im bored at work so i'll jump in
i have to agree with jay, no matter what music your playing a +/-1 BMP in change IS NOT going to build/throw your set, NOBODY will even notice
if your talking about a +5/-5 then completly agree.
I may not be as experienced as some, but certainly been to a couple of parties, including a blackout night, over the past 6+ years, and what your saying martin is true, but take into account that out of 100 ppl (maybe not at your gigs) 5 ppl really feel the whole effect, or skill or wtv you want to call it, truly notice a really good mix, etc
at the end of the day, if your in an afterhours club, your on something....if not 98.7 % are....
people just go to have a good time, dance and take drugs....be honest Martin, if you did a black out event from 10-3 with no drugs, how many ppl would go, or any gig for any DJ for that matter....
Sad but true, its part of the culture, scene
i think a good DJ is a person who builds a good set with the right story, and can mix decently... ppl can write an essay on everything else, but when it comes down to it thats the just of it.
your there to make ppl move and enjoy their night...i dont care if your using 7000$ equip or 500$...cause how you build a set/build mood no equip can duplicate
I never said somebody can notice a 1 bpm change, I said I did.
And I stand my position that 2 bpm can change the overall vibe.
Also true that most people won't notice anything. I am not saying otherwise.
The only thing that you can notice while you are all night on drugs as an audience is what feels right, and what feels wrong.
When a set is nicely done with the right mood and complexity, what you don't notice doesn't mean as no impact on your brain.
According to webers law(JND) the human ear and brain would notice a change(unless you have hearing problems), however would you react to that change is a different story...
So we have solved the mystery of WILL THEY NOTICE? cause everybody's brain would notice, but people consciousness is altered by drugs/alcohol whatever.. You will react to the faster bpm by moving faster, consciously or not... And even 1 bpm will change something... Yea most people wont be able to tell what bpm it is or what is happening.. People have preferences and that is what matters in the end... If you are used to listening to pounding 130+bpm techno you will notice a difference when u walk into a room thats playing the same techno 2-3 bpm lower..
Anyway it's my fucking night and I will play at 115 bpm if I feel like it.
Case closed ;-)

who really cares how this convo came about. There are more good comments in this thread than there have been on here in months. This is a good thing.
and martin: everyone's old sets sucked, not just you. If anything your progression as a dj over the years shows many good things and is a testament to hard work.
now just give in and play at 115

I don't even know which old sets we are talking about.
I have all the sets that have an official name up to old Monday Morning from 2001 or 2002. A few live at Ravemontreal (12 and 14 I think), a few live at Black Out, and 2 live @ piknic electronik.

Yes black was indeed the mix that was given for free at Surface. I was not happy with the first 2 drafts of The Fury and since the idea faded away. But there's plenty more to come.
From my experiences , a change in 1 BPM is a very slight change and 90% of ppl will never notice it. Now how it affects the crowd in the long term or on a sub-conscious level is a different story.
3+/- BPM for any track is significant and can affect the crowd. 5 +/- BPM and your into almost into a new genre.
But the comments back and forth about the crowd I think is comparing apples to oranges. From what I have seen you really have three categories of people showing up on the dance floor:
A) Experienced EDM lovers who are passionate about the music and are looking for something special from the DJ whether it is on a technical level or creative level.
B) Young or Un-evolved clubbers who don't understand what they are listening too but want to just have fun and a happy experience.
C) People who don't care about the music and are in the club for reasons that are outside the scope of this conversation.
And I think what is being confused here is which category of people in the club we think matter to a DJ.
Musical taste is subjective and that means that thousands will adore Offer Nissim's music and could care less about his technical ability. In fact his dj mixing skill is actually doesn't really matter to most of his fans because they don't pay to watch him perform because of his technical ability , it's because of how his music makes them feel.
Same is true with trance in some cases ( a la Tiesto ), it's a musical trip that attracts thousands to see a DJ perform , how technically amazing the DJ is not always the priority here.
In other genres technical ability is more relevant, such as techno or house. If the DJ can't mix then the set sounds pretty lame. Genres that are percussion centric place higher expectations on the DJ because the mixing has a much bigger role in the set.
I think Creator is speaking about people in the A) and B) category when he says subtle changes in the set can make a difference. Even if it's not obvious to the trained ear or if they don't realize it.
The people who REALLY don't care about good mixing or bad mixing is in category C) , and this isn't an aspect of the club Creator is entertaining in this topic.
It sounds to be Jay keeps referring to category C) , which does represent a percentage of the crowd in a club but isn't going to make a difference to a DJ in the long term.
Jay is right, we aren't splitting the atom here or designing a new rocket, but there is more to just a 4/4 beat and drugs... otherwise EDM would never have evolved as much as it has in the past 20 years.
