There is a "New Release Section" on the forums, and the overlap is just contributing to more clutter on the forums.

The name for MP should definitely change. Music promotion gives the impression that it is a forum to promote music. Yet when a label or artist puts their promotional post on there with links to beatport etc, they get a bollocking and told to move it to the new release section.

Call it "Production feedback and reviews" or something like that.

Well I think this thread just shows that we all want honest reviews. So next time, just give an honest review.

I really tend to only reply to songs that I feel need work, or songs that I think are really good though. Songs that need to much work I usually do not reply to because someone has usually already said it. Usually I'd listen to a song and just not reply, I think that speaks for itself in that the song is ok, but not great.

Yeah, I only tend to reply to songs that I think are good but lack something. If a producer's just hopeless I just don't bother. If the track's really good then I tend to reply, but you don't see that often, and I can usually think of something that I don't quite like in it, even if its only a subjective thing.

i used to post a lot on the music promo forum at one point, giving noobies advice and criticism usually. now i just click on the people who I know, who usually tend to deliver quality usually, also try to repay some feedback. i stopped knit picking ages ago.

sorry guys, but to be brutaly honest as you call it, this idea is complete bullshit...

First of all, there's a big difference between people doing music because they love it and people who make music as a product, which will be marketted and sold.

Now, why is that such a big problem? That's simple the person judging that, will either be the first type or the other.
If I, for example, would have a track, that is marketable...I would most certainly say it's just crap, usually not really too well produced neither musically interesting either...but the crowd of consumers will love it (remember crazy frog and all that crap?).

Then we would have a nice track, made for love of music, sparkling with emotions, beautifull melodies and the amazing harmonies that give you chills...you know...
Take the same track to the market and unless you are a big name, you won't sell a single copy, but it will still be an interesting artwork.

From both points of views, the idea is bullshit and really do we need a Simon Cowell on TA? If you want brutally honest feedback, go ask to have yourself BBQ'd in the COR!

I've re-read your post a few times and I have no idea what you are trying to say or what it has to do with the discussion we are having.

We're talking about giving 100% honest feedback, what does that have to do with how marketable a track is or the motivations of the producer who made it.

The thing that's hard about giving 100% honest feedback is that words cannot explain why. They can't get into specifics.

There are some things you can talk about. Perhaps a certain phrase is too long. The song drags along. The highs are too loud. The kick is out of place.

But perhaps those problems are not in a song at all. All I, and many people can really say is "I like/don't like it." I hear some awful pop songs, but they don't have problems that i've stated before. The problem is this: why do I hate/like the song? Words can't really describe it. The best answer I can come up with is "well I don't like the sounds put together, and the arrangement is nice"

I completely agree. We can go into details on the production, structure, technical stuff but in liking or disliking, its often an unexplainable, I like it or I don't.

But so long as when you say you really like a track, you actually mean it then that's what counts.

Posted by BOOsTER on Jul-15-2010 12:51:

What I mean is that there are two completely different perspectives to look at the track (or even more) each of these is completely different...and there's absolutely no-one on TA who would be able to objectively judge a track. That's all...perhaps I should have given a little more thought to my previous post...anyway, the idea of this Simon Cowell section is crap...if it ever happens, please at least name it some other way...we don't really need this "american idol" bullshit here on TA.
