That's why it might be a good idea to mirror all files i.e. store each file on two separate CD-Rs (those guys suggesting only one CD-R probably keep the second copy on the hard disk, which amounts to the same thing). I've got a hard disk with only 2,5 Gigabytes capacity, so I store each mp3 on two CD-Rs. It's proven necessary even if it costs double as much for the two CD-Rs. If one is downloading well-known trance tracks, this may not be essential because it's relatively easy to download again the lost tracks. A damaged CD-R probably means only losing at most 80 tunes, which isn't so awful. However, I specialize in collecting rare tracks, so even one lost CD-R would be a tragedy for me. Most likely I would never find some tracks again. So now finally to the point of my post. I have recently had a strange problem. My computer often reports that it has lost information about the contents of CD-R. So the CD-R appears to be empty, even though in reality it is filled with mp3s. ScanDisk say that the CD-R label info is damaged, and is usually able to repair the CD-R. What is the cause of this problem? Is it dust or some obscure software problem, which makes a totally flawless CD-R to be reported as damaged? ![]() Whatever it is, I suggest keeping two copies of each important file because no storing device is very reliable these days |
also i odnt like to back stuff up on cd, becasue it makes them lose quality for some reason, it might be because all the old stuff i had was encoded in 128, but yea, fi you check those old cds, the quality of the mp3s suck, so good thing i had all my old rare mp3s on a second harddrive

Another solution
Go to some fellow TA's house and copy all his MP3 from his HD....
(Assumming there is someone near you)
PS: Also, the guy that u re copying from will have a partial backup in case something happens
d00d, that just fucking sux
always back up your mp3s on cd
hey man i lost a bunch of trance on two occasions also but in far less quantities as yourself but all i can say is that before i knew it i was surpassing my previous amounts in no time...also spread your tracks to ya mates so you can always get em if you need em...
Yah, loosing all your mp3s is never any fun
Have you been able to get them back using a recovery program or anything? I hope so, it happened to me, but my hard drive phisically broke, so there wasnt any getting them back i was pretty pissed myself
So know I know to always have backups, too bad we both had to learn that lesson the hard way
I got a virus and lost all my mp3s and pics, luckily though with the help of mizz I got the mp3s back. Sorry dude
Everyone go out and buy and external hard drive, screw cd-R/RW
i feel your pain...ive lost something like 30gb of mp3s dude to various broken raid stripes and HDD crashes....not fun i wanted to kill somone/throw my computer in the pool every time....each time i kicked myself in the arse for not backing up....now i do....to a limited extent but i back up most of my good stuff and the stuff i can survive listeing to while i dl replacements if it ever crashes again. CD-R is pretty easy but if you have the money get an external HDD you can get them at staples 40gb for like $170US or you can get a DVD burner for like $270US which i would LOVE to have cause it would make storage soooooo much easier....i know how you feel but life goes on. oh another thing get widget print dir. you can make lists of every file in a dir. including subdir.s with filename, size, location, helpful to see what you lost and what you want to download again....cause it sucks to lose everything and then be like...I HAD SO MANY GOOD TRACKS, BUT I FORGOT ALL THE NAMES lol. so just be careful backup often. excuse me while i go burn some backup cds
oh noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! omigod...i dun have nearly as much trance as you...but ouch...the pain. i dun even know what to say...if that ever happened to me...i would cry for a week and forever...*sigh....
Hey Tranceseeker man I feel your pain and I'm sorry about your loss. However there may be some hope left. zzleeper is right on about Easy Recovery. I work with data loss quite a bit as I'm in the IT department for a large company. Try both Easy Recovery and Forensic Utility Suite and your chances of recovery are high as long as you have not messed with the drive a whole lot. Also Winternal Admin Pack has some decent data recovery software as well as a final effort. Unfortunately, professional data recovery solutions are much too high for the average joe. I deal with Ontrack Data Recovery systems for such recoveries and you would be looking at a grand or more and I don't think those MP3s are worth that much to you. Have you tried as others have suggest to rename a file's extension to .mp3 and try to play it? It really sounds to me like you have a virus. I would bet your hard drive's integrity is intact. Run either McAfee or Norton with the latest definitions and see what turns up. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!
