I don't think any of us want to see it fail but it is a tough uphill battle for it to work. Many of the people on a site like this are not going to be happy with a club that plays commercial house every night...you might as well just call it top 40 IMO.

I don't think it really matters how much promotion you throw at it....it will not bring in people from areas outside KW. You might have a small portion of people who will stay in KW now instead of going to Toronto but it won't be enough to keep a club going.

Reality is you won't be able to even tell if the club can succeed until it makes it through its first year.

all true, but i think with the lineup they have for saturdays (which doesn't look too commercial to me ), plus the money they'll bring in on whatever they do for their friday nights will be enough. i know its gonna be hard but i'm being optimistic --> a good club never came without a little hard work to get it going!

PLUS, i already know a few people who are willing to come from Toronto to Waterloo on a THURSDAY to see Steve Angello cause its his only Ontario stop. so that isn't always necessarily true that people won't come from outside KW

Im guessing you're a relative newbie in the area... I havent had that optimism since the first year I lived in the tri cities area 7 long years ago. =)

The club game is fickle. Especially in the tri cities area.

Granted the market has changed alot. Back in 2003, house music was at its lowest point in popularity since it came about in the mid 80's Now its on the upswing, and has been for the last couple years.

I wish beta all the best, and ill definitely be out to a few of the events.

I lost that optimism after about my 23rd birthday. I've seen a lot of clubs come and go in the area since I was 19....17 years ago....and the only club that seems to survive is Revolution. They are obviously doing something right.

props on the steve angello booking!

I hope it works out.

proom is a great time to.

Posted by randallpink on Oct-17-2010 17:54:

almost 1400 people on their facebook fan page before its even open! looking good!

Posted by loopdokter on Oct-17-2010 21:52:

Beta can make this work, but they've gotta bring NAMES. People that other people will want to see and will travel in from the outer regions of this area like Milton, Guelph, London, Cambridge, etc. If they get a really good name, they may be even able to pull in people from Toronto.

Abstract ran a successful Thursday night for 2 years. The nature of the club business is that most 'successful' clubs only have a 2 year long shelf life anyway. I have never seen so many venues in Waterloo open at once and most of them seemingly doing well - and those venues are all catering to the hip hop and mainstream dance crowd.

So far the marketing and everything behind this seems to be about right. They're doing this in a very Toronto way, so if anything I applaud them for trying.

I saw an Angello flyer today in K/W! WOW, it's like I'm in Toronto.

Posted by Beta on Oct-18-2010 00:02:

flyer

Nice flyer eh... LOL...

Just started the promo team on Saturday, they will be out every Fri/Sat and weekdays to poster the city.

It's looking like a new city. Promo team said over half the people they talked to already knew or heard of BETA, so I guess we are gonna get going with a running start!!!!

They're all over campus at Laurier. Litter-ally. (Pun intended) :P
Guess that's one way of getting it out.
Despite the fact that they're strewn all over the ground (Ah, but it reminds me of the outside of Guv... and other clubs in Toronto) the flyers look really good.

havent been on TA in a whille! Can't wait for this club to open! Just like Jason, I have seen the plans and checked out the club a few nights back....Waterloo is in for a HUGE awakening

Posted by tvmann on Oct-27-2010 17:16:

Congrats to Waterloo on this new club with an EDM night!

Way back, I saw a few movies in the theater that's being converted to the club, when I was a UofW student and lived and worked nearby. One was Woody Allen - Take the Money and Run.

Looking at the Streetview Google maps the downtown has not changed much, surprising given the area growth and RIM wealth. Ali Babba Steak House is still down the street, lots of other businesses are the same, and the rooming house on Erb where I stayed **mumble42mumble** years ago is still there operating!

This is looking very promising!

I hope it goes well!

Might make the trip from Hamilton once in a while.

Posted by loopdokter on Nov-03-2010 04:49:

I've had the pleasure of checking out the progress the last week.

I lent a hand with some sound (albeit small) so the lighting tech could program the lights. The truss is indeed retarded.

I had a look at the sound too. Dynacord for the win. This place is gonna smoke (literally - they were testing that out when I was there). I don't want to say too much for fear of letting too much out of the bag, but people, this place is for real.

Most Toronto venues would even struggle to do something like this.

I agree, no Toronto venues have made the struggle yet. I do not really like to compare our venue and label it by saying it is like a Toronto venue. Honestly there is nothing in Toronto like it. At least for now. If there was I would be there every weekend

------

Also I have the displeasure of announcing that we are slightly behind on renovations and will be cancelling all events this upcoming weekend.

SO JUST TO BE CLEAR we WILL NOT BE OPEN THIS WEEKEND.

Smile Tongue

Really anxious to check this place out
