I was gonna give this a crack if thats alright, although after hearing what you've done already Raphie, I may as well quit while my dignity is still intact...nice work! Certainly groovy!

Got some nice loops there!

Raphie - liking the minimal groove here, really nice work so far.I personaly think it needs not much more than a nice big big furious synth break, ha!

I forgot to say btw on my own track, 'mastering', it's just slammed through a free Kjaerhous limiter at the mo. The kikc an snare come through fine on the un'mastered' verison.

love this dude , really, no need for big synth imo ,i think 2nd break in witch you develop that roaring bass maybe open the cut off if there is one will explode this tune

Posted by Raphie on Mar-06-2011 19:53:

Got some nice ideas being worked on, if you like this, next version will be a killer, imagine the big roar, the "think i'm funny" vocal ..... NO I AM NOT TELL YET, but it's going to be pretty cool

Groove is ok, bass is ok, like the string, break is going to be very ok. main challenge is time, but will continue next Friday.

Alright - since Raphie couldn't wait to show off, here's an earlier version of what I'm currently working, regarding this mix. Even though I squashed the mother-love out of it, please feel free to abuse it, sorely.

Don't bother complimenting me, Raphie! The game is on. You'll not be causing me to rest on my laurels. I am going to kick your ass at this if I have to pay you to master it, for me!

EDIT: Thanks for your help, 112268! Your feedback, even though it was a trash mix, is serving its purpose.

Posted by Raphie on Mar-06-2011 20:57:

No worries guys, this release is on the house, with or without my version (i love your competitive attitude mr. Zilker )

Posted by 112268 on Mar-06-2011 21:26:

theres litteraly nothing there. cant you hear it? i think u left some effects on or something.

Posted by EddieZilker on Mar-06-2011 21:35:

I'll admit, it's pretty sparse and I have yet to line up a sample I split so that it splices, properly, but I've listened to every version of the render, including sound-clouds 128kbps conversion, there is. If there's anything wrong with it, it's that it is far too over-compressed and it's missing a little (well, okay - a lot) too much low-end, but the highs should be apparent.

EDIT: & the mixing is deeply, deeply (quite intentionally) flawed but the essential idea should still be there.

Posted by 112268 on Mar-06-2011 21:48:

no, compare to Raphies version and youll understand that yours lack both bass, mids and treble. Im not saying it to be an asshole but its litterally nothing there. i can hear any melody, i have to turn up my monitors with 20dB to hear the drums, but then the odd kick without depth is in my face. its really weird and im wondering you have made it with headphones on max volume. thats the only way something like this would occur. and no its not compressed at all lol. again im not being an ass, im just saying theres something terrible wrong there.

Posted by EddieZilker on Mar-06-2011 21:50:

Catch my edit.

I kind of made it to sound horrible.

Posted by 112268 on Mar-06-2011 21:52:

is this some kind of sick joke then?

sorry i dont understand it. i must ask though, what do you use for monitoring.

Posted by EddieZilker on Mar-06-2011 22:02:

It's sort of a joke, only I didn't mean it to sound so bad to earn your remarks. That may have backfired, a little. But it really was meant to sound retarded.

I'm using Sony MDR-700's and didn't even use speakers. Just ran it through the Mastering Suite on Reason 5 and then through a couple of bass shelves and compression in SONAR with a limiter.

Normally, I keep my headphones very, very quiet at about 30% of what the card is capable of dishing out. I'll export stems and individual tracks out of Reason and then mix in SONAR. I'll use both speakers and headphones to get the balance on the mix, right. I just put out a very rough rendering with this, though.

Posted by 112268 on Mar-06-2011 22:12:

well the sound sux on it, joke or not.
and ditch those 700 headphones before youll have no hearing left.

Posted by EddieZilker on Mar-06-2011 22:21:

Monitor upgrades are on my list after a fully dedicated music computer.

Should have used Raphie's as a benchmark - his mix is superb, at this point.

Posted by 112268 on Mar-06-2011 22:27:

i listened through your soundcloud and all your other stuff sounds better so im not sure monitoring was the only problem in this attempt. there seems to be something completely wrong. the snares and hihats lacks 20dB, baseline is completely lacking, the kick doesnt have a tail and it seems highpassed. Theres no melody and the voicesample seems to be distorting of some kind. There are many seconds of complete silence. Practically everything is wrong with it and I doubt you can blame monitoring, its like its made by washley. Did you put a random VST-effect on everything?

edit: oh and just to make sure i dont piss you off lol.

Well, apart from the fact that I pretty much engineered it to sound shitty (but not as shitty as you're hearing) and that I didn't render tracks out separately for additional processing in SONAR, I have just upgraded to Reason 5 from version 3 and am quite thoroughly exploring all the new toys it has to offer.

I don't blame the headphones, at all, and my hearing is fine and being that I can hear my typing through the playback of the much, much less adulterated version, my hearing is above par. I totally get that it sounds like a washley tune, too. Even though that's quite a bit lower than I was going for it's still a funny comment.

Kind of funny bad

EDIT: You won't piss me off. I've since stopped dishing out much worse but I'll be fucked if I can't take a good critical thrashing, myself. Thanks for checking out the rest of my stuff too.

Posted by 112268 on Mar-06-2011 22:40:

well im a harsh critic. some might like, those need to get their brain checked lol. Btw do you want my Reason 4 project file for the remix? I dont have time finishing it so you can take it.

btw Raphies version is pretty good actually, good work.

I've already slapped Raphie with the white glove on my version and I need to learn the Reason 5, anyway. I don't need him saying, "Well, you used 112268's version, blah, blah, blah." I never got #4 so there's also a bit of a learning curve I want to hike through and, in spite of my mix, I really like what I've gotten down, so far.

It's not that Reason 5's ultra different, either, and a lot of things are just genius intuitive, like how automation is done, now. I love tweaking with Thor and Kong is just fucking ace. Still scratching the surface with both of those.

Why are you running out of time, anyway?

master degree.

well here it is for anyone interested:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/986ys7

its just a redrum and two subtractors and some efex. it will work in v5 too i guess. whats funny is to bypass and not the master combinator ive put on, lol it makes everything sound wicked.

Nothing there when I tried a download mate?

Ed - I've just come online and seen you had something - but now it's removed so I'm assuming you have taken down for now.

Karl (NEM) and I are altering the main last drop as per label request as they wanted the break gnarling synth as part of the main drop hook, against my wishes!
