Yeah, like I said, he's pretty much making everybody look like chumps. Justin Bieber's a homo.

Bullshit. Utter bullshit. I've lived in backwater towns where clubs were nightmarish meat markets and the DJs Top 40 rapists. If you can't feel any difference then I feel sorry for you. I spent most of my life in a small town in the middle of nowhere that didn't even have a record shop, dreaming of this scene where there were like-minded people and great parties. I had a moment recently when I was walking down Oldham Street in Manchester, record shopping to kill time before I saw Leftfield, and I stopped outside a shop window that was displaying the new Alaska LP. I realised I was living my dream. I might not always want to go out on a Friday night and one day I might get bored of it, but I'll always have the freedom to choose. There are thousands of people in America, many of them on this forum, who have that dream.

We'll see.

Understand, I'm not making a sweeping declaration. I'm just engaging in speculation that, maybe in five or ten years from now, you'll see things in a different light. The bottom line is that if there was nothing more to it - that if I honestly thought that the only virtue of club culture was meaningless, indulgent la Dolce Vita smeared in bodily fluid and weeping from cuts before the hasty retreat into respectable life-style - I wouldn't be who I am doing what I do.

I spent a good chunk of my early twenties in a nightclub right around the time the rave culture was breaking through, over here. I've worked as a bar-back, bouncer, and bar-tender. When you were learning to tie your shoes and tell time, I was walking down Sixth Street in Austin, TX, getting hand outs for raves from passersby who wore furry Cat-in-the-Hat hats. I've worked for two 808 State shows, right across the street from the tawdry frat-row meat-market & date rape emporium - and a girl bought me a drink there, too.

It's not that I haven't had my share of eureka moments and a hell of a lot of fun, whether I was on acid, pilled, stoned, drunk, all-of-the-above, or stone cold sober. Most of that, however, happened after I saw everything truly for what it was. That there was a bad that came with the good.

Floors stained with bar-mat-gimlet in no way are the sum of my experience. I've had those moments, you describe, thumbing through records with fifty dollars of disposable income, and walking home with a stack of vinyl long after my excess driven, Hunter S. Thompson moments of clarity.

the only thing people should come to understand from this appearance is that music is a gimmick.

deadmau5 is there because he wears a big mouse suit, that's the only reason.

it's the same thing that makes lady gaga the biggest star in the world; her shock value.

if you want real success in music (or business in general) you need a gimmick to set you apart from everyone else out there. those that market themselves the best get the attention.

You've got it ass backwards.

Eminem is rapping to a generation that doesn't care, Ke$ha, Justin Bieber, Drake, and all the other garbage artists are utterly embarrassing. Deadmau5 actually looks a lot better than they do, and has more talent.

that's your opinion given your taste in music. there are millions saying just the opposite..."who's this guy in the big mouse costume playing that techno crap? you mean he can't sing or play an instrument?"

I agree with him...deadmau5 is the only artist on the show so far that isn't being rammed down your throat. Anyone who hates mainstream music might like him, but I doubt many people are noticing him right now.

You think Ke$ha and Drake have more talent than deadmau5? Oh, okay.

I don't see Justin Bieber playing any instruments.

OH SNAP!

I do kinda wish that the Mau5 got more screen time, though.

It's so weird to hear dubstep after hearing all this shit music.

I don't disagree, he's certainly not a main attraction, but he definitely has made a name for himself.

I'm just saying, how many artists are performing here that are using a guitar, bass, etc? Mainstream music is evolving, most of it is pop trash that is synthesized and autotuned. I would say that most people respect deadmau5, regardless of whether or not they are educated about his scene.

this whole thread is full of fucking fail.

who cares about the vmas anyways? MTV is a joke.

Maybe, but again, the important part is that I have the chance to get burned out. Not everyone will agree with you, not everyone will end up where you have. You seem to have left the original subject behind and descended into meditation on the very point of the dance music scene.

I know, that just came out of NOWHERE. It wasn't half bad, though.

i'm not trying to dump on deadmau5 here at all. i agree it's pretty impressive how he has risen to the top. i can admit that even if i'm not a fan of his. i just really don't think this appearance is going to have any effect on trance etc becoming more popular.

Posted by Scrittah on Sep-13-2010 03:17:

Well, now that it's all over, what are your thoughts? I thought it was a pretty disappointing show, but Kanye's performance was fantastic, and made the show for me. I thought it was pretty funny, tho, that Kanye got more showtime "DJing" then Deadmau5 did.

Oh, hell no, yeah, nobody will listen to trance because of deadmau5. They'll probably look up his productions, and at best, start following electro house and dubstep.

Agreed. I wouldn't even be certain our outlooks would be that similar. I think, however, you'll have a better appreciation for mine regardless of whether you agree with it.

It was a tangent I raised which you pursued.

The show actually made me like deadmau5 even more. Even though the music he played was average, when you put it up against all the other shit throughout the night it sounded golden.

And Kayne's song sucked between the generic drum beat and shitty autotone.
