really there are microcosmic scenes all over the place and coolness is based on geography

for our gang it's all about live sets or a mix of bands and DJs. but what makes it cool is much more than the music, it's about the environment and crowd just as much (obviously that's true everywhere)

for youtubers and forum people, dubstep/2-step/future bass is obviously where it's at - most of the best stuff is in this camp right now. gotta be a pretty clever DJ to keep the crowd rocking with that sound though.

@nefardec: mostly like those tracks. hadn't heard much of that. I'd say a lot of the witchy/punky "house" is basically no-wave

Gotta agree with System-J, love drum & bass especially the liquid style. Also I feel that its the only genre that doesn't take itself too seriously and has not been bastardized.

When did the liquid d'n'b actually peak anyways? I didn't realize people still produced it. The LM1 - Redshift album is the fucking shit.

Lm1 doesn't make liquid, he makes atmospheric. Liquid would be High Contrast, Hospitality Records, Lenzman, Bachelors Of Science, etc.

Drum 'n bass is where everything is at. It has major mainstream players like Pendulum, Chase & Status, Sub Focus, so all the 18 year old kids are listening to it. In the minimal/Autonomic movement it's got the newest breakout sound in dance music, so it scores all the cool points there. It's got incredible variety, from hard and aggressive neurofunk to soulful liquid funk to spacey atmospheric to the experimental line-blurring sounds of guys like ASC, Sabre and Antibreak. It's grown past the militant '90s image - girls love it again, so you can't play the "It's just male geek music" card against it. It's even coming out with great artist albums - my favourite albums of 2011 and 2010 were drum 'n bass, so it's artistically accomplished on all fronts.

And the best part is that you can instantly tell who's an out-of-date, clueless dickhead with no finger on the pulse because they won't have any idea what's happening in the scene and will start muttering about amen breaks. Drum 'n bass is so cool you don't even know it's cool yet.

i don't think it will be cooler in a larger way simply because of the tempo. i believe the klf would have something to say about this.

Nice, just because Pendulum is mainstream it means they're bad. C'mon these guys have nice tracks and i think they are pretty creative too, i prefer listen Liquid tho

Yeah I'm totally lost when it comes to genres.

Now it's only a matter of time before Jay-Z comes out of retirement again and raps over a drum&bass track and people think he's so innovative.

I'm surprise no one has tapped into it to fast-track their career; especially the black community being the majority that started Jungle.

system-j, thanks for the heads up on dnb. could've done without the speculative bickering though. id like to see girls dancing to 2011 dnb, wheres the youtube of that? At future sound of breaks and world of dnb in miami a couple years ago all i saw was 90's militant vibe still, with dudes wearing camouflage hoodies and candy raver girls. so its changed drastically in a few short years?

i agree with meriter, there always seemed to be internet dance music, and actual club dance music.

No idea why nobody has mentioned Techno yet. You obviously gotta listen to STROBOSCOPIC ARTEFACTS all day long until you get the complex geometrical structures no mortal listener would understand.
