cuba has one of the highest literacy rates in the world (i'd bet my left nut it's higher than the US), and free healthcare. this isn't to excuse tyrants or communism of course, but as moongoose said, the embargo certainly hasn't helped the conditions of the average cuban (way to go USA!).
as communist dictatorships go, i think the cubans did it the best, at least from what ive read.

haha, come on man. like that has anything to do with what i was actually saying. obviously i don't think the Healthcare Fairy appears in the middle of night and conjures hospitals and hot slutty nurses out of thin air.
i just think its funny that a poor communist tryranny can provide better services (in terms of bang-for-buck) than the Jewel of the Free World. and they did this while under the Boot of Embargo being worn by the winner of the 20th Century.
credit where credit is due.

But the democracy! Its what people want!
I read this in a BBC article today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-13147271

So why are Qataris not demanding democracy, in the same way as so many others are elsewhere in the Arab world?
The reply I get from a Qatari student is simple enough: "If you have everything you need, who needs democracy?" |
Its not 100% applicable to Cuba, but still, democracy is to governance as what unions are to business.

despite their impoverished-ness they have (mostly) free healthcare and education, something the US is unable or unwilling to do in all its opulence.

free education at the university level I assume you mean? because our regular public school education system is "free" and it's utter garbage.

You know why its garbage.
REPUBLICANS REFUSE TO FUCKING FUND IT TO ANY DECENT LEVEL!
Fucking retard.
Also, we do not have the will to mold students like we should.
I visited my brothers high school in Kitakyushu and they had students there helping clean the school and there was staff on hand doing administrative work. This was also a Saturday.
My father, who is very intimately familiar with the US school system was shocked and said "never in a million years would you see this in the US."

Holy shit I'm going to fucking strangle you. Are you just trolling? Listen carefully you moron, you have NO IDEA what you're talking about. It doesn't matter who is in office, education spending has gone up progressively pretty much every year. Bush jacked up education spending way over Clinton levels, and Obama is spending something like 80% more than Bush was already. What is the real problem? It sure as fucking hell isn't Republicans. Our public education system is absolutely dominated by Democrats, the liberal elite, and is beholden to public sector unions who donate 98% of their campaign contributions to Democrats. The NEA is the country's largest union... of teachers and administrators. Democrat. They go out of their way to stifle private and charter school competition that would actually help the education system improve. Your own Lord Obama Most Merciful killed the D.C. school voucher program that was benefiting inner city kids as a "thank you" to the unions who helped get him elected. You need to check yourself before you spout off stupid shit like this.
Look at the goddamn graphs and tell me the Republicans have ANYTHING to do with not funding education.

Here's your problem:
Posted by Joss Weatherby on Apr-21-2011 09:40:
Who cares what the fed does, its a pittance anyways.
You know how little federal funding actually goes to effect education at the state level? Most of the federal funds barely cover administrative costs at the state and district level.
When I say republicans aren't funding it, I mean joe and sally stupid who don't vote for bonds or taxes that will benefit students, often with the retort "I don't have any kids" or "my kids go to private school, so I won't vote for public school measures."
Save your union rants for some other discussion as well. Both parties have chronyism issues, and the Republicans have some of the most glaring. At least the Democrats tend to be chronys with decent groups of people like teachers, not fat cat wall street execs who serve no real public good.

Either you're lying, or your dad is as big of a fucking idiot as you are. I call bullshit on his "intimate knowledge" of the school system. When I was in high school, guess what was going on every single day after school? Students cleaning up the school grounds, raking pine needles and leaves, washing chalk boards, etc. Even on Saturdays (albeit those were usually the kids taking saturday school who needed extra credit, or were on detention, but still).

Where the fuck did you go to school?
I am not lying, my dad spends most of his time dealing with teachers unions, in fact his day pretty much revolves around it.
Also, if you want to call a US Supreme Court decision winning attorney on limiting first-amendment rights in an educational environment case, which was precedent setting by the way, unfamiliar with the US school system then go ahead.

yeah... teachers are real decent these days. they'll shut down the capital of Wisconsin for weeks and get arrested for making death threats to lawmakers for being asked to pay a mere 12% of their own retirement and health benefits, which is still less than the private sector, while making twice as much as the average. A real caring lot. They've turned into nothing more than a group with average intelligence at best who are looking for the easiest way to get a good paying job; they could give a fuck about the students' needs.
Hey, at least Wall Street execs own companies that employ people... people who pay the bulk of the tax burden. So don't sit there all high and mighty and act like they serve no public good. The leeches who suck off the government teet have that teet thanks to their tax dollars.

No you're right. We should just redistribute money to the unskilled, uneducated, and poor who don't know how to run the businesses that actually fucking hire people.

Yeah.... living in a certain state affects one's IQ. I'm not from the North East even though I was born there? You're a smart one.

You might be physically from the North East, but your ideologically formative years were in Florida.
This is a stupid convo though, its pointless, in 20 years what Cuba today is will only be a grand dream to most of the US. There is nothing we can do to stop it either. We have already reached the overflow point and there is no turning off the spigot. China is sitting down at the table to eat our lunch and Northern Europe is going to decouple and that will be that. The great experiment will end in a failure, in a sad whimper.

My ideologically formative years had everything to do with the people around me, not the fucking state I lived in.
I'm not as pessimistic as you... but if it does end, it will not be a result of the country adhering to the founding principals. James Madison is rolling over in his grave right now, watching an increasingly cancerous tumor of a centralized government sucking the life blood of its host dry. We're devolving into a command and control collectivist economy run by politicians who are addicted to spending, not a free society with a free market where the individual is recognized. That's why we may be fucked.
Not that this matters to you- you support the very things that will destroy us because you're one of the takers, not the makers. We sit here and yell back and forth but when I shut off the computer, I go to work and contribute to society. And you don't. I actually feel sorry for you and people like you- the armchair quarterbacks of the productive world who sit back and judge and scream and steep in their own self loathing, waiting for a chance to troll to feel better about themselves. You're so busy hating on successful people that your chances to make something of yourself are shrinking by the day, and you don't even realize it. You'll come back with some half-witted remark, trying to blow it off and/or sound clever... but we both know you're going to go to sleep and think about what an utter sad failure of a human being you are. So sad man. I rarely pity people, but you're one of them for sure.

Bahahha
What kind of economy is China Kevin?
The reason the US is going to fail is not an issue of control, its an issue of society, and you are part of the bad part. What is this society made of? It is made of the very strong willed and the weak and persecuted who left Europe. Right now the that mixture is finally coming to a head. The strong are eating the weak and they do not understand that they sit on the back of the weak.
How do the rich get rich in this country? The weak consume their products. How will they have any consumers when they bankrupt this society?
