need to educate the people first. The music which they're influenced or are slowly getting into is the Deadmau5, Tiesto, Oakenfold stuff. Why do you think we spin this stuff. It's a new style to them. I have a lot friends who are getting into EDM, and boycotting Hip Hop. Would you like to guess what music they're listening too? I've mentioned his name several times. Anywho, The thing about LA is, your bringing in something new. Hip Hop is Goliath, Trance is David. You have to give them a road to start on. It's easier for me to introduce a true LA Hip Hop dude to Tiesto music then it would be with someone like Super 8. These people are used to dancing and listening to tunes which are around the 90-110 beats per minute. You have to baby step some into faster more aggressive music. Samething applies with club owners.
You brought up a good point about warehouse gigs. Yes, I do set up a few of these a year. But I have cut back a bit. Insurance and liability is murder, and not breaking even to cover you expenses, makes it not worth it all the time. You say I need to grow balls? Wow, you really don't have a clue how the industry works. Come to LA and I can show ya. Trust me, with the attitude you have, you will not get far simply because what are you bringing to the table? Do you simply spin records, are you an artist, do you write your own stuff? If your nothing more than a DJ, and you came here with that attitude, have fun bagging groceries. If you don't want to follow the owner and promoters requirements, they'll find someone else. We have thousands of DJ's in LA, they will find someone in a matter of minutes. You're nothing to them.
Lastly, take a look at the DJ Charts. Why is it the ones you dislike are always in the top 10? Either they're doing something right or they don't have balls.

My girlfriend jokes that Dr. Pepper would make my music more commercially viable, because of this commercial.
Your post reminded me of it and is also indicative of the prevalent attitude, not just in LA, but here in MI, (and I would suspect numerous else-where's in the continental US) where this commercial was widely shown.

In some markets you can branch out and do what you want, but in others you can't. I have my own style to work with but unfortunately where I reside you don't always get that option. Long Beach, CA is the Hip Hop capital of the world. Trying to find a club around me that plays Trance, Electro, whatever is a litlle harder to come by. Rarely do you hear our type of music, unless you travel up to LA. Even LA is still Hip Hop heavy. The Armin's and Tiesto ways of doing things is what selling. At least in America. Remember Trance is pretty new here.
Think of this, When Tiesto first hit the scene, what was his style, or what was he writing? Now look at his latest album. Sure many think he's a sell out, but he is trying to venture out. The Kaliedoscope album is huge America. I can't even count how many requests I get in a night, for Escape Me and I Will Be Here. If these are the kind of songs that put butts on the dancefloor, you have to go with it. If a club owner asked me to spin a 3 hour set of nothing but Tiesto tunes, well that's what I have to do.
Trust me, I get what your saying, and I get what others are saying. Sometimes though, you can't get your way. |
This reads like someone that doesn't live anywhere near California, let alone Los Angeles. Long Beach is is the Hip Hop capital of the world? fuck sake

I don't see anything wrong with that either. Just don't ask me to pay money to see someone who plays music I don't like.

It's as simple as that. |
Maybe where you live. I'm doing ok over here playing exactly what I want whenever I want, because I play time appropriate music relative to whatever situation I'm in without compromise. If you don't want to play music you don't like, then don't play parties where that is expected of you. Simple as that.
Also, a lot of superstar DJs seem to be playing what is expected of them, not what they want, which is a big mistake.

You're not catered to...it's the weekend clubbers that keep that club opened. The ones that go out just to go out, and not to hear the latest cutting edge music. If they don't hear the same garbage they hear on the radio, they won't buy alcohol. I hate where the scene is right now. Sure u can throw your own parties and that's what u have to do to play the Hipster shit, though you're playing to an empty club most of the time.

Not entirely. If you have Damian Lazarus play at a club that normally books David Guetta, people likely will be a little uncomfortable. But if you put people who know fuck all about dance music in a night club and let someone like Lazarus or Jamie Jones do their thing, they will buy alcohol and they will dance. The key here is that most people just don't care and don't know the difference. You can play good music to people and they will dance even if they usually like Guetta or Steve Angello.
BTW who said I go out to hear the latest cutting edge music? lol I got lots of old records in my rotation right now, and tracks from last year, the only thing that matters is that they sound good.

Oh fucking please, you are still playing what is popular, it's just popular with a different group. I'm not trying to be an ass Woscar, I like you, but I think you're being incredibly hypercritical over something that doesn't really warrant it at all. |
I also agree with this post. People can play all the jobber music they like, it doesn't bother me and it actually helps me. Without Guetta & Armin packing clubs there would be less money for the people on the fringe like me.

Moron, I do live here, and I know the area very well. Why don't you pick up a passport and come out here and see for yourself. There are way more Hip Hop clubs then Dance clubs. I've seen DJ's literally get picked up out of the booth and thrown out of the club by bouncers because they played something they shouldn't have.
Once again I will state. If someone asks me to spin 3 hours of Tiesto music only, I will do that, no questions asked. His music kicks ass and whenever I play his stuff, or the other stuff you don't like, the dance floor is packed and the bar is making money. And I have a gig to comeback too, because I gave them what they want. You have to get out of that dream dj booth called the bedroom sometime my friend.

I dunno where to begin.
Bas went to CSULB, and lives in LA, and has played several great parties around here.
Just because Long Beach has a bunch of hip hop clubs does not make it the 'Hip Hop capital of the world'
I would say either Los Angeles or New York hold that title, in general, if it is necessary to even give it.
Also, we play deep house, techno, disco, and everything in between at parties all around LA. There is a market for good music, that you are obviously unaware of. It's not mainstream and it's not what is most prevalent in Los Angeles at all, but it exists.
If you like playing trance, find trance parties and play at them. lol Simple as that.
