he was commenting on my love of Shackleton et al fyi. it makes sense what he says. the kinda stuff i like aligns itself with genres i already like, like dub techno, idm, the soulful 2-step garage that came in 98-99, and the stuff on Skulldisco and Mala - Alicia falls resonates with the sounds in those genres. i'm predisposed to like that specific stuff cuz of previous listening. Especially if you take stuff like Groove Chronicles that started the wobble wobble:

sounds alot like 2-step garage. alot of the guys into dubstep (ie brostep) like it cuz of its harshness, its difference from the smoother stuff. one guy i was talking to said, "i like music so dirty that it's like fingering your little sister and finding your daddy's wedding ring" . and these are the same guys who hate "that techno shit" but love electrohouse.

you can just filter out all of the highs and most of the mids and mix it with a nice tool and get the track of your dreams

im considering doing this

Yeah... but I don't get why this is being said. What is Ted playing devil's advocate against? Here's what happened in this thread:

Osterzone: "How does that sound like dubstep at all?"

You: "you have never heard of the Peverelist? or Shackleton? or Skulldisco (their label)? check it out. this is where the real nice sound of dubstep is coming out of. the wobbly stuff is just a scratch on the surface."

Ted: "Allow me to play devil's advocate here in saying that usually these artists appeal to people who already have a predisposition to tech house and techno."

I don't get it. Where has this discussion about why we like certain styles come from? It's self-evident that people who want filthy music will go for one sub-style of dubstep, people who want spacey stuff will go for another, people who want soulful stuff will go somewhere else etc.

nahhh. this is not the chain of events. Woony posted in response to my dislike of everything else Mala ever made except "Alicia". Ted said my like of dubstep aint teh truestep. it has been influenced. i agreed.

edit: btw, this is one of dem influences:

Those three posts I just repeated where quoting each other in that exact order. Ted didn't quote anything you said about Mala or anything you said to Woony.

breakfast does not lead to lunch. tings are not as chronologically linked as they may seem

The quote by Mr. Promo referred to the "techy sound" that i like:

"the dubstep i like is more techy, like some of the stuff released on Skulldisco. Mala - Alicia just reminded me of old 2-step garage like Groove Chronicles, had that same loungin jazzy vibe."

anyway, the thread seems done, but anyone have example of dubstep that sound like the Skulldisco stuff? (more techy is better, more intricate percussion is better, more ambient is better)

Posted by sljiva on Nov-18-2010 01:45:

Since you mentioned idm, you could check out Defrag and especially Funckarma. Funcken brothers are idm->dubstep converts, but they detained clicks, pops, glitches and other idm elements in their music.

will do, sir.

I find it hard to find something exactly like Shackleton since I always figured he has quite a unique style.

Here is what I came up with no idea if this satisfys you

Yep. Apart from the how fiercely political of a project Muslimgauze is, I've always considered Shack to be more or less an extension of Bryn Jones for the new millenium. The similarity between his material and the early Skull Disco- and Mordant Music-stuff is very clear.

...

sebastian leger used to play and make soulful house music... what happened to him?

Posted by ontheblock on Nov-19-2010 17:10:

...

saying that, he is very talented at making fun of dubstep - keep doing this seb!

Posted by pozz on Nov-19-2010 17:12:

@Woony - Pinch - Croydon House is fooking choon!

@Sand Leaper - forgot about him. youre right about the influence tho. you can see it in this track too:

Wobble is good in moderation, I like what Skream does on his Skreamizm releases. However, it's way overused lately and very forced which results in alarming ratio of rubbish dubstep to quality dubstep. It's so hard to find good dubstep nowadays.

I'd like to hear more dubstep like Skream's Rinse 02 and N-Type's Dubstep Allstars Vol. 5. Also, Skream's Midnight Request Line is without a doubt one of dubstep-defining tracks.

Needless to say, Distance is one of the best dubstep artists ever.

Combination of IDM and dubstep, now that is something I'd like to hear. I'll definitely check them out.

If you ignore Brostep, Dubstep is almost looking better than ever before.

The DMZ guys keep doing their thing, Deep Medi and Swamp81 have been amazziiiing lately. Then there's Scuba/Hotflush/Ostgut doing the Techno/Dubstep merging thing, Instra:mental/dBridge doing the DnB/Dubstep Autonomic sound and people like James Blake completely pushing the boundaries of the genre. And Echodub for example doing Ambient/IDM-Dubstep and there's even people pushing the Dubstep-House sound, Fortified Audio & Nightslugs for example.

Some nice recommendations, thanks, I'll check them out.

Looks like Scuba is as close as it gets to Burial.

For me Scuba always was the exact opposite of Burial, very clean and mechinal/techno style.

There are a few people copying Burial but I think he is very unique and out of the normal Dubstep scene.

This would be a good example of someone copying Burial, but it's still pretty good I think. (Immerse Records has a lot of this stuff)

You should also check out Clubroot, he has his own style but he has a bit of an Burial touch.

Thanks for posting that Clubroot, really enjoyed that.

I'm also a big fan of that Late EP... I like "Under These Conditions" a lot.

This is the wrong Clubroot album to compare with Burial, really. The first Clubroot album has a much eerier and darker sound. The new album sounds more panoramic and lush to me.

Posted by Gauss on Nov-25-2010 02:29:

Woonyxoxo:

I don't know, I wouldn't call it the exact opposite... The feeling in their tracks is similar to me.

Thanks for posting Late, it really does sound like Burial and I like it, I'll check out more of his stuff.

I like Clubroot as well and will check him out too.
