Tastes differ i guess, what one finds "boring" someone else finds "smooth" What one finds "aggressive" someone else finds "ear piercing". But beyond all of that there is something like absolute quality in a track, which is the balance in the mix (regardless of patch/tone preference) the amount of dynamics, overall loudness etc.
And you have a lot to gain there. I guess decent (as in non coloured) monitors will be your first requirement, These don't need to be overly expense, DJ RANN already gave a nice summary a few weeks ago. How old are you BTW?

UAD DSP is a dead platform, i am pretty sure they will announce "something" really soon. As the DSP's are holding them back from competition, rather than giving them an advantage.
If you don't believe it? look at the prices of TC electronics Powercore platform, the've slashed all prices in half, you can buy PCIe boards 2nd hand for very little. Same for Duende.
UAD was a game changer in the 486 / Pentium timeframe, but is now nothing more than an overdue dinosaur waiting to be extinct....
