Humanities are useless to those who are uninterested in them.

Admit it, Lira. The humanities as a whole are a pyramid scheme. People study something lame, often pay their PhD themselves, and in the end the one thing they can do with it is stay in university and teach the very same thing to younger students.

Not at all. Firstly, the government pays me to study (I still can't understand why in the US it's the other way around), and the knowledge produced often contributes to areas outside the humanities. For example, Chomsky's formal grammar made several contributions to computer science - so much so that a friend of mine, a computer engineer, said he had one discipline in which he had to read Noam's books, so it's not just an indirect contribution.

As for the person who inspired Chomsky, he was a philosopher whose contributions in the human sciences I'm sure I don't need to enumerate (Descartes).

Not really, you're always quitting before you even start studying them... so it's possible to quit your studies in all catalogued languaged during your lifetime

(Jokes aside, study all the languages! )

Posted by Vector A on Apr-30-2012 01:30:

Hey, I haven't quit just yet.

Posted by Lira on Apr-30-2012 01:40:

And don't you dare quitting!

Err, you do know that I'm saying stuff like that to provoke you and don't mean it, right? I'm asking cause you feel the ridiculous need to correct every single silly claim I make.

That being said, for every single linguist who has actually contributed to a useful field there's surely a dozen who spend their life teaching it. Same for other humanities. So my claim that they are a pyramid scheme still stands.

Oh for god's sake, Lira. Please stop trolling me by always taking the opposite opinion, no matter how stupid and ridiculous it is. It's getting childish, really.

Actually, I'm about to post a thread about your sly tactics... you almost got me killed the day before yesterday

Now that's something I must agree with
