well shit, i go to bed, come back in the morning and 3 pages have sprung out of this!

i happen to be chinese, and usually i dont get fussy about racial slurs, but why would u censor out the african slur and leave the chinese/asian slur there?

i didnt yo.. tranceaddict automatically did. i hope you dont think i was personally trying to offend peopl ethat are chinese.... because my whole point of the post was that i dont use those words, ever. i was trying to make a point.

id continue on but it looks like proxi and others are doing a damn good job without me having to step in again.

word to cortexbomb, who just said exactly what ive been trying to say since response 1 (tho he said it a little nicer )

quote:
I can understand the fact that a lot of people have grown up with gay being used, and that breaking out of the habit doesn't seem like it's worth the effort, but I still don't agree with it. The usage, like any other deragatory slang, *does* show disrespect whether you intend it to or not; and by continuing to use it you *will* appear to be something that I don't think a lot of you are, ignorant.

Well, in a way, it IS pathetic. you see, having a phobia means you have an irrational fear of smth. And irrational means you don't have a legitimate reason to fear it. Therefore still fearing it, after you've been told there's nothing to be afraid of, is pathetic
How mean is that huh

See, I'm slightly afraid of flying. Aerophobia is actually a rational fear, as flying isn't rational for a human being. However, flying in an aircraft is perfectly safe, so, if I still have Aerophobia after I've been explained how incredibly safe flying is, I develop a phobia. An irrational fear of flying.

Anyhow, the word pathetic can be interpreted in several ways I believe.
Pathetic can mean you feel sorry for that person.
Pathetic can also mean you think that person IS a sorry-ass

As for homophobes, to me the second option counts. How irrational can a fear be!! You see, the classic homophobe is a person that is actually a homo him/her self , but (due to various reasons) is too afraid to admit it! Why would you be afraid of revealing your true identity!
Secondly, no gay person will just jump on you and rape you, so that's where the fear is irrational too! See, being a homo isn't contageous! Speaking of which..it isn't even a disease! It's who you are!

But still..if you want to be afraid of people that are differently...suit yourself. Just, for the sake of human intelligence and respect, keep it to yourself

i am NOT taking sides here.....but i was reading through this thread...and what Miss P said above is brilliant....i never thought of phobias in that way....VERY WELL said...if we had karma u would get ++++++KK........anyway i will leave u guys to argue..

CortexBomb>>Some nice points there, it's nice to know I'm not alone.

more to say on the matter eh i think there is about a 0.001% gay population on here mate, coupled with tonnes of people from over the ocean the word gay get used loads as on offensive term. i just feel sorry for anyone else who actually is gay, i mean, its like me going on the GC boards, everyone slates dumonde

Just my 2 cents on the matter...

While I can't say from personal experience, it would seem logical to me that they woudnt need to feign indifference. In todays world, were you can still get beat up, or moked for being gay, coming out of the closet so to speak seems to suggest that they don't need to conform to others. Additionally my gay freinds happened to come over right as I was typing my last post in this thread last night so we discussed it a bit. From what I understand the general consensus is that because people don't refer to them as gay(at least in a derogatory manner), it doesn't bother them or most other homosexuals, as it simply doesn't refer to homosexuals most of the time. If you asked 99% of the people who use gay as a derogatory term they'll say that they have nothing against homosexuals, and it's a slang term for stupid or something similar.

and ill again bring up this point that cortex made:

than again if you think about it gay used to mean happy, last decade if you called sum gay they would think u mean homosexual, now if sum1 called u gay they would mean a derogatory remark but you wouldnt take as them saying that your homosexual. im not condoning that sort of behaviour, far from it, i have a mate whose gay so i suppose i havnt been able to get in bad habits with using the word incorrectly. just putting a point across so you may possibley see it froma different angle thats all

Posted by sothis on Aug-20-2002 17:34:

oh i totally understand what you are saying... lots of words have had meanings in the past, which then changed. this isnt supposed to be a similar word on purpose, but its the one good example i can think of.. thats the word ******. in the past, it was used to describe a bundle of sticks, since thats the definition... now yea, its way more derogatory of a word than "gay", but you dont really see a lot of people saying "well it used to mean something else so its fine that i use it"...

just playing devils advocate here

Posted by JMF [TrAcId] on Aug-20-2002 17:35:

Things seem to be going around in circles now.
quote:

This is my point, the term is being used as a slang word to mock something, the more it gets used the more people are going to Link the word to something lame. this sort of thing should be curbed.

exactly, thats why i was saying the word gay is getting used more and more as sumthing else, like it was before. i wasnt saying you could use it as an excuse

Re: not very happy

[. This being the way that some Message Board members use the term 'gay' as an insult. I don't know what it's like in America or Canada, but here in the UK it's not done - it's almost Homophobia.

Well of course it's not done here in the UK cos we live in a socitey run by the left. If you so much as look at a queer here wrong then the Policitly correct Human Rights groups Gays and lsbians groups And leftist groups would call you nazi homophobic and all the usaul.
In genral I don't mind gays as long as they keep what they do to them selves. I don't agree with them kissing and holding hands in public and all the rest. Any way I'am going off the point here but I don't think gays would have as much of a problem if they didn't try and force them selves on us with all thier rights and that crap.

Your Views are retarted, and you have just shown yourself up to be some sort of backwards thinking ape.
And you'll find that most of 'us' don't go around forcing our opinion and fighting for rights. Why should we have to, we are Human after all, your thinking belongs in the 19th Century. Time to grow up I think.

Posted by sothis on Aug-20-2002 18:04:

i was just going to verbally tear apart jason r's response but i think he makes an ass out of himself easily without anyone having to even say anything.

*points and laughs at the homophobe*

actually no.

retard (r-trd)
v. retarded, retarding, retards
v. tr.
To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede.

v. intr.
To be delayed.

n.
A slowing down or hindering of progress; a delay.
Music. A slackening of tempo.

I think his views on sexuality lack progress and are dated, ie - Retarded. I have the full command of the English Language, being English.
