-- how come so few people understand trance?!

I joined a frat at Iowa State and most of the people listen to hiphop. I can stand it, well... I kinda like the beats. I brought my tables with me and I've invited some of my friends over. I was spinning:

Rhythm Gangster - The Crowd Song
Rank 1 - Awakening (Original)
Driftwood - Freeloader
Ascension - Someone (Thrillseekers Remix)

They were nodding and moving their foot to the beat. When I finished they said, "I didn't know you played this type of music. You have to make me a CD! I like it."

So it is my understanding that they didn't know what I meant when I said that I spin trance and progressive. Note: It will be a few more weeks before I try out progressive on these people.

Ah so in a few weeks I have a house party to DJ.

But I have tried a lot( explaining TRANCE to my friends)....now I have given up....it's their loss and I'm happy feeling all those great unique feelings....even without themmmmmm

I don't get it:
I respect most people music choice, I even like some of their songs. I'm open to all new sorts of music, but nobody seems to be open for trance. They think all electronic music is like hardcore.

I once was listening to a trance song when a friend of me entered, he askes what song i was listening to because hge liked it a lot!!
and it was trance...

So if people would be more open to trance, they would even like it.

i think its never easy if you listen to music and most of your friends dont like it...i dont want them to force to listen to it or to like it but i also want them to respect what i am listening to!
its a pity that in most clubs i go to commercial techno is played...thers too much bass in it,mostly freaks on the dancefloor...I want a club where you can sit down on the dancefloor,close your eyes...listen to the music...feeling the music...getting cold and dreaming of a better world...thats the only drug you need...music...only pure trance...awesome music...too sad there are too less of those clubs ...
but obviously as you can see it here in this thread people from all over the world come togehter to talk about the same topic: their favourite music...if THAT is not somthing to appreciate...what then?

i don't understand how people can bash other music genres but claim the one they listen to is better. This topic has been discussed more than enough times with the same replies and tones. No music genre is better than another. It's all opinion and you have to respect everyone's opinion.

Trance isn't the best music genre, btw.

WTF!!, Trance has feeling, Trance gives out a message of inspiration.

Rappers with their RnB crap only use that image to the extent of thinking of it as power, all i hear about RnB is "It gives me power"..

I laugh, Techno music gives me power and i know it gives power to many other people...

I was listening to Armin Van Buuren - Yet Another Day (Original Mix) and this song was so fantastic, many people here know i'm a hard trance freak , but this tune actually brought a tear to my eye when the bloke sings "Why...why are you laughing", i was blown away.

Trance is quality, RnB is for stupid people...

My opinion only.

YOu bothe are right...i listen to many kinds of music...the only music i DONT listen to is charts! i have many different styles in my cd-rack...cypress hill...bob marley...enya...linkin park...music is my life...when im in clubs i listen to techno..when im on parties i listen to all else...you cannot listen your whole life to one kind of music, idont think so...there is no BEST kind of music...i love it to listen to trance,its my favourite but not the only kind of music i listen to!
anyone who calls me a traitor or a fake is a loser for me!

hip-hop beats & even rap is ok/the music sucks IMO though... see Enigma & Delerium for examples of hip-hop beats with more interesting music... and eurodance for rap with interesting music

I ask myself this question all the time... and something I feel strongly about... as can be seen by this lengthy post. Many people are confused by the word "trance" and create their own (often unfavorable) impression when the word is used to describe music. I play in a dance club on the East Coast in the US. I'm one of the few dance club DJs in the area that lean towards a trance set. I've found that most people (who would otherwise be "uneducated" about trance) respond and really enjoy the sound. Many times I've been told that they've never even heard many of my songs before... which confirms what many have already mentioned in earlier postings.

Some things I've noticed...

The best reactions to trance (arms in the air, etc.) happen later in the set, usually building from more house/commercial. People are looser and allow themselves to get lost in the music.

Unless it's a huge mega-event, dance floor crowds do NOT like long breaks/dropouts/bridges in songs. Even when it makes a nice interlude that kicks in with something even harder, many people don't know how to handle it and figure it's time to leave the dance floor and get a drink. Outside of the club everyone loves DB Boulevard's Point of View (Lange Mix) but when I play it in the club, the many dropouts confuse the dance floor. Too many wonderful songs are awkward to play for dancing.

Also, people like the occasional vocal. Solid Session's Janeiro (AVB mix) is a good example.

I hate to bring this up, but the crowds' overall vitamin of choice makes a difference... E & K are trance friendly... speed/crystal are not. Personally, I prefer it when someone enjoys my music without anything mind-altering... then I know for sure it's good!

All in all... in the US, unless you're a superstar DJ playing at a major club in NYC or similar... your crowd will probably need to be handheld into the world of trance.

Just my three cents worth...
