Just bumpin by to say I enjoyed these immensely
Smooth flow and mixing Lews and Lilith

Posted by Teezdalien on May-16-2011 23:09:

Really enjoyed both of these sets this month.
Lews' mix flowed nicely. Some great stuff here, RATM were definitely a big influence on myself back in the days where I was playing in a few different rock/alternative bands. I just love how creative Tom Morello is with the axe. Nice progression through the hip-hop/rap stuff into trance and prog. Also dropping some other faves like Stage One, I Have Put Out The Light and Twilo Thunder. Great stuff mate.

Lil, very interesting. I liked how you approached this, dug into some early obscurities that aren't so well known (well to me at least). The only track I recognised here was 99.9 from Koenig Cylinders. I'll always welcome a mix with older tunes I'm not familiar with so thanks for sharing this, proper classic stuff.

Posted by montana on May-18-2011 15:46:

lews. right fucking on. good mix, from the beginning with the rock and hiphop to the mellow section and to your favourite trance cuts and vangelis at the end. nice done mate

Posted by Echo of Silence on May-18-2011 19:49:

Ian, I really like your mix...as I like all of your mixes. It feels like a reeeeeally good "normal" mix though instead of like a classics mix. You and I talked about this, the track selection doesn't "feel" like "your" classics. I think after listening to you for so many years, I would hear more of the tracks that you've played over and over so many times on ourboard radio or ukta radio... again, thanks for putting this together so quickly... obviously motivating me to get Part II of the "TAs share their Classics" going.

Lews, I really like your mix. Thank you so much for sharing your classics. If I put together my own "share my classics" set, I would have included the Vangelis track for sure and probably the Bedrock Mix of Cowgirl; I think maybe I would have picked a different Shpongle track. You know, I have to say, your selection just worked so well from start to finish.

Okay, next I'll listen to the bonus set by Lilith.

Well...
This got off to a bad start when my hard drive melted down on the the computer I usually used to do mixing and media on, so I had to scrounge around and eventually got back to fixing everything up.

Rather than my usual terrorising TA's with industrial and electro I decided to go back to where it all began for me, living out in the proverbial sticks of south west England we would occasionally have the city kids set up a dance party in reserves, parks and basically wherever they could get away with it at least until the rozzers started slapping people around with good behaviour sticks. Tracks would blow in every now and then if the wind was right, of course there was no chance in hell I'd be allowed to go to one!
But on subsequent trips back to England and Europe after I moved to Australia I always made a point of trying to get hold of some of those little gems of electronic music from the early 90s and drag back to this godforsaken, poisonous hellhole of a country where I've lived on and off for close to 20 years when I wasn't travelling or working overseas.

Australia had its own comparatively decent electronic music scene all through the 90s as well, but for this particular mix I chose a lot of English and European artists. That era where people dragged out their music machines and made stuff you could go nuts too, a lot of this is fairly much as underground as electronic music could get and "things" like SP23/Spiraltribe and Curley I doubt we'll see the likes of again.

I put a couple of early trance tracks at the start just so that those of us old enough to remember what trance was like before all the Armins, PVD's, Tiesto's and other subsequent high profile wankers choked it to death. Dont get it in your head for a minute the rest of the set is like those two!

Oh no, the rest of this mix is a rolling barrage of floor smashing, sub-bass destroying old school goa and underground techno full of much abused drum machines, screaming raw 303s that only played in raves and nightclubs that didn't suck. No one else would touch it, no hits on Saturday morning TV or your friendly local top-40 radio went near it because it was listened and danced to by lunatics that took lots and lots... and lots of drugs!

I live vicariously off my memories as I get older and settle into suburban obscurity, it saddens me that EDM has become so commercialised to the point of stagnation, even if there is a second coming for this type of music I doubt I'd have anything to do with it because I'd just look silly at my age and probably on a walking stick.

I really enjoyed this set, Lilith. It is indeed a Bonus. Thanks for all of the effort and hard work to put it together.

Okay, guys, June should be posted within a couple of weeks.

Thanks a lot for listening to it. With a more personal set like this, it's nice to see people enjoyed it as much as I did

Looking forward to the June set!

lol, you were suspended? Wow, you seem like the last person who would be suspended! Why were you suspended?

My sisters and friends liked your set, too, I suspect one or two of them will post up. But maybe not. They seem to be voyeurs.

I'm not terribly keen on getting into why each and every tune on here is here. The explanation for their presence is largely that they've been tunes that have either been long time favorites going back to my childhood, all the way up to tunes and artists I've only found myself absorbed in the last few years.

The reasons are numerous, from my absolute love of Otis Redding's voice, to the fun, good time nature of Parliament, and the outstanding production of an absolute cunt like Kanye West. It's not terribly well mixed, but attempts were made for some degree of continuity - but really, I cared a lot more about the content, as I hope those who listen to it do.

I do want to note the artwork. It's made from a picture of a house I used to play a lot of parties at while in school at UW Stevens Point, and largely represents (along with the tracklist) the profound impact those of you I met in school at Point have had on me.

Anyway, thanks for having me, TA. Appreciated.

Yay!

July 2011 is up!

I'm going to hold the June 2011 spot for Rebel (Hamid).

I think he wanted to fill it so I suspect he ran into unexpected obstacles. I'd really enjoy listening to a set where he shares the tracks that have influenced him through the years so I'll hold his spot.

Moving on, this is July and Rob's set is up. I am downloading as I type.

Thanks Rob, for your contribution!

Sweet. Should be some enjoyable listening this afternoon.

Posted by montana on Jul-04-2011 15:11:

really nice mix rob. one that stays on the mp3player for a long fucking time. good flow and good tunes, just one question though? no tribe called quest, really?

Posted by RJT on Jul-05-2011 17:41:

Thanks guys - I had a blast trying to figure out what I wanted to do with this, and to be honest it was a good way for me to try and put something together that was just a coherent picture of what I liked without worrying about flexing my alleged "DJ chops."

The only problem was that I couldn't fit everything in that I'd have liked - meaning no ATCQ this time. I actually had "Busta's Lament" among the tunes I compiled, but it just didn't wind up in the final mix.

I actually think I'm going to try and pursue this idea a little further, and a little more thoroughly, now - I really wanted to get the set done by the beginning of July, but it also kind of inspired me to try and go a little further with the idea.

Also, I do think I owe Jack an apology. He had asked me to do this a while ago when things were not the greatest for me, and I agreed to do it, and completely flaked out. My excuses are just that, excuses, and I've felt bad about it because I know I should have just declined and allowed someone else to take the torch. I was just glad to have an opportunity to do it again.

Anyway, I'm pleased you guys have enjoyed it. One compliment I always appreciated hearing from most of you all was that my sets sounded like "Rob Turner sets" - I hope this one was somewhat similar, because this is a lot of the music that shaped my taste in electronic music, so while there isn't really any "EDM" per se, I'd hope it kind of gives a glimpse into why I liked the EDM I do.

Thanks again everyone, and thank you Chrissi for having me back. Fond memories of this forum, and I'm glad I got to share something like this with all of you.

Posted by RJT on Jul-05-2011 17:43:

Oh, also, if anyone really enjoyed the Ugly Duckling track, I urge you to check out more of their music. I don't think they get the respect they deserve in the least.

Feel free to PM, email, or Facebook me should you need to be pointed in the right direction.

Great set, Rob. I really enjoyed the funk and the hip hop, but I couldn't listen to the LCD Soundsystem track. Too many not-so-fond memories associated with that one.

I'd have to say Otis Redding made this mix what it was supposed to be.
