It's not awful. It just isn't for everyone. But I'd like to think people pursing a career in nursing are aware of the hours when they join up.

Plus, night shifts can be great. My last placement had two teams on nights. The first night one team would take a 3 hour nap from midnight-three, then the next would take theirs from three-six. Then the next night we'd switch.

It's different at my current job though - I'm the only one here at night, aside from one housekeeping staff. However, this job is easy and only 8 hour shifts. I can usually make it through without having to take a nap, although my boss has given me permission to do so if I have to.

The other awesome thing about shift work is that with 5 days in a row off all the time, it's very easy to take several small trips/vacations throughout the year.

My one gf doesn't have any schedule really - as long as she works the required number of hours per pay period, she can pretty much work whatever hours she wants/have whatever time she wants off.

That sounds abyssmal.

But then again, I've never been one for naps. I did swing shift forever and, well, it pretty much made slylee leave TA, huh?

Are you a nurse in the actual metro area of Toronto? I know it must be crazy in Rochester because the ER is always crazy with 3 or 4 colleges in the area, as well as numerous ghettos. I had surgery on my arm at Strong Hospital, and all the nurses there seemed great, but I would imagine the ER nurses would be kind of jaded from dealing with stupid drunk kids and/or gunshot victims to actually be like normal people.

I don't really like naps either. But the coffee here tastes like Victory Coffee and makes me feel like shit, so nap it is.

I'd end up finally falling asleep after laying there for two hours and forty-five minutes. And then everyone would pay. Yes, they'd ALL pay!

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jul-23-2011 05:46:

Lol. You have to admit it's pretty sweet getting paid 30 some odd dollars to sleep for a quarter of the shift.

Posted by Lews on Jul-23-2011 05:47:

I love sleeping and getting paid for it. One of the best types of being paid there is

One of my best skills at my job is checking out rooms to make sure everything's correct in them. Ive got to check right behind the door, often.

So will just close a nice little door for a bit and lay down in front of it to block it and fall asleep for a while

Oh that's right. I recall IGK saying you got promoted to concierge.

Well IGK's been suspended. Fuck him.

I accidentally ran an unstoppable virus scan on a linux email server at work once email was down for 45 minutes. I almost got fired.

I worked at a Wal-Mart once, many years ago. For 1 week. I trained to help open this flagship store of theirs, and on opening day, I couldn't find a single fucking parking spot. So I just never came back.
