I just thought that the most interesting thing that he criticized is that the DJs at the beatport tent let their friends & fellow DJs hang out with them up on stage. This happens at all of the M_nus parties, so to see Richie or Cassy with a shitload of people behind him playing on Sunday was hardly a shock. I don't really see what the big deal of playing a set while your friends are there to hang out is, unless it's so distracting that you're playing like shit, which I didn't think was the case.

I AM SORRY

funny how this was the one time i actually agreed with him LOL

booth whore parties are ridiculous. I remember when richie was actually against anyone coming near the booth. He was so concentrated on his craft he rarely even had a chance to look up. And to be honest it made the whole plastikman image even more mysterious and cool.

Richie parties used to be all about the strobe light in the corner, the garbage bags on the walls, the parachute cieling and MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC

And if you noticed, that was what his Plastikman set was like.

Sorry you have an issue with him hanging out with his friends behind stage. Maybe he should be in a straightjacket where only hands work.

You're basically saying the same thing I did, sans the admittance that it might just be a generational thing that you won't "get" unless you're in your 20s, the age group which constitutes the majority of Hawtpants' current fanbase.

Personally, I generally still favour dark rooms with a shadow behind the decks and the focus squarely on the dancefloor, so we're not exactly in disagreement here.

its unprofessional to have your friends hanging out on stage with you but it seems to be what all the cool kids are doing this day and age.

I agree with PivotTechno on this one....it is a generation thing. Like him, I still prefer the dark room party with the mysterious shadow person behind the decks.

Personally, I prefer to pay more attention to the music, not what the DJ is wearing or the setting that he or she is in. Call me crazy.

I think possible "solution" or a next stage in evolution to this thing we call partying - is to just eliminate the stage all together. Put the DJ in the middle of the dancefloor so as to diminish any sense of grandeur that was built up over time for people who just play tunes.

Posted by PivotTechno on Jun-04-2010 15:14:

Or just put the DJ booth in the middle of the floor and turn it into a free-for-all to see who gets to man the controls. DJ Darwinism - last person standing gets to play!

But, since we are the ones who are paying for that particular DJ's performance (and not for the antics of the deluded entourage who try to leech off some of the headliner's glory), the onus is on the DJ to show a sufficent amount of respect, by at least giving the impression that they are as engrossed in the music as they want the crowd (who are so attentively and courteously facing them) to be. If the DJ wants to hang around with mates, go have a barbecue in your own bloody time, and not at our expense.

That's how it used to be, or have the DJ hidden altogether. We're going in the opposite direction, and it doesn't look like it's going to change any time soon.
