Hmm, the ratio of interesting genres to shitty ones has shifted somewhat now. Might get on this one after all.

For this competition, I think that everybody participating should make the effort to listen to each other's mixes, even if it's not their genre of choice. One thing I noticed from the last few mixes, is that a lot of people just seemed to d/l and comment on the genres they liked, and some of the more obscure/less popular genre mixes were ignored.

Also, perhaps Sushi could host the mixes for the competitions?

this is interesting for me, learning to mix different schemes than the 4x4 is a great challenge.

That would, of course, be desirable, but I don't think it's very realistic. First, people are lazy and don't have the time to listen to 10-20 mixes within a short period of time. And second, if some dislikes say Ambient, how can you force him to listen to a mix of it and write a meaningful comment? What will come out is something like "boring, not my cup of tea, not enough donk" I think the only people who will listen and comment are those who're somewhat interested in Ambient.

Meh. A couple of these genres I really, really, really don't want to get. Hopefully I won't regret this

Since I never got my mix made last time, I'm going to enter Tech-Trance again. And for the record that means Oliver Lieb/Der Dritte Raum/Etc, NOT SvD or some shit like that.

Can we really call "vocal house" a genre?

Posted by Rodri Santos on Jan-27-2011 22:20:

only if you are able to find recent vocal tracks where the vocal stems are just a complement of the track and not the main hook and that are not cheesy at all.

What looks easy and wide can turn into a difficult one then.

Don't they call "vocal trance" a genre?

Yeah, I believe the same applies to house. You know, this cheesy house with some vocals thrown in there, talking about the sun and the love around us. Dunno why but I enjoy it occasionally.

Who?

Vocal house is just house with vocals. Doesn't seem any more of a genre than "piano house" to me.

More than happy to host any/all of them.

You know... them!

My first mix for this challenge was "Chicago/Detroit House", and the only real guidelines for me was to look for tracks with black chicks doing the vocals. Would you call "Chicago/Detroit House" an actual genre?

Edit: I also don't think that vocal trance is anything but trance with vocals either. Much like "piano trance"

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-28-2011 02:01:

Of course Chicago house is a genre. Come on man, that's Dance Music History 101.

Posted by ziptnf on Jan-28-2011 03:12:

I'd like to take that course. Teach me, oh wise one.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-28-2011 03:28:

Just listen to this compilation: http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-.../release/167514

Posted by ziptnf on Jan-28-2011 03:34:

I really like what I'm hearing so far. I don't think my mix was too far off. I always considered Chicago House to be more of a regional style rather than an actual genre. I suppose I stand corrected.

I'm having a hard time figuring out the difference between 2 Step/UK Garage and UK Funky. All the samples I hear sound pretty similar.

Majority of these genres look good to me.. just a couple I'll be pissed about getting.

There is certainly similarity, in fact its probably fair to say that UK funky is a direct descendant of UK garage. I only have a limited knowledge of UK funky so this could be a little off but Id say that garage is closer to breaks and house where as funky would be more like dubstep and possibly a bit more aggressive.

Not sure Ive worded that quite right but its how I see the difference in my head. I could be speaking out my arse though, Ive never really paid much attention to UK funky and I gave up on garage when I left Romford haha.

EDIT. Examples...

UK Funky

UK Garage

That's because funky evolved from UK Garage to begin with. To a certain extent, it carries on the same poppy "sexy" and "glamorous" image that started with 2step, with the same squeaky-voiced women and pop hooks. However, funky has the same strain of people making the very bassdriven and minimal stuff that UK Garage eventually developed also:

If anything, UK funky is now starting to sound more like the old percussive dubby numbers people like Masters At Work were making early on:

edit: bah, got beaten to it.

Posted by Lews on Jan-29-2011 07:17:

I guess I'll veto UK Funky.. Still having a hard time figuring out the difference though
