I agree. I just wonder how much of it really comes down to greed...

Surely their is good money to be made booking respected artits who genuinely are trying new things and to advance the electronic scene...

Granted, it might not be for the "kids", who are more concerend with Guetta, Deadmau5, and Skillrex(sp?), than they ever will be for Hawtin, Mills, & Klock....

but...

shouldn't it always be about the music? Isn't that why we all got into this is in the first place? Is it nieve to think that its wrong to actively NOT book people like this? Especially if a venue is supposed to be the world class establishment they like to claim to be?

When I think of the best clubs, I think of Berghain, DC-10, Fabric, Robert-Johnson, Rex Club.........all seem to do pretty well financially.

These places don't book commercial mainstream artists. They book forwarding thinking artists who are actively putting out music that seeks to forward the electronic movement as a whole. Artists like Toronto's very own James Teej or Art Department. Who, coincidently enough, have yet to headline at the top club in their own city. Seems a bit odd, no?

To be fair the clubs/cities you mention have people from other countries visit regularly (from what I've seen) and make $ regardless.

I agree w what you're fundamentally saying though. I mean you think Guv never made any money with previous headliners that you guys mentioned that were non cheese? I say just get a decent balance that way you'll get the best of both. Maybe even get those that like the cheesier side of music to listen to better music.

The only one that really has a much larger population is London...

Berlin: 3.4 Million
Ibiza: 670K (obviously much higher during the season)
Paris: 2.2 Million
Frankfurt: 670K
London: 7.5 Million
Toronto (GTA): 5.5 Million

Definitely true. But you have to keep in mind these places aren't the only game in town, like guvernment is here. Look at Berlin/London/Ibiza. On any given night you have tons of options to choose from, all with big names to boot (and if your in Berlin, your most likely never paying more than 15Euro cover.....ever).

But yeah I completely agree with both of you guys. 10,000+ capacity in Toronto needs to have cheese or profits won't be maximized. Hell, fill every allaccess party with cheese.

Just toss us some decent bookings here and there on a regular Saturday. Some new bookings, not the same one-offs from 2005.

Example: Guv loves to book people they have a history with, people who were big 6-7 ago and are still respected today, but haven't done anything new or relevant in years. Until this changes or some actual competition moves into town that challenges this laxidasical philosophy, the overall scene will remain stagnant. And that's a shame.

/rant - sorry guys, let this be about Labour again.

I heard day 2 is going to close with Tiesto fucking a live rhino on stage to Lethal Industry while Johann Gielen jumps up and down on Tiesto's back on a pogo stick wearing a pedobear suit.
