I think the dog would love a chance to get spaghetti-o's all over itself if it could. I know Lily would want to roll in it lol

I would say that in most cases it's against their self-interest to have children. However, it's not for me to say whether they ought to pursue their own self-interest in this matter.

Obviously, society as a whole has an interest in maintaining some level of re-population from generation-to-generation, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Currently, individual incentives would seem to frustrate this interest. It may be worth considering how these incentives could be altered, but it's not something I've given much thought to. I seems relatively easy to subsidize parenthood quantitatively, but once you get into the qualitative side of things you have to negotiate thorny issues of eugenics and so forth. I imagine we could come up with something more effective than mass suicide, in any event.

Think about it:

Children are like clients, they want all of you all the time.

Then they are like robbers: "GIMME YO MONEY BITCH!" then they disappear.

Fuck that, I had a job so that I didn't have to jack all my parent's money.

Posted by Banora on Nov-09-2011 17:08:

I tried so hard to get a job as a teenager. Fuck. Everywhere was "you need experience to get hired!" Fuck you how do I get experience if you don't hire me *stabs that person with a pen*

Posted by ziptnf on Nov-09-2011 17:10:

My first job was working in a concession stand. I was 14 and was paid 5 bucks an hour. When I was 16 I got a job as a lifeguard and got a 2 dollar raise. Easy peasy.

I have/had my life guard certification in Denmark. Oddly the pool I applied to wouldn't accept it so I asked them if people drowned differently in the US than in Denmark. The manager didn't answer but still didn't hire me.

I was a terror child because of ADD, not parenting.

Well you probably could have taken a short course and/or recertified by taking the test downtown at the Pool management center on Jefferson street or whatever and gotten the job.

Yeah, this is a widespread problem that isn't quite so easy to fix without zombie drugs. If your kid has ADD that would suck.

Did your parents make you take that shitty Ritalin?

No one made me take anything. And don't knock something that works wonders for a lot of people just because others misuse it.

I ask because I had to take it due to my mother claiming I was 'wild and out of control' (I'm like 7-11 at the time). I was on 3 doses of 15mg a day. I hated the shit, my dad hated that I took it too, he said it turned me into a zombie.

I remember I once when to the doctor with her for a check up and she said I needed a higher dose because I am still 'wild'. I begged the doctor to take me off, because I hated how it made me feel. When I wouldn't shut up he sent me out of the office and mom got her wish: dose for 4 15mg pills a day.

Sorry if I knock it a bit.

I don't blame you. Diagnosing the correct medication (if that is even the appropriate treatment for a given person) is trial & error. Most people go through a couple meds before they find the right one, if they ever do at all. Other common Rx's include Adderall and Dexedrine, and even then you have to find out if immediate release or sustained release works better. There is no single appropriate med for everyone. It can be a difficult trial finding the right one, but the individual then has to ask him/herself which is worse, that trial period, or dealing with the untreated ADD.

Acting out is hardly a reason for parents to jump to meds, though, and any doctor who prescribes based on that alone is a quack.

Posted by Banora on Nov-09-2011 19:38:

Yeah, I guess my question was pretty harsh. It really can be beneficial when used correctly.

I am curious, did you take medicine for your ADD or did you chose another route?
