I am going to the Full Moon party with my friends regardless, for the experience, so I know I am more interested in what are the best places to stay and WHY. (aside from Koh Phangnan)

See you tonight babes!

Update: I just booked last night for 6 days on Sunrise Beach!

*Calling Nat!!* Get on it, girl!

Ironically, I have learned that some of my (non-club) friends have attended this party and they were completely excited and full of positive reviews! Not a single bad review amongst them! They each have different stories, but the general consensus is that its just a massive beach party, and feels a little like spring break in a far away country.

Few notes: I did happen to book for the biggest time of year: Christmas and New Years. I was told by a friend to book now if I wanted anything in close proximity, and boy was she correct! Wow. So many places sold out already!!! If anyone is considering going at that time of year, please consider at LEAST booking that part of your trip now.

It is VERY hard to find any places that will let you stay for anything under 5 days during this one particular period (as a matter of fact, it was hard to find anything for under 7-10 days!) Upon my research, most Full Moon parties during the rest of the year are a little more flexible (3 days minumum) but during the Christmas-New years period, there are two Full Moon Parties (25th and 28th) as well as the New Years Eve massive, the biggest party of the year. Because of this, the hotels ask for more money and longer stay-commitments (still very cheap, IMO). We definitely had to adjust our trip plans around the Full Moon Party requirements, so I would make the suggestion to people: if you are going several places in Thailand (as most people do!), maybe look into the dates and requirements of the FMP first, then build the rest of your trip to Thailand around it.

There are also options outside of Haad Rin, but I was told by a few not to bother, as there are taxi issues (and scams!) particularly during this week of the year. If you dont mind the long waits for rides, less convenience, and less access and amenities, the pros of staying up the coast seem to be the peacefulness, the low-key beach bungalows, and far less crowded beaches.

We just decided to stay right on the party beach. We will now be taking a 21 day trip to Thailand, seeing many places, and even booking 4 days in a super high-end spa resort in Krabi, so we decided that after all the peacefulness, we kinda want to be right smack in the action to round out the trip.

One question for anyone who has gone: considering we will be leaving right after the biggest night of the year (Jan 2nd), how much time would you allow to leave the hotel, get to the pier, and take the ferry back to Koh Samui to catch our flight to Bangkok? our flight is at noon back to Bangkok and it is ESSENTIAL that we do not miss this, as our flight back to New York is only a couple hours later. I have heard nightmare reports about masses of people leaving the island all at once, huge lines, and even sinking ferries from overcrowding, eek! Are there private boats to take to Koh Samui should the ferry schedule not work with our needs? Thanks!

Super sweet!
At the NY Times Travel Show, a speaker said that Thailand is a great entry point for people who haven't been to Asia.
Should be a great time!

I wish I knew or remembered more to be able to answer your question about getting to the Koh Samui airport to get back home. It does seem like a tight schedule.
If you're leaving on Jan 2, it seems you have a day to recover, and you won't be on the same boat as the people who came in just for the night of the party.
You probably will need to check the ferry schedule - I see this, but I'm sure whether it's up to date or has everything:

I think the ones to/from Haad Rin are what you want. Thong Sala has a bigger pier but is farther away.
I see something about a Samui-Phangan Express, but I didn't find much info in my quick search.

Also allow some time to go from the Koh Samui pier to the airport. From the Big Buddha pier (the closest to the airport), I believe it is 30-45 minutes - waiting for available vans and people to fill them up probably takes longer than the ride itself. Taxis are more expensive but might be a quicker option.

Are you going to be able to catch the Full Moon parties on 12/25, 12/28, and 12/31?
I was going to post some tips but saw that I already sent them to you on fb earlier.

We will be able to catch the Full moon party on the 28th and the New Years Eve Party Will just miss the Christmas party, but we will be in Phuket enjoying our resorts party there, and Bangla Road, so I think we will be ok!

Thanks for your help, Dan! Still arranging everything, but its finally starting to come together.

***Side note***I am SO glad I started looking into stuff right after I got my days off confirmed. Holy camoly!!! Who knew one would have to book in such advance??? Hotels and flights during those weeks are being booked up left and right! I had no idea it was such a popular time until I *really* started looking into this stuff. Literally half the hotels I have looked at are already sold out.

I would go when the weather is nicer. There's a part of the year when the weather is humid with non stop Thundershowers.

Fortunately, I looked that up far in advance and have picked the driest part of the year!
