The thing is finally out! They've uploaded some great teasers on their yt channel.

Initial thoughts after an hour of playing around...

THE BAD

I've crashed the audio engine a few times already. Stability is not great.

CPU usage is 10-15% higher than Ableton.

Memory usage is more than double Ableton.

Lots of (important) buttons are way too small.

It looks like everything is written in Java ( ), except for the realtime bits that live in a separate process. Subsequently...

- It will always use a fuck load of RAM (I'm getting about half a gig on idle).
- The UI will always be kind of sluggish (all Java UI frameworks are very heavy).
- Retina support will probably never happen.

My guess is memory consumption and UI speed will probably improve if they start developing against Oracle Java on Mac instead of the shitty Apple version, which is actually no longer actively maintained!

THE GOOD

Containers are fucking amazeballs. I've only used the M/S container so far, but that blew my mindgrapes; I've bought a lot of plugins purely for M/S support and this made them redundant.

Mixing mode is awesome. A nice change from the terrible metering in Ableton.

Split clip/arrange view is even more awesome than expected.

Lot's of really innovative ideas, but I don't think I'll be switching to it.

Just glancing over the comments at KVR, Bitwig seems like a big 'ol crashfest for a lot of people. How the hell can a DAW that has taken this long to come to market and go through such a lengthy beta process be so unstable?

Posted by meriter on Mar-26-2014 21:18:

i'm already sold but it's gonna be a couple years till I dive in, and it'll be on a linux machine

It must be a fucking mare to get a DAW stable on the zillion different configurations out there

FYI - Bitwig Studio is on sale for $299/259 through January 15.

If i was starting again id probably go with Bitwig but ive invested too much money in Live at this stage

Just tried the demo and I'm sold. The arrange window feels intuitive and deep. The color palette on the right is very easy to sort instead of right clicking or menu dragging like in logic. The whole process of making a track feels fun, reminds of the sequencer in that old playstation 1 game where you can make dance music, the memories. Its absolutely stable for me and I'm on mac so memory usage is not a problem. My 02.

Before I didn't take this company and daw seriously so totally ignored the thread, my regrets.

Ok Paulino, make us dream now with some crazy trance banger.

What are your thoughts on it? Like it?

Posted by TranceElevation on Feb-10-2015 13:58:

It's a great daw. Everything you need is on the main window. However I missed some native Cubase plugins that are essential to my workflow, so I didn't switch.

Posted by Innocence Lost on Feb-10-2015 14:03:

I just bought a copy on kVr for 200$

Just finished a ~30 track (including effects tracks, Bitwig doesn't call them buses ) project in Bitwig just fine. Know some people that have done ~50 track dance projects with no performance issues either.

After a few months of my switch to Bitwig, here is what I like:

1. Automapping of VST parameters to your controller via Preset Macros. You don't need Komplete Kontrol or Akai's new equivalent, its built right into your DAW.
2. Plugin Sandboxing. Seriously, the fact that one plugin crashing doesn't fuck your day up is just awesome.
3. The way multi-out VST is handled in 1.1 is extremely intuitive and stays out of the way.
4. Containers, containers, containers. Being able to do complex modulations, VST layers, chaining, stacking, etc all inside of various container types is simply amazing for sound design. You basically have a modular system at your disposal with your VSTs which can be saved into auto controller mapping presets.
5. Cross platform support that doesn't skip a beat sending projects back and forth.
6. Controller scripting system allowing you to do all kinds of powerful stuff / custom behavior if you know Javascript.

Everything I don't like is being fixed in 1.2. We are getting high DPI / Retina support and track grouping among other things!

Finally got my license approved thru the website. Now how do i get 8 channels of omnisphere like i did in logic. I checked the website and even downloaded the template but its still one channel and instance. I see 8 levels but only 1 midi editor window that only works level 1, i'm confused.

Juan it should be in the manual which is really good BTW. Basically you make an instrument track and instead of sending it to master send it to your multi-out VST and select the midi channel that appears right by the selection dropdown.

All multi-out VST's have a button on them that lets you add all of their outputs to child tracks that show when you expand the VST in the mixer display.

King

Long Live BITWIG, King of all Daws! Hahaha

Posted by cryophonik on Mar-26-2015 18:25:

In case you guys haven't seen this, Bitwig and U-he have teamed up for a promotion - buy Bitwig and get either ACE or Bazille for free; existing Bitwig users get a $50 U-he voucher.

Hmmmm...I might have to buy that Dark Zebra now (and get Zebra3 for free when it's released).

I actually thought it was the other way around and hoping to get a coupon for U-he hive, but instead its for the daw.

The developers are cross-promoting. Log into your Bitwig account and there will be a coupon code for the U-he store. Your U-he account will only have the coupon code to buy Bitwig at $50 off.

Aww, cryo, you're a life saver.

Thanks.

Hive for $49 is a steal - that's what I paid when U-he gave out the last $50 voucher to its customers. Best $49 I've spent on software in a loooooong time.
